I think I just strayed into one - and no, I'm not smoking, drinking or taking anything.

I posted an ad in the Warriors Wanted section for a copywriter. I've had 3 replies so far.

One was an unsolicited email telling me the person didn't do copywriting!
One provider tells me "We can render you professional writer that can turn out sales into your site"
One provider tell ms "I am a copy writer can I see your link and I can tell you wat I can do to help you"

I've edited my ad to ask for a high standard of grammatical English!

Come on guys - if you're offering services as a copywriter (or any kind of writer) make sure that your contact email or PM reflects the service you offer.

ps - does anyone know a good copywriter?

You'd have thought they'd have realised you could write better copy than them anyway....

....apart from the first one, because that one must have been smoking, drinking or taking something.

ps - does anyone know a good copywriter?
Ken Strong has a splendid reputation and I'm sure he could do with the cash now too, failing that I'm sure he could point you where to go.

Hahaha that's hilarious... People think that because they can write English, they're also copywriters. To be honest, I think you need at least some kind of course, even if it's a good eBook, in copywriting to do it professionally. There's a lot more to it than just 'writing'.

Maybe that's the problem right there - people are mistaking 'writing' for 'copywriting'...

I am betting that they think "copywriting" means to "copy" "writing"... :p

copywriting is EXACTLY that ... its the process of the method called ROTA 300 yrs ago ... where children have the original text on the line above and they have to 'copy' it exactly on the line below ... hence the name copy-writing .....

Definitely an area of interest of mine, one to wit, I am challenged to find out.

However, after seeing some of the responses around here lately for writing services "claiming to be" article writers, copywriters, and the like, it doesn't surprise me to see the responses you've received.

Personally, I have yet to really give it a go, nor am I advertising any writing services, but if you get in a pinch...

You could pm me the details and I'd gladly take a shot at it, then we'll discuss it's value should it suit your needs.

Who knows what my pen may yield?

    All the Best,

The rant here - and amending the original ad - worked. I've now had several good quality replies. The problem now is going to be choosing!

Eew, well, I never think you quote in public onto the forum. I make only private offer only to turn out only and copy sales.

When you're dealing with a new unproven copywriting prospect have them write one original article based soley on the topic you give them. What they write is up to them. It's a test. You just want to see a sample that helps you determine their understanding of the task.

A good topic to choose is - "How to Quit Smoking Cold Turkey".

      You'll learn a lot...

How to Quit Smoking Cold Turkey

        1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
        2. Place the turkey in the oven.
        3. Remove the turkey in 30 minutes.

Now you can smoke a warm turkey instead.

        Do I get the job?

Ah yes, maybe so ... but to be fair many of those did last two weeks in their positions: the ones who also assure us that they enjoy the full confidence of the Prime Minister/President tend to last only one week.

I know exactly how you feel! I go through this with writers, software developers, and graphics people all the time! I even blogged about it once.

Here is an excerpt from that post...

About a month ago, I posted a thread in a chat forum to recruit a new writer. The thread was very specific in what I wanted. I specifically stated that all applicants must:

    1. submit a sample article with their initial contact
    2. provide links to at least five of their articles that were previously published
    3. write with perfect English and grammar
    4. be available for multiple articles per week

Within just a few minutes, my inbox was filled with people wanting the gig. The very first message that I read was a single line that said something like, "sir I can do the work you had request". I contemplated whether to just hit the delete button or reply telling the "writer" that he was a good for nothing loser. I chose the later and it felt good.

Out of the first 100 responses that I read, only a couple of them actually followed the directions. One of them was hired and continues to receive well paying jobs from me every week.

It may sound cliche to say, but it is a fact that you only get one first impression. If you are seeking work as a writer, webmaster, or even a waiter for that matter, make sure that you present yourself as a professional.

If you fail to follow the first instructions that a potential employer gives you, what do you think the chances of being hired for the job are?

I do feel I should add here that I have the greatest respect for anyone whose first language isn't English. I know there are many regular, well respected Warriors whose first language is something else and I don't want anyone to feel that I'm intending to put them down or laugh at them.

It's just that we all have to be reasonable about our own abilities. I can read French, but I wouldn't offer to write anything.

I agree -- there's nothing wrong with people who cannot speak English very well. But it does "cost" them when they try to market themselves or their services in an English speaking country. Even the SLIGHTEST error reveals that they are not native speakers. Like... "47$ only!"

I Hulk. Hulk smash! Good copywriting right? By no means am I an extremely good copywriter however, if you're looking for one, definitely go with one that has proper grammar and can acquire the readers attention within the first sentence. I'm pretty sure by now you've already found one though.
