Is $4.95 cheap for a .com?

I am a 1&1 member and can get my .com's for $4.95 through them at the moment. Is that about the cheapest?

Wherever I buy, I always transfer to BlueHost anyway. Is anyone else offering a better deal at the moment on .com's?

    $4.95 is good, what concerns me is "How much" are they charging you next year for renewal?

    1&1 has had some 'negative' feedback for running .99 .com domains, then charging some astronomical price for renewals that are 3x -5x higher than the norm. Don't quote me on this, just what I've read in similar threads.

    However, I would bet the majority here will tell you to go with NameCheap or GoDaddy, and HostGator or BlueHost for hosting. *Never keep your domain purchases through your hosting platform, as you'll be begging for trouble if ever a problem arises on one of your sites... be it a real complaint or edgewise.

    I buy through GoDaddy, .coms are around $7 per year/every year for me as a discount domain member. I opted-in for their Domain Discount Club for $89 per year, because I buy a lot of domains, over 200 now in 7 months.

    $4.95 is below cost, they are losing money on it. Registrars still have to pay for domains, .com's are in the mid $7's. Resellers are paying even more.

    So anyone that is selling domains for less than $9 or $10, you have to ask yourself why? They are going to be trying really hard to make up that money somewhere else or they are not going to be staying in business very long. Many web hosts do use low cost domains as a loss leader, then they make up for it in hosting fees or via high renewal costs.

    $4.95 is pretty good, but I'd rather just get all mine and my renewals at GoDaddy for under $10. Easier to manage. I just always use the promo codes at:

    I used to pay between $10 - $8.5 on name.com

    now godaddy offer sounds good i guess will give it try next time i buy a domain. Thanks LukePeerFly

    $4.95 is cheap, although they were selling them a few weeks ago at $0.99.

    Maybe 1 & 1 used to be different, but they only charged me $9.99 for a renewal on a $4.95 domain I got last year. That's still less than GoDaddy I believe. I did hear that they're aggressive about collecting fees if you have an auto-renew domain and the payment doesn't process correctly. Just turn auto-renew off if you're concerned.

    anything under $8 is great but it's the registrar that concerns me and 1and1 has had lots of complaints about them so even if its cheap at $4.95 I'd rather pay more with a more trusted registrar.

    I've started buying more and more of my domains at GoDaddy...if you can navigate all the "special offers" after placing the initial domain purchase, I like the overall service.
    1 and1's $4.95 is cheap, but I'm betting they make it somehow in lousy service, etc.

    My advice is to rely on a service that is well known for it's profesionalism like name.com or godaddy. That way you know for sure they won't have hidden costs or very high renewal prices. Personally, I'd rather know where I stand.

    It's cheap alright, but I have countless first and second-hand horror stories of 1&1 from my time as a web-host.

    Things might've changed a bit - and some say they have - but I'm still not prepared to risk it, myself.

    On that basis, I would much rather spend a few dollars extra and go with NameCheap - who are still very cheap anyway! - safe in the knowledge that there are no hidden charges or restrictions, no wacky outdated procedures, or anything else untoward.

    Just my tuppence.

    I am using several, and Godaddy is not my favorite at all. Even with the coupons and all if you purchase Whois Privacy you are paying a lot with them.
    By domainsite.com that I have been using for 7 years now you can buy the domains for $9.99 and the Whois Privacy for $0.50. With GoDaddy you pay for Whois Privacy hefty $7.95 and there are no coupon codes for Whois Privacy.

      all charged $7.52 per .com domain registration, renewal and/or transfer. (ICANN
      fee of $0.18 + VeriSign COM/NET Registry fee of $7.34)

      Speaking of which, .com prices will go up again on January 15, 2012.

    Yes it is cheap but you might have to compensate it on another things. Like for renewal. Namecheap is still my favorite registrar :-)

    It is cheap mate. I usually buy from namecheap for around $9 everytime.
    I prefer to use namecheap always because they offer free privacy.

    Price isn't the only factor to consider.

    While I know I can register some domains cheaper elsewhere, I'm much happier paying a little more to use NameCheap as they are very reliable, their user interface is great (no getting bombarded with upsells like you do with GoDaddy), they offer free privacy guard for the 1st year and their prices on the whole are very competitive.
