Locally backing up a worpdress site!

Hello Warriors,

What are the important things to keep in mind to locally back up a wordpress website?

I am still currently researching for clear steps on how to do it, however I need to hear some inputs from you fellow warriors based from your own experiences.

Any information you may provide will be highly appreciated.

Thanks,
Louie Tugas

I'm using a plugin for WordPress to backup my site (files and database) to DropBox (awesome service if you haven't used it, it's free to sign-up).

Plugin is called WordPress Backup to Dropbox

I use the Export feature in Wordpress. Then if I need to move to a new server, I just create a new Wordpress installation on the new server through the cpanel using Fantastico. Then in the new Wordpress installations I use the Import feature.

For me this has been the easiest way to move a site.

Ive been an IT engineer for 20 years and never rely on plugins to back my sites up

I download via ftp, everything in the public_html directory

then export the database(s) via the CPanel and MySQL section

If you need to reinport it later, you can use BigDump

robbiestone makes a good point. It's never a bad idea to have a backup of a backup.

I do the same thing. I'm kind of paranoid about it.

If you just want to grab a backup of your WP site, you need only three things: the wp-content folder, the file 'wp-config.php' and a database dump.

You can re-create a WP site from just those 3 items - and arguably, you don't even NEED the wp-config.php file as it can be created easily.

They are truly a big help.

How I wish I can find a step by step guide for this.
