I Lost 80 lbs. (so far). How would you monetize me?

I have no experience in the diet niche. If I were your brother or sister, how would you monetize my story/knowledge? (I do have dramatic before/after pictures)

I can't say my diet is some new super-food or new philosophy or something. I've read most of the best diet books and created my own basics to follow.

I did come up with my own system of "sticking to the diet" using things I learned and experimented with in the areas of motivation and other tricks. (I just don't know if information like this sells).

I am a very low activity person. I work at a computer many hours a day, and didn't work out while I lost the weight.

How hard is it for me to capitalize on this? For those who are veterans of the diet niche, what are my options?

Thanks to anyone who wants to offer advice/insight.

Well I think you should write an ebook and start a blog.

Maybe create some work out videos.

Sell the system you used. So many diets are rehashes so don't worry. Just explain what worked for you and teach your readers how to do it.

Hopefully you will get a following that will make you more money.

Same for me, although I'd say, put up the blog first, and start writing your story in a series of post.

While your blog is getting more traffic, make sure to build your list, and start asking your readers what they want to see in your product. Then, sell them.

Make sure to participate (blog comments, blog posting) on other big fitness/weight loss blogs in your niche.

You are onto something here, and believe me, if you are serious, you can make a killing in this market with the right JV partners.

      Regards,
      Franck

I would make a product. Put it on Clickbank. And then recruit affiliates to promote it and find people with big weight loss email lists and do a webinar with them at the end of which you can sell your product.

I would think LONG and HARD before trying to sell some ebook.

There will be a lot involved if you want to go into that niche in that way.

You will want some kind of verification from a certified health care professional, and even some Doctor documentation on what you are doing and if it is a sustainable and "smart " way to lose weight.

Prepare to invest heavily if you are going to sell your "plan."

You have to consider, you are offering advice on peoples bodies and their lives. It's not like money that can be replaced. If something you suggest disturbs someones body in a negative way, they will come after you for the explanation and the fix.

It is a much bigger responsibility than most realize.

I agree - make your own product. Lay out the diet that you used to lose your weight and any exercise program you used. You said your created your own system of sticking to the diet - and this is often the hardest part - so outline your system and use that as your big selling point.

Use your before and after shots and any other shots you have taken along the way.
Start a blog and write, write, write about your journey. Write lots about your experiences along the journey to lose weight. Give them your before and after pics and really try to connect with your audience. Encourage people to comment on your blog and get involved with conversations with your readers through the comments.
Sell your book on your blog and also on Clickbank. Try to find affiliates to sell your product for you. If you have a good, solid weight loss method AND a method for helping people stick to their diet, then you have a good product. It's just a matter of putting that product together and then promote the hell out of it.

You could even get someone to interview you and put the interview on your blog.
I have personally found the problem with most diets is they have some factor that makes it hard to stick to - e.g. the Dukan Diet - great diet except for the oatmeal intake that is required daily - YUK! I found it incredibly difficult to stick to that diet because I can't stomach oatmeal. That's just one example, other diets have such a strict time for eating and strict meals that they can be hard to stick to.
If you have made it easy to stick to a diet, then you are already one step ahead of the others.
    Good luck!

I'd set up a blog that chronicles your journey to weight loss, get a lot of followers by sharing your story on facebook, twitter, youtube, all the social media sites, then focus on driving traffic to your blog where you can offer free short reports or free guides on how to achieve weight loss...once you've gotten a big following you can begin to promote diet and weight loss products...also it's good to build a list. Especially for a popular niche like the weight loss/diet niche, people are always looking for the next best system, program, or pill. Good luck...

Create a diet. Brand it. Try to make it simple yet advanced so people think they are in on something good. Create a website, market yourself extremley on forums. Get alot of respect on forums and such in your niche. People will then go to your site where you can sell an ebook, or just have dieting tips or whatever. JUST REMEMBER TO PROMOTE THE HELL OUT OF YOURSELF.

Pm me if you want my help. I would be happy to help.

        Hi Michael

I would get someone well versed in the weight loss niche to interview you.

I would create a video or audio of the interview.

And add a writtem report of the Interview which will include other great points about how you did it.

Sell the two together and include some of your meal recipes of course.

Hm, that is exactly what I do in the weight loss and diet sites I run such as Beat That Fat and Start Losing Weight Now: Weight Loss Tips and Advice so let me know when I can talk to you about this (maybe on skype) and interview you and we can kick this whole thing off.

First of all, congrats to you for getting off 80 pounds - that is no small feat.

I agree that starting a blog diarizing your experience is the place to start: What kinds of foods? The timing? Is there a fitness plan? how did you feel? Your successes and bummers. And yes, we want to see photos of before, during and final.

