Newbie with a PR question

I have a question on SEO, my site just got a PR 2 from google a few days ago, my aim was to beat the number 1 site with my keywords. I was hoping to get a PR3 to beat the number 1 site with PR2 as that didn't happen, I'm stuck with a PR2, the same pagerank as the number 1 site, my question is: If I get more backlinks than the number 1 site, will I replace the number 1 site, becoming number 1 (because we have the same pagerank)? Or do I have to wait for the next google pagerank update to beat the number 1 site with a PR3?

Thank you so much for replying, I'm new at SEO and feel pretty lost at the moment.

Page rank depends on more than backlinks. You need to add pages as well as backlinks and link internally too.

There is toolbar page rank which Google updates on no fixed schedule and actual page rank which happens dynamically. So no you would not have to wait for the next PR update.

Have you looked at Google's webmaster tools for ranking?

      Hi Sandy,

Thanks so much for the reply, yes, I have been using google webmaster tools, but have noticed that the backlinks that are indexed don't list all of my BLs.

For example on the SeoCentro site, my site has 3000 BLs and according to google WM, I only have 120 BLs. SeoCentro has been pretty spot on with my BLs and usually lists the same amount of BLs that google WM does but I just started using an automated backlinking software and SeoCentro is the first one to index my BLs from my automated software. So, right now, I'm hoping google and google WM will index those 3000 BLs and up my site on google SE.

Maybe. Although, theoretically, it makes sense that a higher PR would beat a lower PR -- the answer is still maybe.

There are many other factors to consider for page rank, such as internal link structure, site's age, backlink link text variety, link reputation... and the list goes on.

Do a quick check for the target site's Title tags, keyword density, backlinks, etc. Then aim to modify those attributes on your site to be slightly higher than your competitor .

Await results. If no change, then aim to modify those attributes on your site to be slightly lower than your competitor.

Await results. If no change, then aim to match your competitor for those attributes.

One of these formulas will work.

In the meantime, keep building backlinks to your stie using articles, social-bookmarking, and the whatever other SEO tactic works for you.

    You'll get em!

    Best,
    - Jay

P.S. Article marketing works. I have a site that's PR2 that is kicking the pants out of a PR4 site. I'm #1 for my money keyword. How did I do that? Easy. I wrote a few articles. Had them re-written. Then I distributed them to blogs.
