Hi,
I'm new here and from just posting up one thing, I can already tell that what I wanted to do is going to be alot harder. I'm a young person that want's to try and get 2 Business online running before the age of 20, this would be in selling items online. I've had this ambission for a long time, and I wan't to try and at least get one running before the end of next year. I post about a couple of days ago about trying to get a wholesaler to supply me with products, but it seems that their is such a massive market out their that its hard to get the right product for the right price, I'm wondering if you guys can try and get me on track, so I know what to look for and how to know the right item to sell. I want to try and get one business up and running on ebay selling a large varity of items and then another business selling a large amount of items on my own site. These aims are very high and may be stupid but I would like to give it ago, I just feel that I need direction so I don't go wasting my money and could possbily hit my aims.
Please don't troll me :'(
Regards Ryan!
Thanks guys!

Sounds like you need somebody who has actual participated in this sort of stuff before and somebody who has been successful, I am sure there are probably quite a few on this forum, they should hopefully find this thread and tell you how to get yourself off the ground.

      Hi BinghamxD,

This is a very competitive business area you are thinking of.

What is it exactly that draws you to that type of business?

Do you have any unique insight, business plan or something else that you feel gives you an edge that will allow you to go into that market and compete with the established businesses already there?

Do you have any relevant experience that is going to aid with this?

What have you done so far to analyse the market and find an 'in'?

These aims are very high and may be stupid
The best way to prove that they aren't 'stupid' is to explain to us (and more importantly yourself) exactly why they are not, hence the nature of my questions.

      Hope this helps.

The stuff that draws me into business is the fact that I'm studying it at the moment and it is enjoyable to learn, I've also sold many items on ebay but only items I've baught myself and sold for more, recent one I've done is were I baught a Ipad 32GB for 210 pounds and sold it for 310 pounds this was included with Keyboard and HD Cable witch both then sold for 20-30 pound each.
I've really got no plan, I've been looking for wholesalers but from reaserch I found that this isnt really the way forward.
I've really done no reaserch, but I'm going to do reaserch when I can find out if Its a business I can get into and I really would like to.
        Thanks,
        Ryan

Ryan, there are a few ways of looking at this.

First, do you want to pursue something that you have a great love, passion and knowledge about? If so, is there a market for this subject...that is the crucial thing. If there is no market for something that you have a great interest in then you're onto a dud from the outset.

Second, you can find a good market for a well selling product or niche, then sell that product to that niche.

There are so many variables and ways to approach this. I would take some time looking around at what is selling well now. Use Google, Amazon, eBay, etc to see what people are buying.

You don't mention your age or skills but remember that the IM world changes very rapidly so what may be a good niche or product now will not be in a few years.

Also you must consider that you will need to have some skills to become successful at what you will be doing. If you have no skills and are not sure, and depending how much time you have spare, it would be a good idea to start learning some basic skills now.

Just one new thing a week would be good. There is a saying that it only takes about 15 hours of hard study or work to become an 'expert' at some skill. Something like website building or blogging, article writing or Keywords, Social Media like Facebook and Twitter, etc. etc. The list seems almost endless.

Just remember that neither you nor anyone else will ever get anywhere by flitting from one thing to the next. Pick one thing only and stick with it.

      Go For It!

      Hope this helps.

Thankyou very much,I'm happy to learn and I'm going to stick with it! Even if it makes me broke! I'm going to try and look for things that will teach me about the skills, do you have any books/guides in mind?
        Thanks

    Hey BinghamxD

My first advice to you is know your numbers

This is especially important since you are doing business by selling physical products... meaning you will have to fork out your own money as initial investment at some point in time

Know your market size, know your market reach and forecast your possible revenue based on the numbers you have

Make sure that you are confident of your numbers before your put any actual investments into it

Don't be reckless and make the same mistake I made when I was excited and got started!

Also, it can be wise to get a partner who complements your character so that you will make decisions more carefully

    Just my 2 cents!

I agree, with all, espically the partner idea.
But how can I find a partner?

Do you have any acquaintance who is interested in doing business too?

It's down to you to find a partner that you know you can work with

I got my first partner from my school so I'm sure there will be opportunities for you to find one!

    Hey Bingham,

Check out Jim Cockrum's book "Silent Sales Machine". Reviews are saying that the book teaches you on how to use eBay to promote products and get more sales. I've read his other book "Free Marketing 101" and I learnt alot of new stuffs. I think the book will be great for you.

    Cheers.

        Hi BinghamxD,

        (RE post# 10)

Unless I'm mistaken, I think Jim Cockrum's book is about list building on ebay from your 'about' page (although it is a good ebook if I remember correctly, it was some years ago when I read it) - it's not really related to your question.

I've really got no plan, I've been looking for wholesalers but from reaserch I found that this isnt really the way forward.
        I've really done no reaserch
I don't want to be negative or a naysayer, but I think the odds are that with that approach you will get eaten alive and lose money. It's really easy to be busy making no money on ebay not least due to the competition, pricing wars and ebay fees.

I'm going to stick with it! Even if it makes me broke!
Again, not good to hear from a wannabe business-person. This is the wrong approach.

I used to drop-ship on ebay and also sold goods that I kept in stock at my home business. I sold info-products on there for a few years and I've been a successful ebay affiliate for about four years (just so you know that I'm not blowing smoke.)

I think you need to look at my earlier questions and ask yourself how you can get to a stage without too much investment (financial loss) where you can answer those type of questions adequately - then move forward with your business and invest in it.

I'm not trolling you above, just another valuable lesson because the more you help yourself with the easy stuff, the more people will help you with stuff that's more difficult and the more likely you are to succeed in business.

The new version of Silent Sales Machine is fully updated and just released. It has very little of the old content in it, and only briefly addresses the matter of eBay/about me page lead generation. In fact eBay is maybe 10% of the content overall.

All past readers should have gotten a free copy of the latest version last week.

Take a look what others are selling, look how successful they are, go into advance settings and look at completed listings for items, go behind the sellers front page by clicking on the numbers in the brackets next to their username and see what they are selling regularly.

There are lots of ways to find out what hot products are selling on ebay, then simply sell that product better, add even more value, beef up the package and make it stand out. Just because other people are selling a product should not put you off, it simply shows there is a market. We once found a guy selling a product, he was making around 80 to 100 pound per day, we sourced the product, added a bit extra to it and we still sell that product today, it just ticks along nicely.

    All the best,
    Steven.
