How low is too low when it comes to Google Keyword Tool?

Hi, I have a question about keyword research using Google Adwords Keyword Tool. What are the lowest global monthly searches and local monthly searches that you would consider when researching terms?

What numbers are good?

Generally, searches around 10000 global is good.

My "sweet spot" is over 2500 global monthly searches when searching "exact" match with less than 25000 competition when you google the term without quotes.

I choose not to go lower than 2000 exact searches per month, but I suppose you can go lower.

The answer to this depends heavily on what a conversion is worth to you.

Ive targeted as low as 22 exact searches per month, but that was for a $200 product.

If you're pushing a $7 ebook, then of course, you'll need much much more volume, to make it worth your while.

Ramone, have you had any sales with your 22 searches per month? coz if you did then anything is possible!

        I have.

I typically see anywhere between 2 to 4 sales a month.

Nothing to blow your socks off. But its completely automated.

Anything that less than 5k global monthly search i will ignore.
But you should not only base on local search and competitive as well.
Which bring you high traffic and high conversion rate then i will go with which one .

I'll target all the way down to about 140 searches/month. But I don't do any linkbuilding, so I can target many times more keywords.

Interesting thread - the problem with high ranking keywords is, of course the competition and costs if you are doing ppc. But the point about "depends on your profit margin - small numbers for high ticket items, large numbers for low ticket items - seems to make a lot of sense.

This strategy has always provided very positive results.

      Low search volume keywords usually...

      1. Have much lower competition
      2. Require much less work
      3. Can produce almost immediate returns

Theres nothing wrong with making 4 or 5 sales a month at $200. Especially when you can rank in as litle as 24-48 hours.

    Hi 23sdriver,

It all depends on what you are marketing really and the competition for those keywords or phrases. The more specific the keywords, the less people you will have, but the more targeted the traffic will be. Also when you do a search for your keyword phrase, there will be many more suggestions for you to consider. For a specific keyword phrase, go to the search results and see how many competing pages come up. An excellent range is 50-100,000 competing pages. With good seo tactics it should not be hard to rank on the first page after a week or 2.

I usually do 3k or 5k exact local as a minimum. Sometimes I break my own rules though: I have one site for a product that gets me 2k in commission. Only 140 monthly searches, but hey who cares for commissions at that rate.

Like Ramone said, it's all a numbers game. I'm not going to go after 100 monthly searches for a $5 product but I may for a $200 product. Every situation is different for me.

It depends on what you're selling.

My brother used to profit enormously from just 3 keyphrases that, between them, got under 100 searches a month. The thing was, his product price was as much as €100,000 (which is about US$130,000).

Interesting thread - good to know that you don't always have to go for those super-high-search, super-ultra-competitive keywords!

    Thanks for the tips!

thanks for a great thread. I have always been taught that it should be a keyword that has a high search volume, I think the low search keywords will involve less work and greater returns. Thank you

I normally look for >2k searches per month. As other users said, more searches also means more competition, but if you have very few searches there will only be a few "long tail" searches as well (or you already are in the long tail).

What I did once or twice, when I discovered that for a keyword there are a lot of searches, I narrowed down the niche by picking related keywords (e.g., for more specialized versions of the product). That way, even if there is competition for the main keyword, you can still build a competitive site that caters to a smaller audience that is more interested in the specialized version/product you're offering.

Wow! Thanks for all this good info! If I got this right, than keywords that have a low search volume often have a greater return and they are less work. I'm just trying to understand what you guys mean.

I heard from another marketer not to target anything less than 50k exact global monthly searches. I think he said that because of the traffic you could potentially get if you ranked for such a word. Any thoughts?

Anything above 1000 with a high CPC or profitable product to sell is worth digging in. Other than that above 3000 is for any other niche.

@23sdriver - What you're seeing here is that almost every strategy can work. You just need to match the volume of the keywords with the amount that you're making from the traffic.

For example, I get an enormous amount of traffic every day to my website. Last month I got about 2.5 million search visitors coming to 2 million different keywords. I have no idea which ones I'm ranking for, I'm just targeting them all as comprehensively as I can. But I get very low earnings per click through Adsense - about $.25/click. Other people here are making 10x that amount of money.

You can go the high traffic/low payout route. Or the low traffic/high payout route. Or some hybrid approach in between.

Just get moving. Don't fall into analysis paralysis, waiting for the perfect keyword to come along.

It depends...For secondary or ternary level keywords that I use in combinations with more powerful keywords, 50 queries a month may be my bottom limit, especially if they have little to no competition and decent click value.

I don't suggest using these types of words for domains or as the "main" keywords for a page, but I do like sprinkling in these types of keywords to use in combo with others...Particularly if these keywords are names of products or brands.

No number is too low for me if it's a buyer keyword. I've made close to $1000 a month with a keyword that was getting 140 searches a month according to Google. It was actually getting alot more than Google estimated though (it was a new product to the market and quickly became very popular), and was a very strong buyer keyword. Because the search numbers seemed to be so low I had zero affiliate competition and easily ranked no.1.

I often promote new products that look like they have potential - it's easy to make a killing within the first few months if it's being marketed heavily by the merchant.

It's so easy to rank for keywords within just a handful of searches, and all those rankings add up to alot of traffic. If you can rank no.1 for 100 keywords with just 100 monthly searches each you could quite easily get 5000 visits per month. Most times all it takes is just 1 properly optimized article per keyword and a few backlinks.

It will depend on the product I am offering.

If I had a product that paid me a few thousand dollars for each sale then I could aim as low as 10 people a month. But I agree if you are going to sell $7 ebooks, then you better look for >2000 results.
