How Do You Get Your Hands On....

Products to review???. i was thinking of doing a pc hardware review site as a test run but i haven't got any idea how to get stuff sent to me for free.

it seems pretty pointless reviewing something that i haven't really used or touched even though i see many websites doing just that by giving generic/general "reviews".

How do you do it?

Starting a review site isn't easy these days because a lot of people are doing them, personally I would create a broad review site and target individual products that will be easy to rank for.

To start off with unless you have the money to invest in buying the products why not go into any shop and test them out for yourself? Of course this is hard with most things but as far as electricals go it's extremely easy. I also have tested various bikes from halfords "I own a bike review website" and I just went in there one day and said "I am doing a bike review site, Can i test a few bikes out in the carpark and in return I will link to your website and say how coperative you were" the manager was more than happy and It meant i could get videos of myself testing out the bikes which in return made my website a lot more appealing as people could watch the bikes in action rather than just reading some writing.

Edit: incase you didn't get the hint trying using videos for reviews they convert a lot higher and you can get extreme traffic from the likes of youtube

I'm with you. I wouldn't review or even promote something I haven't used or have personal experience with. However, I know a lot of people put up review sites and use other people's reviews. You could do that.

However, I agree that this area is saturated. You might have to go really specific and do a micro niche.

I would not go broad on this, instead very narrow...but deep. Find a niche you like, and you know there's evidence people pay for products in the niche. Then only review those products on your site. Real reviews, not pretend 'made-up' ones.

Present yourself as a SPECIALIST and hopefully, over time you will gain some authority as well.

      Very good advice Bruce.
I second going "narrow" as bruce says, there are a ton of sub niches in the "PC Hardware" niche.
Remember you are going up against well established sites like Tom's Hardware, Notebookcheck, laptopmag, pcmag etc.
Find a sub niche you like eg: Custom rigs, Gaming rigs, Overclocking, GPU's...

As far as getting Suppliers to send you hardware to review, i don't know about that. You would have to establish yourself as an expert first with a decent following that's my guess.
Also if you can attend shows/conventions/launches, network and get yourself known, Here in the USA the anual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is excellent, iv'e been to the last 2.

      Cheers

Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.
