Best way to monetize a site?

I'm in the process of redesigning one of my sites and wondered what the best way to generate money from it would be.

Is it better to have ads which pay out based on commission or click throughs?

It's quite a niche site that only really gets massive amounts of traffic during a select few months of the year, although I'm planning on branching out to start getting traffic all year round, but would make it less of a niche site?

Any suggestions?

It depends on you.You can use Google Adsense,Affiliate programs or develop and sell your own product. But I would advise you to experiment with some methods and then stick with one which is most suitable for you. After all there is not one size fits all approach. Some people are successful in monetizing their sites with Ad Networks some have success with affiliate programs but most of the people use a combination of both which fits their needs

You'll really never know for sure until you split test different types of ads. Adsense will do better for some sites, while affiliate programs fit better than others. You can buy or create an ad rotation script which will allow you to compare the performance of multiple ads types.

Once you have enough metrics to compare you should be able to determine a winner.

      Hope that helps.

It depends on what type of content your site has and what type of visitors you are getting.

For example contextual ads such as adsense usually work well for informational sites and visitors where affiliate offers may not convert too well. Affiliate offers or products convert best if visitors are already close to buying rather than just looking for information.

Despite what some might say you can use both those types of monetization on the same site, just look at some busy sites that are similar to yours and you should get a good idea of what will work for your site.

    Cheers folks.

The site is music festival oriented, so visitors will be looking for information on the festival. I was planning on monetizing using affiliate links to ticket selling sites and camping equipment sites.

It actually depends on your content though. Besides, there is no packaged method that I can advice. The best you can do is test and test. You'll find what works best. All the different methods are capable of fetching money for you

How about you try some CPA offers that revolve around music.

Are there really significant profit potential from ticket sales? The two main concerns you have here is ease of tracking & higher conversions vs. your ability to sell your PPC to these affiliates and vendors. It will be a lot easier to convince somebody that you will send them new customers and they only pay a part of their profit from these sales, where as trying to sell a PPC option to these same people may likely end up with many no's because these vendors have no idea how profitable or costly such a PPC will be. However, tracking of PPC will be much easier, especially for equipment rental deals. Non-PPC tracking will typically leaving you at the mercy of the honesty of your vendors. And of course PPC will typically convert better than a Sale after the click.

Of course this is all based on assumptions. You really don't know until you try it and see how each method converts the best. I believe that the best way is to create both options and let your vendors choose the option that they are most comfortable with.

With all of the ups and downs lately I have decided to monetise my sites more with paying advertisers. I'm adding more good quality regular content and removing some of the affiliate links. Got some software that helps to place the ads and take payments, just figuring out where to put them and how much to charge.

From my experience the best way to monetize your blog is to create a product like an e-book. I have done it with my Twitter Marketing E-book and I recommend all bloggers to try and create their own products. Your product will provide value even when you are not physically present and it will allow you to take a break from posting new content once in a while. It will basically let you stop trading your hours for dollars.

This is some good advice, and would be a great supplement to whatever other method you choose...in fact, if done well and priced right, it could be a real money maker for you while providing your visitors valuable information about the festival.

      1. You create an ebook manual "Definitive Guide to XYZ Music Fest"...
      2. Visitor either buys or downloads for free. Either way, they get added to your optin list...you do have a list right?
      3. User finds real value in your guide and clicks an affiliate link or two that you have strategically placed in your ebook (best music fest camping chair, tent, water bottle, stove etc...all individual links)
You make money with ebook purchase + affiliate links + you know have a VERY targeted list of people waiting to get an email about music fest (or related information and products).
      4. Setup an Autoresponder series leading up to the event...even all year long...detailing "how to be prepared" or something like that...

      Hope that helps the brainstorming

You can do split testing using google website optimizer..As it is niche related site which has traffic in specific period then..selling product related to that niche will give you more returns...
Personally if I were you I would have tried to collect email addresses & pitch them multiple products via email..that would be ..long term beneficial
