Okay, I need to get some sort of Help Desk Software. Any recommendations on what to go for?

Good question. I'd like to know, too. Also, is there a help desk service available that you can access, rather than having the actual software?

I use Willie Crawford's Three Pillars Helpdesk which is available at threepillarshelpdesk.com. It is very easy to use to set up and use.

I am using Crafty Syntax – Crafty Syntax Live Help an Open Source Live Support. It is for free. A friend of mine recommended it and he is very happy with it. He had been using it for years now. I just tried it months ago and so far so good. I have no complaints yet. It’s easy to install and easy to use.

It is just amazing that one can get a help desk for free. Enterprise level companies pay millions for a help desk, plus staff, plus a yearly fee. Of course we are talking more CRM systems that keep track of all the customer info.

            IE: Some real life numbers:

            $5 million for software licenses
$10 million to customize and impliment and transfer data
$900,000 a year for support contract
12 staff making $100,000 a year each or more.

Well, just goes to show that because one guy gives something away doesn't mean you can't charge money for it.

              Is the paid one better?

Do they have a better USP?

Did they just feel like charging instead of giving it away?

Is it because of the perceived value of the higher price?

I can't say in this case because I haven't used any of them. Just some things to keep in mind when doing your marketing. You don't have to work for free.

      Sylvia,

Why pay a high price to others when a simple, effective software solution will do it for you, and it doesn't even need to be paid minimum wage!

      Just wondering?

      Kindest regards,

I have used a lot of the paid ones (Kayako, etc) but since downloading and trying the free, open source version of osTicket, I haven't looked back:

        Hi Janet,

No real good reason, except that setting up software on a server isn't always as easy as I expect and usually takes me a heck of a lot longer than patience allows. Sometimes, it just seems easier and quicker to just get access to an online service.

I do agree that it makes more sense to get the software for one price which, oddly enough, is my usual preference over using monthly paid services.

It's always good to see the options, too.

Well, I rather like ThreePillarsHelpDesk myself. I tried it about
16 months ago,and like it so much that I did a Victor Kiam, and
    bought the company :-)

I have seen several companies offering manned helpdesk. One
that comes to mind is out of the Philippines, and uses Three
Pillars as their platform. If you want their contact info just
let me know and I'll track it down.
