How to monetize 3000 unique visitors a month?

Hey warriors,
Here I have this nice looking PR 1 site: Unusual Pets | A Piece Of Nature In Your Hand along with the accompanying FB page with over 700 fans.

The site is completely unique, all articles are written by me or a hired writer and I have a few guest posts.

The interesting thing about this site is that it's almost one year old, and has made exactly 0$ by now. I don't want to put up adsense, cause they (google) are constantly banning my accounts (don't know why).

I have put up some related amazon products up on single posts and pages, there are some Linkshare banners, and a CPA offer above the Facebook widget. Zero conversion and zero earnings. Maybe just a few amazon things, now and there for $1 commissions.

The site gets approx 3000 unique visitor a month, all from organic Google search.
Another question: if I was to sell the site on Flippa, how much is the traffic worth, since the site is not making any money? I mean, how much would you pay for a site that gets 3000 uniques a month?

Thanks to all suggestions.

Have you considered making a list, offering them a free book to opt in along and sending them regular newsletters, tips and unusual pet stories weekly? You know 3000 is a very decent traffic and can very well be earning you more than a 1000$ a month. I have seen a very good dog training product along with good killer sales letter and video (which demonstrates the techniques he used to get his dog to follow his command obediently). Promote affiliate product on your list, based on your niche, considering your niche is on pet so, yeah! Find one based on pets, I have seen a lot of good ones.

    Good luck!

Your story might be a shock of reality to some who have only seen over optimistic pictures some courses paint.

The amount of banners combined with the opt-in form 'feels' a bit overwhelming, thinning out some unproductive ads might improve the stick time, and might help the site grow more quickly in popularity. One of the Adsense qualifications is: the original useful content has to exceed the screen area occupied by ads, headers and menus are not considered useful space.

I recall Perry Belchur talking about the smell of mature sugar gliders, supposedly there's a 'secret' diet solution owners would love to know about.

Ok, I'll try to reduce the banners on the home page, thanks for the tip.

There is an opt in form, it was previously on the top of the right sidebar, but since nobody subscribed I just put it down, so it's still there, with 8 subscribers

Didn't try with promoting clickbank products, my main focus was amazon, but no real success. This is just to let everybody know, even a good site with unique content, and decent traffic is not enough to make money online.

What did you do with these 8 subscribers? Did yu send them a newsletter?
I sent my first newsletter when I only had 5 subscribers. The next I sent out when I had 17. Things start to multiply when you take actions and also stick to what you have promised (providing your subscribers with news about your niche).

When you get 3,000 subscribers /month, check out which keywords they are using and how long they stay on the site. how many pages do tehy look at? Use this information and create content or change existing content based on these findings.

3000 visitors / month is not much. You will not earn anything at at all with these figures. You will have to increase traffic substantially before you even think of earning profit form your website.

not true. I own another site that earns 50-100$/month on a regular basis with only about 500 uniques a month, selling shoes

Looks like a great site to me. Very professional banner and ebook cover - I'm surprised you're not making money with it. One thing I've noticed some marketers have success with is putting a horizontal banner optin at the bottom of every post. Or you could try adding an amazon banner somwhere in each post or at the bottom.

Hope you can make it work.

This is something I'm having problems with myself. I've got a site getting around
2000 uniques per month. The site makes the odd sale here and there for and gets some adsense revenue here too. (although it's cents and not dollars)

Like yours it's a PR1 but for the traffic coming in I'm surprised that the revenue isn't anywhere near where I expected to be.

Sign up box is on the site too and no subscribers. Had 2 who only signed up, got the freebie and unsubscribed. Thinking it's maybe the niche itself.

      Done now though.

The only thing I can think of doing is keep adding to the site and continue the SEO and try and increase the page rank for it. Maybe others in the same niche would be worth approaching to try and sell privately for the PR of the site rather than the revenue.

Just noticed the bit to subscribe to the thread. Still new around here. Be interesting to see how the replies pan out.

This one's interesting. I get sales on a site with about 100 uniques, yet with a couple of thousand monthly hits on another, there's little happening.

It depends on the traffic coming to a site and what people are looking for. With the right people arriving, you can make money with the right product.

I agree. I got 5000 uniques just yesterday alone and I think I made about 5 cents on adsense from it...

First of all I like your site it looks great however I can see why monetizing it is proving difficuilt. The problem is that usually this sort of niche is filled with people "just browsing" however you could always sell text ads on your site it won't bring you in much but it's better than earning nothing.

Have you tried actual animal products with amazon? Or try and find a cool dvd on nature and promote that. Basically with your kind of website you need to think way outside the box.

    Good luck with it!

Regarding flippa, you would definitely get a decent amount because someone else might have the idea to monetize it that you don't have.

Build a list. Offer something for free to your visitors that is something they would really want and find valuable.

Some of my nieces have exotic pets and it seems they are always buying things online or at stores for them.

I would write articles about those items and include links behind keywords in the body of those articles for selling things.

Maybe you should put out a product as unique as your site. Or you can always host a give away or contest that will encourage activity amongst your visitors and make subscribing a mandatory entry. You might be able to build your list more then...

Thank you all for your suggestions. I will try to reduce the amount of banners and try some info products instead of Amazon.

It's just strange that I didn't bother much with the site, it has only about 30 backlinks, and there has been no promotion at all. Just adding unique content over a few months got me 3000 uniques a month only from Google search.

And now I see the PR updated to 2.

Something must be very wrong with this site in terms of making money

Pretty strange. I think that if you add related affiliate programs like for example bird or cat training, you should see some sales coming in.

Plus you can start building a list and ask your list what they want, create a couple of videos, or a report, and sell it to your subscribers.

Recap: Build a list, and ask them what they want. Don't make this complicated.

    "lonicera":

To answer your question "how much your site is worth," it's a simple answer. It's how much the market WILL PAY for it. And the only way to find that out, is post it for sale. What you or I think it's worth does NOT matter.

As far as turning your visitors into money, it all depends what keywords they are finding your site with. Ask yourself, "where are they in the buying cycle?" when they enter that keyword. Then you must MEET THEM THERE and give them what they want.

Is it just information about where to find an unusual an animal? Is it the risks of owning an unusual animal? Will they pay for that information? Not if it's not a "dying" problem. Usually, in the research stage, they are still surfing for information and not ready to buy anything.

This is where you have to know who you are trying to target and what makes them "tick."

    Hope that helps.

If you want your visitors to buy from you then you have to show them what's in it for them. Market, market, market...that means restructuring your entire site, if necessary, based on what will sell. Some keywords that can be used as filters, words that will tend to attract those who are in the "ready-to-buy" stage, are "review" (as in product), "buy," "purchase," "free shipping" etc. Why not play around with these words and see what happens?

You should reinvent yourself in your niche. Drive to a squeeze page, build up that list, pitch a product, call it a day, then repeat... preferably with paid advertising, cause it's fast.
