After sales follow-up: Who does it?

I've just started doing after-sales follow up and I'm curious to know who else does this when they sell products online.

I'm sending out a simple message a few hours after product sales, saying something like:

Greetings [name],

Thanks for your purchase!

Your enjoyment of this product is important to me. Please let me know how well you get on with it,

With best regards,

Alex Newman.

I think this is good for several reasons:

1) Building relationships. People love to feel like you actually care - and as they say, your hottest list is the list of people who have already purchased from you.

2) You get to find out which parts of your product could use work - invaluable.

3) Quite often, if the product is good, people might not say anything but given the mic, they might start raving about the product, in which case you can ask them if you can quote them as a testimonial.

4) Even if you don't go so far as to take a user survey, you could ask specific questions - like "what would you like to see more of in the second edition?" or "what other topics are you interested in learning about?" You get targeted ideas for future products.

Alex.
