There are two arguments to buying lists. Some will argue that you should build your own list, so you can build a relationship with your subscribers from the beginning. Others will argue that you can start a relationship at any point.

I think that there is some validity to both sides of the argument.

I agree with both sides as well...

"buying a list" can and IS done behind the scenes ALL the time - usually legit - sometimes not so legit - however - it CAN be done without the list EVER knowing...

For example - if you buy an established site with a mailing list - you can just assume the same role as "www. your new fancy site .com" and the readers never know the difference - heck you'll likely be a better "marketer" than the person you bought if from and can thus make the relationship STRONGER...

I've done this in several niches outside of IM and it's almost funny how others undervalue their site and will sell it dirt cheap because the sites doesn't make much income... But they have mailing lists of 1000s of people (I once got a site that had 17K! -granted about 5K were dead - but still worth the price tag) and they don't even realize the value of the list...

Now - outside of that - buying a list becomes more of a 'gray-area' for example - the person selling it may have the rights to do so (via the TOS/privacy policy) but that doesn't necessarily give the person buying the list (you) the right the email these folks...

But in some niches like IM - people have no clue how many lists they are on and so they may never notice a new sender...

However - let's say you have a similar TOS - privacy policy, then you could technically just "swap" lists... see how this starts getting "grey"...

I'll stop rambling... the moral of the story is - yes it can be done in the right situation and be 100% legal and kosher and vice versa...

      hope that helps

    My advice...don't do it.

It is important that you build that relationship with the persons on your list. If you buy your list then they will only see your email as someone else who's trying to get their money...Don't do it!!

How can you come to that conclusion without knowing what it is that he is marketing or how the list he is interested in buying was built?

What if he is a mortgage broker and he is interested in buying lists of people that are interested in refinancing their homes. Would you still give the same advice?

Attracting subscribers is a deliberate process.

The only thing you’re really buying when you buy an email list… is a massive headache.Because that’s what you end up with after dealing with the damage that purchased email lists do to your email deliverability and your reputation as someone doing business online.

Don't even bother buying a list. Most people are so sick of spam that if they haven't white listed you, they will never see the emails you send them anyway as they go directly to the spam folder.

It isn't just about having a big list. It is about having a quality list. The end result is that you want to have a good client base, offer good service to them and then make money for the service you offer.

To me, you only get that quality list by doing it yourself.

Put up a squeeze page and instead of buying a list, spend your money on some effective ways to get targetted traffic to your squeeze page (or get the traffic yourself with all the free methods).

I belong to the clan of "Don't-buy-lists". It's better, for me at least, to build your own lists, slowly but steadily

Yes i agree with other posts. Build you own list and let them get familiar with you. If you just buy the list your message will go strait to the trash.
