Page 1 of a Blog...What Should It Be?

I've got my wp theme installed and I'm ready to start posting. I'm going to do the blog in pages not posts.

I'm not sure what to put on the "home" page of the blog----do I start with an article that links to other pages on the site. Or should I start with an article that hops to the product I'm promoting.

Also, I'm trying to figure out the whole "categories" thing. I can't seem to get it to add more than one category.

Any help would be appreciated!

Google likes it when that front page changes with new content. Maybe you shouldn't have a static page on the home page.

Your other categories generally won't show until they have content added to them. You can see them in the admin, but not on the actual blog until there is at least one article posted to the category.

I believe that you should keep your home page for the blog posts, but use your other pages for product content. Then link your posts to your product pages. Use tags and categories to make it easier to find the content they want.

    Hope that helps.

    That does help, Thanks Marcus!

I read somewhere if your blog isn't going to have much content-say articles or so, that you should do the blog in pages not posts.

In that case, would the same thing apply?

If you are not going to add content consistently, then using pages would be fine. My recommendation was to maximize the fact Google likes Wordpress because the front page content changes with each post. But if you are not posting often, it won't matter to Google anyway. Sounds like you are using WP as a website CMS platform, which is a good idea if you are new at web stuff.

Not such a good idea. Pages don't have RSS and RSS is one of the things that you can use to your advantage in a blog.

I would recommend that you follow Marcus' advice and leave the front page to display the most recent posts. As he said the search engines love it. You can still use pages to host the offers you want to display.

Then when you write an article that pertains to an offer you have, create a link to that page of your blog. This way you have your pages, but you also get a larger number of your own posts linking to your offers. More posts on your site means more chances for someone to find your site and then click the link to see the offer you have.
