How to deal with competition?

It's almost one year on IM business. So far I got:

$7 from affiliate
$2 from selling IM related MRR ebooks
$5 from middleman job selling targeted twitter followers.

But that's all. After that I haven't got anymore sales no matter how hard I tried to promote. I feel stuck. Maybe too many people selling the same, and I have no idea how to compete.

Then yesterday I met someone who offer me to become his middleman to sell SEO service and he will give me decent commission. Frankly I'm happy to find opportunity like this. But considering SEO service is tough competition, I feel hesitate to give it a go. How can I offer the service that is here and everywhere with various prices? Moreover, the price of his service is over $100. Will someone buy SEO service over $100?

I know this is just newbie thinking because I had zero experience on selling and marketing. But I feel like I have no clue of where to sell it and how to deal with competition.

What value I can add to make the service different from other same services?

Where to sell that expensive service?

Is it just a matter of good sales letter that intriguing everyone to buy so that I can make good sales?

Is it possible to promote it with no cost?

Please advise.

Thanks

If you believe the service is of great quality and you tried it yourself - then you can promote it. Everywhere. But how about them testing their service on your good quality website/blog/offer? Then you'll much easier promote the service that does it job really good.

For promotion tips, just read many threads here at WF. And yes, it can sell for more than $100. Again, quality, brand and proof is what counts.

Here's Marketing 101 for you on standing out of the competition:

Identify your USP or a unique selling point - regardless of what you're selling. How?
      • Create a list of every single benefit that you're going to provide to your target audience.
      • Become the Bruce Lee of your niche - know your weaknesses in order to work on your strengths.
      • Get some customer feedback about the service/product you're promoting. Analyze this feedback as it holds some key points on what you can do to be different from the rest.
      • Study and look into your competition. See who it's made up of. Know your competition like the back of your hand. It takes work, I know - but what choice do you have?
      • Once you know what your USP is, don't hide it. Scream it out at the top of your lungs. Let the world know that YOU are different.

You've made $14 in one year?

You should stop going from one thing to another but really work on one. There is no magical trick, just hard work and everything is out there.

Selling SEO service is hard and not for beginners.

      Hi guys,

      Thanks for your responds

Yeah I've been here and everywhere searching for magic button . But this time I decided to focus on on thing. Since I have no product and other skill to offer, I think I will focus on middleman job.

But what do you think, should I focus on one service? Or can I become middleman of various services? e.g. twitter followers, SEO, and FB like?

EVERYONE has a skill to offer! You just have to identify what YOUR unique skill is Think of all the things that interest you...obviously making an income online is one of them...then focus on promoting that interest from your perspective through Blogging, Social Media, etc...

If you're passionate about what you do, it will come through to others and they will listen to what you have to say...especially if it's coming from the heart.

We help newbies and "traditional" businesses find their voice online and start their journey into promoting whatever it is they have to offer and the toughest FIRST step....is BELIEVING that others want to listen to what you have to say

Definitely diversify, you never want to rely on just one resource or one stream of income...

For example, that $7 affiliate sale. Could you continue to promote that?

If you do decide to move on to promoting the SEO service, I suspect brick and mortar (physical buildings, not just online) businesses would be your best bet. For example, a beauty salon owner in Anytown might want to rank highly for "hair cuts Anytown."

I think these 2 posts show how confusing internet marketing can be. They are next to each other chronologically, the first one says stick with one strategy, the next one says diversify

To be honest being a "middleman" is just as HARD as internet marketing.

Every day I am approached by people asking me to be their "middleman" (I have a large network so people assume they can use it!)

For you to be a middleman you won't get paid unless you're good. It's a win win for the SEO guy. He only has to pay you if you're good and has no need to worry otherwise.

Are you prepared to work hard for someone else when you've had no success so far?

Before you put all your time and energy into helping someone else make money learn how to do it for yourself.

When you get that right you can then provide lots of different services and be the middleman man for them or alternatively if it works well think about setting up your own SEO/services company and outsourcing it to your SEO guy

There are lots of options you can do but you need to think about you and you first.

