Dissecting an Amazon affiliate site: Calling all Amazon affiliates - let's brainstorm!

Hi fellow warriors!

I'm not sure if I posted this in the appropriate place, but I would really like your input in this matter.

I have been into building niche sites monetized primarily by Amazon. When I was doing my keyword research, I came across this particular site:

Best Folding Treadmills Store

(Warning: There's this annoying chat pop-up offering an accident insurance claim or something, just click "X")

At first glance, when I looked at his homepage, it's just like a regular affiliate site monetized heavily by AdSense. Now, when I clicked one of the products, it actually directed me to their online shop.

BUT, when I hover over the "Buy" button, it directs to Amazon. Not only that, the prices are up-to-date, so whatever price I see in their website is actually Amazon's current price! Cool

So, I'm wondering, is there a plug-in or something that can do that? It looks really neat, and gives you the appearance of being an online store. I've read somewhere that this type of affiliate site converts really well, although I don't have any experience at all with it, so I can't say for certain.

When you click on the PRODUCT NAME, it directs you to a separate page detailing all info and PRODUCT FEATURES. Then, there's that "Buy" button again directing to Amazon.

On the sidebar, you can actually search the site based on "Price", where you can specify your budget. A really cool feature!!

The site also have an "Articles" section, but the links in them directs to other websites, sort of like micro niche sites. I'm thinking, the webmaster must've linked his/her other money sites.

Looking at the "Auctions" section, they have live auctions (from eBay). How do they make that? Also, when you click on the "price" sidebar, it allows you to search within the auctions.

So I reckon, "auctions" must be for eBay whilst the "shop" is for Amazon.

All in all, this is one great site (an authority site, with the amount of content - articles, images, videos) except for that annoying chat script, and misplaced AdSense ads (in my opinion, anyway).

I'd love to hear your thought, comments, and feedback about this site!

I've only recently ventured into Amazon affiliate marketing (started early October) but I've got 3 sites product-focused sites, and I haven't really started building authority sites yet. But I've been learning from several Amazon courses and implementing their strategies (on my days off, considering I have a full-time job), and we can both learn from each other!

Anyone who can tell me how to this site set-up (online-store-like Amazon affiliate site) would get my deepest gratitude!

It doesn't look like a great site to me. It looks almost like a cookie clutter site with a lot of products just having a short description and list of features for each product. Where they have put any amount of content, it's just a wall of text with no affiliate links in. It's a mess really.

The search engines aren't going give this type of site a good ranking. You a need a site which posts useful information, ideally about 600-800 words per product to get traffic from the search engines.

They are probably using an Amazon plugin which gets the pricing information. You can get widgets from Amazon which display the latest price though, so you don't need to use a plugin to display this info.

      Hi gie grace,

I agree with cooler 1 regarding the overall problems with the site. When you build an affiliate site, you can get an initial hit and a few sales with a "thin" site that has little content and a lot of obvious ads.

But for the long haul, you need to add a LOT of useful content and your goal should be to help people solve a problem, often the problem of not having enough information in one place.

The current pricing is probably being pulled in through the Amazon API. That is one of many things it provides.

The best plugin that I have found for Amazon sites is the one for which I am building a site in my sig. It is Ryan Stevenson's AMZPS Product Style plugin. Ryan is a fellow Warrior by the way.

You can take a look around there and then go to Ryan's site directly, if you want to.

I am sending you a pm with a link to a site that is an example of a "deep" content site.

I took a look at your site - my main issue with it is that you're overloading your visitors with walls of text.

Basically people are lazy... when they see huge blocks of text like you have on your site, the immediately lose interest.

Lately, since everyone seems to be following a similar format for reviews, I've been switching things up by focusing my effort into making the site more user generated. Less content by the "editor", more content by users.

This is where I think the future in product review affiliate sites is going.

Considering that is the articles and reviews on Amazon affiliate sites - from my personal experience anyway - are the sections of the sites that get the most traffic from SEO reasons, I can't say that this site is particularly optimized for sales.

The article pages and the "review" pages are very thin on affiliate links - if they even have any at all.

I think that the site is fairly "thin" on content and that the store style design has a very low conversion rate.

In my experience, in making Amazon review sites, a well-written review with affiliate links in the text and also in images is all that you need.

Linking directly to Amazon from the "store" isn't making the best use of site. I think that if people search Google for info about a certain product, they're already interested and you just need to give the info that they need to push them to be buyers.

I agree, it's not that I think that the site is great over-all. What I liked about the site was its store-like appearance in its "shop" giving visitors an impression of being in an online store. Now I don't have any experience with this personally (I've been doing reviews over 800 words with in content links and clickable images) so I can't say for certain but someone said that an online-shop tends to convert well (and I'd like to test that theory).

Thanks for your input Dan. But it isn't my own site. It's one site I found when I was doing keyword research for a niche I want to enter.

About that content being more user generated, how do we go about doing that? Is there a plug-in for drawing customer reviews?

I've been doing the same things you did - lengthy reviews with affiliate links.

Now this particular site doesn't have any aff links in their articles BUT they're linking to other affiliate sites sort of like to have some link juice.

I'm thinking if I combine the store-like front with a really lengthy reviews (aff links in text and images), I'll have the bet of both worlds. Of course, I won't load it with Adsense like what this example site did and I'll have to organize it better to be more user-friendly.

I agree with cooler1. The site isn't anything spectacular. It looks like they are using something like Amaniche with some customization.

Unless the site owner is using his own articles, it appears he is stealing articles from EZA as well.

      Hi gie grace,

My information is that this kind of site will not last long in Google rankings. It is quite obviously a 'thin' affiliate site and G. does not like these. There is no obvious content and nothing of value to someone who is genuinely looking for information on this topic.

If you want to create an Amazon affiliate site then that's OK, but you need to create some unique, solid content and make the affiliate links look almost incidental. Maybe one prominent link to an Amazon store would be the best option.

There is also evidence that G. is subjecting this kind of site to human scrutiny. This blatant affiliate marketing would not pass muster.

This website formats weirdly in Safari, FYI. The main menu bar double ups and is undreadable.

I really like the little graphic on the right-hand side though, and the reviews are nice. The tables you have in your reviews are really nice looking, too.

Love the site all around =)

      Kindly,

I see that many of you are visiting the site. Does anyone have any comments or suggestions?

What features / info would you like to see included in this type of site? Does anyone have any suggestions regarding how to best promote it? My plan is to make it a CNET or ZDNET type site but only less technical.

I've already started soliciting short reviews from folks so hopefully, I start seeing some actual user reviews from readers (and maybe even some marketers), provided they are quality.

Do you think it makes sense to offer backlinks in exchange for reviews?

Yeah, I hear ya. I was getting massive traffic from an alternate source and wanted to see how it looked. Unless I utilize that source again, I will probably remove it.

Any thoughts on the, I shudder to say, popup I just added? I added it to do some list building but I'm not sure how I feel about it yet.

        NEVERMIND: Popup didn't work right.

    Thanks everyone for your input!

Btw, does anyone know of a good price comparison plugin?

I'd like to incorporate it in my Amazon niche sites. I'd like to compare the latest prices from Amazon, Walmart, eBay, bestbuy and other Online retailers.
