Tips for a website where users give you their email addy?

Hey fellow WFers,

I was wondering if anybody had any up-to-date tips on how to make a successful email harvesting website. To define an "email harvesting website", I am referring to a website which has useful information and a compelling reason for a user to submit their email address to you, often for the purposes of gaining more information that the website presents.

Does anybody have any tips/ideas for doing this in the current economic market, as well as current SE methodologies?

Thanks in advance!

edit: Changed subject to be more appropriate per user's feedback

I am hoping, I got the question correct here. You want to know how you can get your opt-in rate increase from your website?

You need to offer value for your readers. Research your niche for the top 5 problems they have. Then compile a free report, e Book with solutions to all these 5 problems.

    You will get sign ups.

You're talking about squeeze pages at the least or simple registration pages. Email harvesting is typically a black hat spammer operation - highly frowned upon. Luckily I read your whole post before going nuclear ;-)

As for how to collect email addresses - use the search button on this forum - lots of useful information has been provided over the years.

    Good luck,

Don't use a very long page, don't use video or graphics.

Don't have anything else on the page except the optin box. No other links nothing else to click on.

    Have a good headline.

Spell out the problem the customer has and then spell out how by signing up, you are going to help them and spell out the solution you have for them.

Then write a little conclusion and put the opt in box.

Tested and still works and converts the best for me.

    Thanks for the responses all!

By email harvesting, I mean a user reads your website, finds the information useful enough to want to give you their email address to learn more. 100% legit.

I guess the question is this: How do you get them to give you their email? Do you say you will send them a PDF? Or access to a VIP section of a website? Or do you straight up say you will send them weekly/monthly email tips?

That is sorta the lingo I am wondering, what is the short paragraph that you say to "sell" them on giving you their email.

Never use the term "email harvesting" as has already been mentioned in the thread. Despite what you think, this term is bad news. Use it at your peril.

You can do any of those. Just ensure that your "free" offer or 'bribe' to get the visitor to sign up, is relevant to your website. That is; if your website is about flower gardening then make sure that you send your new subscriber information relating to flower gardening. Nothing else.

      I hope that this helps,

      Jeff.

Best possible way to get the highest conversions, if you can afford it, is to do a valuable contest. It's popular to do an iPad2 but you are likely to get many people who are not your targeted audience. Give away something that only, or at least mostly, your targeted audience will find very valuable. If it is really valuable it will be easy to make your contest go viral... but again, only it is within your financial means.

Ahh, okay so my definition of email harvesting, which is legit, isn't really the industry definition, which is a dirty one. Gotcha, I'll make sure not to state it like that

What would be the proper terminology of a website which provides valuable information, and exists for users to give you their email address for you to send them more information? Is that exactly what a squeeze page is?

Thanks, this info is mega useful. I will probably follow that exactly. It makes sense, too.

Is the no-video thing because it could distract, or even completely solve their problem?