If your not already, focus on just one campain. That way you can tweek and retweek to learn what it needs to become profitable. Then you will have a better understanding of what to do for your others. Don't give up, think of how much more you know compaired to a year ago. Find someone with more experience than you to bounce ideas off of that runs campains similar to yours.

If he can provide proof that his methods work, that your potential clients can actually call to verify, that would be the only way to even consider being a middleman. Othewise you''re better off continuing in your IM experience. Don't get discouraged. Keep learning, the fact that you made any money your first year is better than many can say.

If you promote to real companies $1000 or even $10000 is nothing for SEO. But then you actually have to know what you're doing....

If you've made such crappy profits maybe you need to focus your time on better content/products....

I agree with ZaphodBeebleBrox on identifying what YOUR unique skill is.

If you stuck on selling products, why don't you try other types of internet marketing? for example CPA? Or maybe writing articles?

I've gone through being an poker affiliate, clickbank affiliate, incentivized cpa publisher and after a few years find out that non incentivized cpa marketing works best and brings me the most money.

But that just me. Find a niche that you feel comfortable at and put all your efforts there.

As an affiliate marketer or middleman, your job is to bring buyers to sellers.

Is it possible to do that without money? Yes, if you are willing to exchange your time for money.

Well, how good of a writer are you?

If you weren't very good at convincing people to buy your own products, how good do you expect to be at selling other people's products? How good are you going to be helping someone decide what SEO service to buy when you're shocked that people would pay more than a hundred bucks for SEO services?

I'm not asking you these questions to discourage you, but to remind you that you need to work in something that plays into your skills. What are they?

Richest, competition is never the problem.

    Here's the problem: BELIEF.

You're promoting stuff you don't believe in. This leads to a lack of confidence in your promotions. Your buyers immediately sense your lack of belief, so, no sales.

You said: "Is it just a matter of good sales letter that intriguing everyone to buy so that I can make good sales?"

Please, stop trying to promote stuff just for the sake of it.

I'm a copywriter. I've been doing this for a long, long time. Longer than you've been alive, probably. :-)

Over the years, I've learned NEVER to try to write if I don't believe in the product. If I don't LOVE something, how can I convince others to buy it?

    My advice:

Find something you LOVE. Make it something that's so wonderful that you can't wait to tell your friends about it.

Make sure that your something has an affiliate program. If not, find another way to make money from your enthusiasm -- create an AdSense site, perhaps.

You can't fake enthusiasm, and enthusiasm SELLS. When you promote things you love, your sincerity shines through. You'll make sales.

Re "Then yesterday I met someone who offer me to become his middleman to sell SEO service and he will give me decent commission."

Please don't worry about the competition. Or the pricing -- $100 is not the issue. Large companies spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on services like SEO.

As I've said, your challenge is yourself: your belief.

Here's how to build your belief -- understand whatever it is you're selling, first...

    * Start by learning about SEO (or whatever)

    * Next, focus on the market -- who's buying it? Why? What does it do for them?

You can't believe in something if you don't understand it.

The more you know, the more you'll believe in SEO (or whatever.)

The more you believe, the more your confidence will grow.

    You'll make sales.

    Angela

Wow! A lot of advices. Thanks

The last one from Angela really hit me . It's a matter of Belief.

Some of you advised me to find my unique skills and find what I love to do.

Okay, let's see what I can do or love to do. Umm....

      • I can write in English but not perfect English. There's grammatical error here and there. So I have no confident yet to write article
      • I like watching action movies and listening rock music, can this hobby make some money?
      • I can setup simple wordpress and Joomla website. But only setup, I'm horrible at design the logo or header image. I don't know about HTML, CSS, or php. I made several websites for my friends but all use free templates and free plugins. Can this little skill compete with other professional web designers?
      • I love reading self help book or ebook. Can I make money from reading?
      • I love browsing the Internet and downloading free stuffs. Can I make money with this hobby?
Wow, look at my belief. It's all full of doubt

I think I must work on my belief first
