Which one would be better hosting company; MediaTemple or Rackspace?

I've been wondering that which one of these would be better option for an upcoming site that needs reliable hosting also for bigger traffic spikes and growth. I found some negative reviews about mediatemple but none about rackspace, other than that they're expensive. Which they are.
Do you guys have experiences about these two hosting companies?
I understood that at least rackspace is different from hosting companies like bluehost etc for what comes to their ability to serve a growing website. But I'm not sure about mediatemple and their technology. I read some negative reviews about their grid service which would be the "beginner's" choice.
But I guess that even if I want to get started with mediatemple or something similar to save a little on the monthly costs, I can always switch to Rackspace and their cloudservice (or whatever it was called) later when it's needed, without huge problems in the process? Is it difficult to switch from one host to another once you have a website with lots of contents and features? That's the thing I'm little scared of.
