Need some Direction and Advice

Thank you for your time first and foremost.

I have been lurking the forums for the last couple of weeks and have gained some valuable insight regarding IM I have been drawing up a plan and have been roadblocked on how to proceed.

I am not a member that is in desperate need to make a buck overnight by selling all of my stuff on Ebay or Craigslist. I would however like to augment my income so that I can be more comfortable and pay off my debts.

I currently work 4 days a week as a Systems Engineer and have good benefits etc. I am very technically savvy and have ran a computer business and ran a hosting company.

I would like to take the extra time in the evenings and my 3 days off to build a profitable venture.

I don't want to get distracted by time and money wasters as I do not have the additional money to waste and get burned. I plan and will purchase a membership on this site as it has already been so valuable to me.

Here is what I have learned so Far

1. Find a Niche
2. Find a Problem
3. Identify a solution to this niche problem.
4 Setup Lead Capture System
5. Direct Traffic to the site
6. Followup with content and offers

Here is where I am having problems:
  • Choosing a Niche that is not a time waster
  • Finding the best way to promote without going bankrupt.

I look forward to your Replies.

Kind Regards,

Zach

    Zach,

You're on the right track, with finding a niche of people with a problem that needs solving.

Find a "hair on fire" sort of problem to solve. I work the 'relationship repair niche. That's definently a "want the problem solved NOW" sort of niche.

I'll be happy to help any way I can.

Get with me and I can perhaps advise you on your writing. The writing I can easily do...It's the tech part that slows me down.

    Best of luck

Hmm, time waster. Well, most niches are easy to google and do some research on competitors and see who is making the money in that niche and how they are doing it best. What exactly is your definition of time waster?

As for ways to promote without going broke - there are free methods out the wazoo like social sites, article marketing, video marketing, free press releases, manual backlinking and blog commenting, and that list can carry on forever.

Cheap paid advertising can be done for pennies if you are creative with the keywords.

Well, there are lots of ways and resources to find a niche.
    1. Start by visiting amazondotcom and yahooanswersdotcom. take a look at the popular products at amazon and popular topics at yahoo. Never mind if the product or topic is of interest to you or not. If its popular, people are buying. choose 3-5 and move to the next step.

    2. You can use a google keyword tool or a software such as market sumurai. This method requires you to enter a keyword (enter the one you found at amazon and yahoo) then you are provided information such as searches per month and your competition(low, medium, high) for that keyword. start with keywords that have at least a few thousand searches per month with low competition. Move to next step.

    3. Go ahead and buy your domain and hosting using the exact keyword and but your autoresponder as well. (You said you know this step already but its for those that may not know).

    4. Search clickbank and other vendor sites for product related to your keywords to promote. you can later create or outsource the creation of your own product.

    4. With so many ways to promote, I will just give you to the best of my knowledge the best 5 ways to promote.
    a. Promote by buying solo mail (quick results)
    b. promote by buying ppc (quick results)
    c. promote by blog and articles (not quick but free and can become viral)
    d. promote by offering your affiliates a juicy commission. (100% is juicy)
    e. offline promotions (community newspaper, post cards, yard signs)

Listen, following these steps alone will get you results. Hope this helps you and anyone else who needs a starting point in this business.

Do something you are passionate about or at the very least have a deep personal interest in. Otherwise you could easily lose interest. You can always scale up from there. Might be easiest to start with products or services that people in your "day job" industry need. Ask around to people in your network. Professional groups are a good place to do some market research, plus you will have a built in set of leads. I have fallen into some interesting niches over the years by being open to people around me and things they are saying.

You are way ahead of the pack, I go over how important picking the right niche and keywords are for a newbie so that they can have some success but most of the time, the newbies on my lists still go after real competive markets and keywords and then after working really hard for months, get discouraged and quit or have to start over.

Yes, I know, an experienced IMer can make money in any niche, but newbies need to be more selective, imho.

Finding what to promote, look at the best seller lists on amazon and ebay. Sell what people are already buying.

Then find some keywords for that niche that have over 2500 global monthly exact searches and not a lot of competition.

As for promoting, if you haven't gotten the free backlinks as a War Room member, do that once you have your site up

Darn, I just found out that offer is closed, but keep this link until he comes back with it.

and also get the free targetted traffic social networking automated software, also free in the War Room. Better get this before he takes it down, too.

@zmayo - I'm really glad you started with identifying problems and focusing on solutions. That's the heart of business.

I suggest that people find a niche that you're passionate about, understand deeply, or want to understand better. That helps you through the dark times, but more importantly, it gives you intimate knowledge about what problems need to be solved.

Burton Snowboards was founded by an avid skier, who spent season after season on slopes destroying prototypes until he figured out the best way to build a snowboard. He kept working on them until they didn't suck.

If you want some inspiration and see tech startups in action, I highly recommend you check out Hacker News and Ycombinator. Also listen to This Week in Startups.

Once you've figured out your niche, the problem you're looking to solve, and your solution to the problem, then you can figuring out the marketing stuff. Different sites require different methods, but a mailing list is always a great addition.
