Free alternative for Aweber to start building a list?

Hi,
For my blog I want to set up a newsletter system to build a list of subscribers.
I know that Aweber is one of the best, maybe the best solution to do this.
But to start I do not want to pay $19 already.
I first want to build a small list and make some earning and then I want to start using Aweber.
Is there a free solution to start building a list on my Wordpress blog and is it possible to import the subscribers later into Aweber.
Thank you so much for you help.

Kind regards,
Richard

There are some free options such as ListWire. GetResponse and MailChimp are free up to a certain amount of subscribers, though MailChimp does not allow affiliate marketing.

The biggest issue is that Aweber will let you import your list, but they will all have to confirm their subscriptions again which can lead to a huge loss in your list.

I was going to suggest Imnica also - you can get a free account good for up to 1,000 although you should just pay the $3 a month and remove the limitations...

I use Imnica as my main autoreponder with no trouble. (I also use constant contact and aweber and a few others)

That's not even close to being true...

You, as a member of our service, will receive offers from us, List Wire, in exchange for using our service... it's your standard method of list building.

Offer something for free, and in return, we get your email address to send offers. It's just like what you do on a squeeze page, you offer something free, and then you mail those people after they've signed up...

If you can't delete a single email a day from us... taking all of 2 seconds, then you're probably not someone who should be involved in email marketing in the first place. Your use of the word "spam" for 100%, double-optin verified email, is also an indication that email marketing probably isn't for you.

If you call what we send spam, you're one of the reasons why email delivery is difficult for legitimate senders... what we send doesn't even come close to resembling anything near spam.

Moving on to the bigger, and even more disheartening part of your post... and, a part that's even worse than the first part...

As for your subscribers being spammed... that would only be the case if you, the account owner, are sending messages that you yourself consider spam.

List Wire NEVER sends ANY email to your subscribers for any reason, period. We DO NOT, nor have we ever, nor will we ever, sent a single email to any of your subscribers, for any reason, period!

And this is coming from the owner of the service, and a guy who wrote part of the code... I know exactly how it works, and exactly what we do... and we DO NOT send email to YOUR subscribers. You create, compose, and are in complete control of every single email that ever goes to your subscribers, just like any other autoresponder service out there, at any price.

I too explored Wordpress plug-ins but I read enough horror stories to frighten me. I am frugal by nature but, in the end, I decided this was one area of my business where corners could not be cut.

MailChimp is good but, as Amanda pointed out, not if you do affiliate marketing. I began several of my lists with MailChimp. Of course, I eventually realized I was virtually throwing money away by not being able to promote affiliate offers to my lists. BIG mistake.

In the end, I've settled on GetResponse. There is a free trial, and you can remain on the free account until you have more than 100 subscribers.
Create free account ? email marketing - GetResponse
      (Not an affiliate link.)
None of the other services mentioned above are truly free...

Richard, we designed our service specifically for people like you. There's no reason for you to throw money down a hole while you're trying to learn the ins and outs of email marketing.

If you want to move to another provider at a later date, that's perfectly fine... but regardless of what you choose, our service will always be free, and every message you send through List Wire won't cost you a cent.

        Hi

First of all I must state that I have no relationship with Gary, other than as a customer.

Due to financial constraints I originally used MailChimp as my email marketing service. However, once I learned (the hard way) that they shut your account down if you try to use it for Affilliate Marketing, I shopped around for an alternative.

Eventually I settled on trying ListWire on one of my 'secondary' blogs. I used the List Wire service for about five months with no problems at all. My emails got through to my list, and I was definitely not 'spammed' by Gary, as has been suggested.

Yes, there are some refinements Listwire could do with, including easier ways to add opt-ins to Wordpress sidebars, but all in all, I have built up a confidence in the service.

I am now in the process of converting my other sites to use ListWire, and totally support Gary the Aces statements at post No. 15.

        Cheers

        Alan

I confess I was alarmed by the number of emails/offers/upsells when testing Listwire - and read (on this forum) that subscribers were receiving the same emails. Like others, I'd concluded that was "the catch" to your free service - and, again, I apologize for the entirely incorrect conclusion.

