    There is no comparison. MS has way too many features. Only a 1 time $97, must have for IM in my book.

    Keyword research - could use google external adwords keyword tool (free)
    Seo competition (website stats like domain age, pr, backlinks, keyword in meta) - some of this you can get from installing the SEO Quake plugin on your firefox, it is free. But remember, it gives you yahoo links, which is 1/10 ( total estimate, just way less) less than majestic seo, which is what MS pulls from.

    All depends on which part of MS you need, what are trying to do?

    There is nothing free that will come even close as Market Samurai was not free to develop and update.

      The keyword portion of Market Samurai is free, otherwise you can use googles keyword tool. For competition analysis I will sometimes use the free version of traffic travis.

    I am using SERPAttacks in combination with the google keyword tool. I am a newbie at IM and I used it to get an idea of how competitive and how popular my main keywords are. But it is not nearly as good as MS I have come to understand. As soon as I make enough to get MS I will def get it. But for now this basic info does the trick for me.

    i actually use traffictravis, the free edition, for quite a few things... namely to see how difficult it'll be to rank for a keyword/phrase.

    My vote goes to Traffic Travis as well.

    Even though I mainly use Google Keyword Tool, Market Samurai, and Micro Niche Finder these days for keyword research, the free version of Traffic Travis is usually open on my computer as well for quick research.

    I tend to use traffic travis and also seo spyglass (both free). When it comes to keyword research and getting more accurate numbers I use semrush. This can be used via the free version although it does limit you to only a certain number of queries. The paid version of semrush is about $69 a month but in my opinion well worth it
