Am I mad I want to work for nothing?

Here I am starting out in Internet Marketing. I have set my goals and know what I have to do in order to achieve them. However my short time in IM as taught me one important lesson, I know a lot less than I thought.

My short journey so far as really shown that I have many things to learn, on a recent question I asked someone mentioned "split testing" My mind went blank I didn't haver a clue what they meant. This is just one example of my limited knowledge of the bigger picture.

Anyhow I have decided I would like to give 2 hours of my time a day, 5 days a week (except christmas lol) to work for someone who is full time in IM. I don't want anything in return no pay, no coaching none of your products for free etc.

So what can I offer you? after all I am new to IM, well I can answer support emails, post articles or blog posts, research or any of the other mundane jobs that comes with running your business full time. There are also other tasks that I am willing to try such as article writing.

My technical abilities are probably above average but not expert level. I can install and configure scripts etc.

So what is my real motive behind this. Well I am hoping that along the way you will ask me to do tasks that will help me in my own career. It may be that I have to go out and learn new skills and because I am commited to working for you I will be 100% motivated not to let you down.

You see for people new to IM it can be hard to know what skills to learn first. I watched the old film The Karate Kid "Wax On Wax Off" Maybe I won't understand why you ask me to do some tasks but hopefully sometime in the future everything will fall into place.

Obviously my future will involve running my own business one day and I will continue to work on this outside of my commitment to who I work for. But to anyone I work for I will commit myself for a minimum of six months.

Am I mad? The 10 hours I am willing to work would normally be spent, playing games or facebook etc. so I am not giving up a lot.

Well, if you are crazy for this -- there's a lot of interns in the world that are just as nuts. Many places that hire interns who are in or just out of college don't pay - or pay very limited amounts. The intern is paid mostly by being paid in experience and a reference.

Reminds me of the guy in Napoleon Hill's book... I think it was; Charles Barnes who set out to be Edison's business partner. His family said he was nuts, as did everyone else.

When he showed up at Edison's door, Edison asked; "May I help You?"

Barnes responded; "Yessir, I'm here to be your business partner" -looking like a bum.

Edison offered him a job cleaning, sweeping, etc...

Fast forwarding, Edison created a typography machine and priced it high. His sales force all claimed; "There's no way we can sell these at this price!"

Barnes opted to sell them all, and did! -Soon thereafter, he was Edison's #1 sales guy, and some even said he was Edison's partner.

Though I was paraphrasing from memory, the point being, so long as you know what your chief aim is, and are able to achieve that from which you're offering, then I commend your courage, as I am sure your pm box will be full before days end!

    Best Regards,

Getting into the field is easy. I think most of the forums out there are the only source you'd need.

Tho I agree working for someone experienced helps. If you need a hand on anything specific just post here and I'll be glad to help.

      Jay,

You're not mad. This is the most articulate, intelligent, sensitive and reasonable of these "I want to be your unpaid apprentice and try to learn from you" threads I've seen.

I hope it leads somewhere productive and useful for you, because you deserve it.

Just a friendly word of caution: don't select anyone too quickly. Try to make sure that it's going to be a reasonable deal for both sides, and that you really trust the other party concerned. It's easier to see what they get out of it than it is to see your benefit. Make sure that you try to learn only from someone who is genuinely "where you want to be".

And maybe start it off as only a 1-week commitment, and move it along gently a week at a time, so that you can "break it off", if you decide you want to, without causing any ill-will.

SEOLIX: So what do you expect in return? Where is the value for you if you don't want any coaching etc? Learning new things is nice, but wouldn't it be nicer to do them for your OWN projects?

    Cheers,

      Hi Rob

In my short time in IM I have already found that one of my main problems is staying focused and I am sure many others face the same problem. As an example, I can write some articles for myself but when researching it is very easy to get sidetracked.

By doing various tasks for someone else I know I cannot afford to let them down as my reputation will depend on it. Hopefully one thing I will learn is how to stay focused on one task at a time.