While blogging your writing skills will blossom and an ebook/plan can come from that.

Use twitter, FB or Google + and start a social following too. Folks like me like to follow others who have done or are doing what we hope to do. Thsi way you can get to know what your readers want. Paying attention to their questions, you can learn their needs and potentially create an amazing plan.

Yes, all this will take time but believe me within a year, you'll have a nice little following and a growing community.

    All the best,

As they have said above post, make an ebook and you should review your own weight loss breakthrough then make a blog about this topic and give or sell the ebook or maybe put a cpa content locker before they get the ebook so everybody benefits with it.

Not to knock a product or service but prove to yourself that it works on others.
Get there testimonial in writing and video.

Understand that you must use several methods to get it out there and not just one way.

Faster Way/No knowledge of marketing/Not much to invest:
Sell it on clickbank and allow affiliate marketing. There is an art to affiliate marketing with the right person doing it. Only 1% are in this catagory for many reasons.
Goto FIVERR web site and have some to setup a WordPress andTwitter to order your product with a paypal account. Goto Amazon to write a review about a diet solution and how you talk about that subject in your ebook at the WordPress articles link. Then they see your ebook and like it then order it.
Use the list of those that already have one. In example diet magazines. Put your ad in the back and put a link to your WP.
Locally offer group sessions and again one time offers.
Join groups and forums even if you can't put an ad on it like Google+ (who is thinking of not allowing ads). You will be creating, responding, answering many posts then later send them to your WP link.

      Slower and more work:
Find companies that are trying to get there employees healthier / promotions etc. The company may buy a good portion of the ebook on cd copies, then give it to there employees for free as a bonus to there main product.

Since no one knows who you are and the world has been scammed by those who think they really are experts in diets, real estate and marketing, making it bad for others. It will be a struggle and alot of rough work.

Just my personal experience or opinion in the beginning with not much money to invest, I stayed away from PayPerClick Related pages. That includes FaceBook Ads, GMail Ads, Adwords, Adsense. This will only work for the few who are already doing this especially if your creating a list. Why if you have a great ad but a video that lags on for 30 minutes and you lose the customer, that was lost money cause you didn't know where your sticking points were.

This ebook that I'm refering to is if you lost everything and had to start form scratch. Google "30 Days To YOUR Internet Marketing Success" and download the sample pdf. Or search google for "sample30days.pdf" The info what I gave you is slightly more up to date. To be clear I'm not an affiliate of this book. It's just a good reference in my opinion.

As you can tell your not going to do this blindly or alone.

Congrats on losing the weight, Congrats on wanting to start a business, Congrats wanting to help others.

      • I'm really sorry, Michael, but your story doesn't inspire me. It scares me.

No exercise? That means part of those 80 lbs lost was muscle. Most people I know don't have enough muscle to begin with. They get debilitating back pain, have poor posture, have balance problems...

          Hey Michael,

          First off, congrats!

It's not easy to lose all that weight.

As far as monetizing your experience, you could potentially create a blog.

          With a twist, however...

I agree with a lot of the folks here that you don't have certifications to be dishing out diet or fitness advice to people. To sell you own book that way would be disingenuous.

What piques my interest about what you said, is how you were able to "stick" to the diet.

I think you could easy write a book on the MINDSET of losing weight. It can take a self-help approach.

Write about the techniques you used to stay on track and be consistent day in and day out.

There are plenty of diet books out there already. The problem isn't the diets. It's that most people can't follow them for any length of time (maintaining that weight loss is a whole other story).

So I think there would be a lot of value in creating a product that teaches folks how to be their own best ally in the battle against the bulge.

I'm seeing some dangerous advice here.

If you do not have medical certifications, licenses, etc - you are going to get your butt into some royally hot water if you "write a diet plan" etc. You don't have what's legally required to do so.

I cured my dog of cancer. The fact he had cancer can be confirmed - the fact that the tumor is gone and he's alive and healthy can be confirmed --- but I don't have a doctor's license and it would be illegal as heck for me to claim to have a "cure" for cancer or to prescribe treatment.

If you write a product -- YOU HAVE to use a very loud disclaimer that the report/book is for informational purposes only and not meant to diagnose or to prescribe treatment for any condition. My results might not be the same as others experience........yadda yadda......

Also remember that what worked for you might not work for someone else. What if they are exposed to a toxin that makes them retain fat that you weren't exposed to? Your "diet" would not work for them in this instance. You would open yourself up to lawsuit telling them that you have a working diet. What if your diet is deficient in a mineral that someone else needs elevated levels of and it kills them? Lawsuit, possible criminal charges.

