Traffic went from 60 to 8 overnight

I was regularly getting traffic in the 60 people a day range on a newer site. I was starting to actually make money that could be sustainable, for about 3 months. Then October 19th it went from 60 to less than 10 everyday and has been since. Is there anything specific that I can find out that might be the reason? Any ideas on how to get back where I was.

What is the quality of the content that you hav on this site? Is it unique content? Have you been building links to this site consistantly? Do you have Adsense on this site? There are many variables.

I wouldn't just give up on it though. Sometimes sites drop and then come back a few weeks later.

Have you been monitoring your rankings?

One of your high-traffic keywords probably dropped off the map for some reason.

Work on getting this back and continue link building and you should see your traffic climb back up.

If it is not this then where has your 60 visitors come from?

We need to know this before we can determine why they are not coming to your site anymore.

Traffic tends to fluctuate anyway, and with only 60 visitors a day, it's hard to tell why your traffic has dropped off.

Where did your visitors come from? Did you have one great link from another site which fell off the radar? Were you doing social media marketing (that traffic fluctuates.)

Go back to your marketing plan. Keep doing whatever you were doing. Chances are that as your traffic increases from your new efforts, the previous traffic will come back too.

Short answer: keep moving, don't worry about it.

    Going forward:

    * Check your stats to see how your visitors landed on your site. Do more of whatever form of marketing sends you the most traffic;

    * Vary your marketing efforts. Never rely solely on one form of traffic;

    * Build a LIST. That's the best source of on-going traffic.

All content is original. No adsense. The content is good. I do see one keyword dropped off, but it wasn't a majority keyword. The two keywords that are the biggest ones are still getting clicks, they are now just getting 3 clicks instead of 50. When I search on those keywords I still see my site.

I was using ping kaching to submit when new articles are done. And then I bought backlinks from phillipinesbacklinks.

Did these big keywords move in the SERPs at all?

Even moving from position 1 to position 3 in Google can reduce your traffic from 50 to 3 in a pretty typical scenario...

This is where my newness shows, I am not sure if I am even seeing the right searches ever. I know google cookies your browser so my searches might not be pure, and I do not know of something external that can do it for me. So I do not know if I am appearing first on google search for a keyword. Is there a better way to monitor this?

Has your webhost an Awstats activated on your account? you can check (almost at the bottom) the keyword referral traffic.

Or, you can signup for a Google Analytics account (its free) and use it as metric to see the incoming traffic (keywords), then use some rank tracking tool to monitor your rankings.

About your "right searches" question - One thing I do to keep my search results accurate is to enable the "Delete browsing history on exit" setting in Internet Explorer if that happens to be your main browser. This clears history, cookies, temp files, etc. I use IE for rank checking of my keywords and Firefox for all other browsing.

Or, use Chrome, CTRL + SHIFT + N = new private browser, no cookies set.

I believe that October 13th Google released another search algorithm update. Find which KWs lost ranking, it is mostly 'cause the page that was getting ranked was not really optimized for that KW. Update or create a new page for the KW and add few backlinks to it (social bookmarks + web20), add some EDU backlinks and maybe a press release or two to the mix also, and increase your social LIKEs and Google+ votes. Most importantly wait, wait and wait, also don't go crazy trying to fix everything at once, take your time.

How old is the site? You said its a newer site, so there is a good chance its doing the Google dance. Newer sites often rank high in the SERPs early on, then their position fluctuates for a while for a good 3-4 months until it settles in a position.

    LOL Justin

Most likely you lost some backlinks somewhere along the line.

I went from 800 visitors per day to 250-300 per day for one of my sites.

Turns out Yahoo! Answers deleted all of my answers from 2 years ago. I had a 70% best answer rating, all of them pointing back to my site.

They took me from a Level 7 contributor down to a Level 1.

    LOL

Still working my way back up from that one.

On October 14th one of my sites went from about 160 - 200 visitors a day from two keywords down to about 35 - 50 visitors a day until now. I had a #1 ranking for both those keywords and now they are ranked around #5 for both. It was all organic traffic and the site was monetised with AdSense. Very disheartening as this was a good little money producer. I've continued building links but it hasn't recovered yet.

    ^ Google panda my man.

On another note, to check your rankings without any bias, go to Scroogle Scraper and perform your search there. It will return a more accurate ranking.

On October 13th I had a site that was getting over 600 a day fall to less than half that and it hasn't recovered yet. I have adsense on it and was making most of my money that way through Google search traffic. No new content lately on the site, so maybe that will help. I tried a backlink service and have over 800 new backlinks, but that hasn't even helped at all.

unfortunately there are inevitable factors such as change in algorithm. If such an update does end up affecting your traffic, it will also affect others. Search Google and fine tune the results by date to see if anyone else experienced a change. There’s little you can do in the short time, you need to hope further algorithm tweaks will restore your ranking or you’ll need to optimize your site better in accordance with new update.

Yes, it really sucks when that happens. I also had a website that dropped 120 a day to now about 30 a day, which was not much, but it has made quite a difference. When i checked , it dropped rankings quite significantly. Now, its completely off the radar.

continue adding content, and building links, hopefully that will work for me n the long run also
