SEO Using Other Language? (for bilingual people)

Suppose that, aside from english, you are fluent in another language. Would you rather go global and fight the english competition, or use your second language skill to tap into much less competitive SEO keywords?

I investigated a few keywords in french in the google keyword tool and was surprised to see the amount of monthly searches while having VERY low competition, pr0 sites on page 1 of results. On the other hand, it seems harder to monetize the traffic but I haven't gone all out on searching for french affiliate programs. Certainly amazon.fr, or other multilingual networks could be good. I personally think creating good content in french would be much easier since you have a huge amount of english content you can translate from.

I'd be very interested to hear if people who've tried this found it worthwhile, or what major roadblocks you may have encountered?

I brainstormed about this a time ago. Here in Brazil is very hard because almost all campaigns avaible are PPC and they pay to little. You enter in some site about design and you see shoes or elethronics campaigns. Something like that.

And the average brazilian is ceptical about buy online and the e-books wouldn't sell. Any product that is imported, except books, have a tax of 60%. So, the iPADs aren't that popular.

No mentioning that the top blogs here(the most common way to make IE here) are personal or about teenager things or...blogs, the Adsense being the system that pay more well.

So, I surrendered and now I'm trying to improve my english.

Talking about that, if you found some grammar or spelling error, please, notice me. Thanks.

I do a little bit of both. I have some sites in English and some in other foreign languages, including those I don't speak. I just have that content translated professionally.

I make all of my foreign sites CPS though because of low CPCs with AdSense.