Write the product as your own story: This is what I did and how I did it and what happened. There is not one thing illegal about telling your own story. If someone follows the exact thing you did because they are reading your story - that's up to them, it's no fault of your own if they do exactly what you did and it doesn't work for them. You never told them it would.

I don't know about writing a diet plan, but you defianetly can't tell someone what food to eat.

I like Heysal's idea about writing what worked for you + you could probably word it so it's more like a diet plan without ramming lactose down an intolerant persons face.

Touching on the other thing Heysal mentioned about the diet not working for other people, give your diet to a few people (maybe one guy, one girl) and record process.

TBH, you're probably gonna have to push your "story", otherwise it just sounds like some overweight person who's lost weight, especially considering you don't have a training plan to go with it or no "angle" on the diet.

Maybe you can create an angle. What was a mainstay of your diet? If it was smoked salmon on toast, you could call it the "smoked salmon on toast diet." See, you now have a story and an angle, rather than an overweight person who ate less, cause lets face it - to lose weight, just eat less.

    Good luck

    Hi Michael,

I was thinking along the same line, on how to monetize a self-made weight loss program. Was about 112kg a year ago. Now 83kg. That is 29kg lost. Standing at 5ft 9in, it's not bad.

For weight loss, I'm using kitchen herbs, simple stretching exercises (taken from ancient techniques) and walk. I totally hate running and jogging. I enjoy food as anyone else and there's no strict diet .... but feel healthier than ever.

If you're using pharmaceuticals and "strange" formulas in addition to the dietary plans, the authorities will take notice of you. They have hawkeyes. Also standby for class action law suits. Please read again post no.22 by HeySal.

If you're using kitchen herbs, self-made diet recipes from everyday ingredients and simple exercises, I think it'll be safe to promote.

Try visiting naturopathy web sites to see how they promote weight-loss products. Better still, try to work out a JV with them. Get them to write good words and validate your program. They are more or less "authority" figures in this niche. Furthermore, they have thousands of loyal visitors for you to leverage. So, the cost of promotions could be very much less.

    Sell the money !!

Dont be a seller of a diet product or system, be a provider of a money making system for others to sell a diet product or system !!

There are lots of people looking to make money online, they just cant create a product, do it for them showing the simple system of how you changed your habits and your life and how you stuck to it, then sell it with rights to people who want to go and make money in the health niche or who are already in the health niche.

So you provide them with the picks and the shovels to go out and find the gold !!

I work in th medical field and we deal with this issue every day and I can absolutely assure you that you can completely disconsider the legal ramifications.

Furthermore and to use another anology: In the UK a bar owner can be sued for damages caused by a drunk person laving thei bar. Does that mean every bar in the UK has closed down? NO of course not...measured risk.

A disclaimer is of course needed as always.
I was involved in a little lawsuit around a diet fraud.
Our lawyer advised us not to join the class suit if we wanted to go after damages such as medical issues arising from use of the diet.

I don't know who may have a case going, so I can't give you details.

What I can tell you is the fact that the person who created the diet had no medical or nutritional background and that no doctor would testify for it did have an effect toward us winning our lawsuit.

While the user of the diet bares the burden of providing proof that it is a specific diet causing them damage, it is a very uncaring and unresponsible human who would toss any diet advice out there without having some testing done first to the overall safety of a program.

What people tend to forget - as mentioned above is that weight loss with no exercise results in muscle loss. The heart is a very important muscle in the body.

Anyway, you can get sued for writing a diet that gives wrongful advice - as my lawyer had stated.

It would us both unhappy. Consult a Doctor before doing anything in this book". And he goes into some extremely controversial weight loss techniques.

You can sued for anything these days...this is not a reason not to write a book on weight loss (a responsible book naturally..i totally agree if its a non sense book with false and dangerous claims).

Look at the Lemonade Diet for heavens sake?? That is DANGEROUS and has anyone ever been sued over that.

Yes - I see you mention the disclaimer that was in the book. A disclaimer can make the difference between home free and jail time. Do you remember the Atkins diet? That was accepted for a long, long time before exploding into shrapnel.

I have no clue who YOU are, either. You say "not a problem" but there are legalities and he better know what they are because if you cross the legal line in the health industry -- someone will get you. Don't forget that the FTC LOVES this niche. If you do it right, you can skate even if people kill themselves - do it wrong and you can get in deep crap even if what you are writing is the miracle of the century.

Jill will have to verify this one -- but I believe that the problem that was going on with the suit that she was in was false advertising -- an FTC issue. I very well could be wrong on that one.