It might not have been for me, but you're clearly offering a genuinely free list-building service. Thank you for the explanation which I'm sure will be of much interest to those looking to start their lists.
I'm still not sure what you're referring to in terms of emails/offers/upsells...

When you join the service, we have no one-time-offer, no upsell, no nothing. We're not asking for a penny anywhere on the site... there's literally nothing being sold by List Wire to our members.

When a subscribers joins your list, they're shown a "please confirm your subscription" page that is void of advertising, then they confirm, and they're shown a page with a message indicating they've confirmed, which shows some co-registration options...

These co-registration options are our build-in list building system, which puts leads on to your list, at no cost. Other services charge upwards of $1.00 per new lead generated using this method, we're including it for free... and we've already generated tens of thousands of prospects for our clients this way.

I'd also point out that this is the same type of system that GetResponse uses, the co-reg on the after confirm page, and I've yet to see anyone complain about those ads, even though GetResponse is selling those ads to other people, and cutting you out of the profits completely...

We're making nothing on those, and giving our members the leads...

The only offers we make to our members are one, or sometimes two, emails per day sent to OUR members... meaning, our account holders. It'd take you all of 2 seconds a day, or less, to delete those messages if they're really bothering you...

And the way we see it... if 2 seconds a day isn't worth saving $20 or more a month to you... you probably expect too much for free.

P.S. Thanks for correcting the misinformation... we worked hard to get this service out there, and it kills me a little every time I think that someone might be missing out because they didn't get the full story. So, thanks again.

I think you should go with Aweber. It's worth it. And if you're planning on using it later anyway, you've already learned how to use it and you have your list already there. icontact and mailchimp don't like affiliate marketing or bizop and you don't want to go through the hazzle of setting everything up and then getting your account shut down after 1-2 mailings..

Well Gary, that's a good post - you've got me convinced!

I use Aweber and am happy with them, but I have a number of new sites I am in the process of developing and thought I would use a different autoresponder to see if I am missing on anything etc. I tried Mailchimp and like their set up, but the horror stories on here, and their Ts&Cs mean I shall back away.

I will be checking out you and GetResponse immediately!

I'd suggest a BIG NO on Mailchimp. Free is nice and they offer full service up to a certain number of subscribers, but the crap is so complicated to set up and use...I just...no.

Plus, no affiliate marketing. Even more no. I see a lot of GetResponse out there. Perhaps I'll try that one next.

No matter which autoresponder you use, it is very important to make the right choice in the beginning because it is extremely difficult to switch providers. Some providers offer very cheap price in the beginning but once you get more subscribers, your price will go up substantially. Therefore offers such as free the first month or $1 the first three months don't really matter. What matters is how much you will be paying after you have 5000 or 50000 subscribers.

        Hello,

Have you considered free e-mail lists offered by your web host? I guess it might depend on what the end goal is.

Dada mail for example is usually offered on your server and I thought it was free when I used it.

Originally I started with Awebber, but thought it was more complex than what I wanted and switched to Icontact simply because I met the founder at a Internet Marketing Seminar with Derek Gehl. But Icontact was a headache when I tried to deal with support and they threatened to shut down my list because they didn't fully read my emails and thus got confused. So I dumped them and went with free or cheaper options, I ended up on Dada. Then I decided to get active again and since Wufoo could integrate easily with Mailchimp I swapped to them. I was able to download my list and upload to mailchimp.

All in all you should experiment, but if you plan on paying in the long run, I would try a paid service that offers free to begin with. This way you don't have a big headache down the road.

So far Mailchimp has been great, but I only use it to promote my own products and not pushing it very hard.

Do a quick search on the forums - because MailChimp don't allow affiliate marketing a number of people had their accounts shut for trying it.

No need to jump out of affiliate marketing because of it, just try one the other free suggestions on the list that do. I haven't tried any of them myself (my email list set up is on my todo list for this evening - exciting Friday evenings I have these days!) so no recommendations, but the above posts make interesting reading.

    Hey,

Getresponse.com is free up to 1,000 contacts. An opportunity not to miss, I think. And if you have a few e-mail addresses, you can start multiple accounts there, too!

It is not some cheap or free junk that will cover your newsletter with their own advertising, but a professional paid service. Still free up to 1,000 contacts!

    Hope that helps.
