After several years of not really wanting to go down the route of list building.... I have come around to the idea that really that's the way to go.
I have a lot of niche sites and a large number of them are in a hobby related area. I get earnings from adsense and a particular clickbank vendor. On site conversions are nice, but I've found that when a list message goes out, I tend to see a boost not only in main site traffic, but visits to the "this message sponsored by" offer.

I try not to hit people over the head with it and tell them I'm mailing them today with this special offer from blah blah blah. I just give them the niche/site related information and remind them that the site and mailing list is sponsored in part by blah blah blah.

I've made a couple hundred within a day or two of sending out to a relatively small list.

This lesson has had me looking into lists from all my sites. I think the trick with a list, just like with any social feed (twitter/facebook) is the right balance of push/pull. If you're always telling them about a great new product that you're promoting, I just don't think it will work well longterm. Others may be able to chime in about finding that proper balance.

On a related thought I've also come to think of building a business as building relationships and that's what you can do with your list.

Let's see... at the time I started using the list I was getting maybe 50-125 a week from the sites. At the time I only had maybe 200-300 subscribers. Sent out a mailing and over two days saw around $200 spike in sales and then gradually returned to the usual pace.

The $ increase and traffic increase both vary wildly. I've also had mailings that really didn't yield an increase sales at all but I do know there is power in list marketing. Most of the time I will see a boost. I think one of the tricks is finding the right way to balance your information and your offers.

      Provide Value!

Personally, I still have a lot to learn about using lists. From what I can tell $200 in sales from a mailing is pocket change compared to some.

      Hope that helps,

      Avery

    I believe it's over-hyped, but that doesn't mean it's not working.

Basically you can have a well converting website/product without building any kind of a list (I've done it many times over the years), although for certain topics building relationships with your customers could be beneficial (i.e., to do backend sales).

I disagree. Without a list, whenever someone visits your website, you have just one opportunity to sell them. When they click away, they are gone. Period.

Offer them a great freebie in exchange for their contact information and you will then have an opportunity to build a long-term relationship with them, and, when approached properly, market to them for a long time.

i would say there is no right or wrong method.

there are 1001 ways to do internet marketing.

its which one suits u and how u do it.

example : i may do a ppc campaign to drive traffic to my site and i focus on my selling point of my site, those are quality traffic i target them very specifically, so once they land on my page and opt into my list they are valuable members of my list.

As oppose to lets say someone else who did a freebee giveaway and promotes his site in a way which focuses more on the free stuff to get people's attention , where people sign up into his list for a free gift. then those people are freeloaders and thus the quality of the list is lower.

so in the end when u market something to them and try to sell them something later, the conversion rate might to be good enough to cover the ppc campaign.

but if u advertise well and target properly then u are attracting the right people and thus conversion rates with ur email marketing later will pay off ur ppc campaign. then it will be a success.

so email marketing itself like getting a list does not guarantee u success, its just one of the many ways.

    ITS HOW U DO IT!

I recommend building your list if you want to have a long term income.
As with other things, it's not the size that matters but the relationship you have with your list.

Often you'll get better results by mailing an offer to a small targeted list once in a while than to spam a huge list every day with 'special' offers.

I do both list-building and SEO.

I was one of those people who help off list-building for a very long time - until I was kind of "forced" to due to the nature of a website. It was in a niche where adsense/physical product payouts were low, but there were digital products. But conversions on digital products go way up if you've got a list.

If I had to do it all over again... I'd probably go with list-building, starting off by creating a buyers' list. But then again, I have more experience now.

SEO is in some ways more newbie-friendly, but you seem to know the ropes, so I think you can handle list marketing. If you're strapped for cash I recommend Imnica mail, they're the cheapest AR service around and the owner is a real stand-up guy and Warrior who takes care of his customers.

I agree with what everyone else has said here about how much you earn not depending on the size of your list, but on your relationship with them. Always focus on providing value, and giving them a good reason to read your emails. (But never offer freebies!)

List-Building is not over-hyped at all when done correctly.

Most people think all they have to do is getting hundreds if not thousands of emails
and their names and just freakin' promote dozens of stuff to them and expect to make
    millions of money.

    Well, that is not true

There are lots of things to be done in list building like: Targeting the right crowd, nurturing them, making them your fans and make them trust you.

These things are what REALLY matters, and if you are going to build your list in the right away then go ahead, but if you think that you are going to get some people's random emails and names then you email them your offers and expect to make lots of money from that, then keep dreaming.
