It would help if you already have a good following on Facebook, Twitter etc. of people who actually pay attention to what you have to say.

Agreed, I've got a new site and I've outsourced some monthly backlinking, so whilst my team are underway with that, im targeting social groups that relate to my niche...facebook groups/fan pages are very lucrative, building followers on twitter is also a very good way of promoting a new website, also forum posting is a great way to reach out to your target market. There are so many avenues to exploit online, just my two cents...

      Watson.

Would depend on the website and what you hope to accomplish with the website.

These days if you are good at writing and creating content I would 1st use social media depending on your niche. I would get a Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Facebook fan page and post to all 4 with a social media management app like Tweet Deck or Hootsuite about your site.

Social media if done right can get a buzz going about your site quicker than SEO. I would write articles, blog, and work on SEO for the long term.

If you have a product or news about your business I would also post on sites like Craigslist, AgreaterTown, and StoreBoard. If you have a local focused website I'd also pass out business and post card sized flyers.

I'd also invest in Facebook ads and even Google PPC if it made monetary sense for you. Good luck.

I think you hit the nail on the head here. A good combination of SEO, Social Bookmarking and quality backlinks, is a good way to start. For new site, the results can take a bit of time to settle down, so you may also notice that you position on Google jumps about a bit.

Just do a little bet of link building on it at first, few bookmarks and directory submission will do, don't generate more backlink at fresh site.

Network with other sites in your niche. Inquire about doing a guest post that will feature a link back to your site. Also, submit your blog content to EzineArticles.com to increase article syndication (so the post can be picked up by others needing content in your niche, also giving you a back link).
