Domain Flipping Question: Please Answer. . .

Experience domainers in the house, kindly help understand this business as I don't know much about it.

I know that most, if not all ,one word domain name have been taken. However, I have been seeing some trend at flippa whereby by people come up with some generic names and sell them. This kind of names do not have traffic volume searches in Google but were sold.
Take for instance, discoupon.com was sold about a month ago at a very reasonable price.

Is it always possible to come up with something like this and sell them? I mean being creative.

Like the above, the seller explained it as discount + coupon = discoupon.com .
There are other cases like this. For instance, i came up with homeo.com and it was available for awhile but I think it was snapped up at where I was constantly checking its availability and value. Hence, the .net .org .info were taken and I learned never to use any other checker apart from whois.com.

Is it always possible to sell domain names like this?
Thank you for your time.

Most domains will only sell for a little bit. Get a site ranking with some keywords and some income to the site and you'll see alot more profits.

I understand what you mean, but I am not talking about website here, but just the domain name.

    Thanks!

Difficult to give a general answer - since it's only domains and you are selling solely based on how smart/interesting/catchy a name is...it would depend entirely on the potential buyer whether he sees a value in such a name and whether he might be able to brand it.
"discoupon.com" is not that bad for a potential branding..so that's why it probably sold well.

Yes there is no clear answer. Its all in the value of the buyer and potential brand of the domain I would guess.

Yes, it is ... but from my own experience, there's quite some luck in it, too. I do a little bit of this, myself. Nothing terribly "upmarket" or "premium" but I'm happy - mostly as an amusing, slightly profitable sideline - to register domains for $8 or so and try to sell them for $25 - $50. Very occasionally I get $100/$150 for one. Much more often I find I can't sell them at all. I've probably bought 150 domains and sold 60-65 of them for "quite good prices". So it is possible to do this. But like anything, there's a learning-curve involved.

Well, I must admit that one would have got past me (i.e. if I'd thought of it, I wouldn't actually have registered it anyway). I see that it might be "brandable", but nobody's searching for "discoupon" (presumably?) and I wouldn't have tried that, myself ...

    Not "always", no.

You have to have an eye for the market and gradually develop some judgment about it.

I'm trying, with patience and discipline, to stay away from anything that's "too clever/obscure" which I just like a lot, myself, but won't be able to sell.

Anything other than a ".com" is very high risk, for this game.

(I did actually get $150 earlier this year for a .net which was unaccountably unregistered, but as they say "it's the exception that proves the rule").

Domain-names have no intrinsic value other than their reg-fee.

Any market value they acquire arises purely from market pressures, i.e. people wanting to buy them. The skill in selling domains for profit is in (a) identifying names which the market probably will want and to which it will attach premium value, and (b) being able to find people who might be interested in specific domains.

I'm no expert on this subject at all - but find it interesting, and fun. Gene Pimentel, whose voice on this subject is clearly a highly authoritative one, has written a little free ebook which you can download from this post, to which Suzanne (another domaining expert) has kindly uploaded it.

The thing about made-up word domains is people may be searching for specific keywords when they want to buy a domain. If the keyword isn't in the domain, it may be missed. In you example, "coupon" was part of the word, so that's probably how it sold.
Years back I sold a couple made-up word domains but it was luck. Really a name only has as much value as a) reg fee or b) the value a potential buyer sees in it.

Thanks to everyone that has commented on this thread.

And Alexa, if there's any word I have to say to you, its :'I LOVE YOU'

I just don't know how you find that passion to enlighten people when you comment but it just goes on to show that you try as much to imagine what was going on in the mind of the poster.

You have commented educatively virtually on all my thread as well as others and at each, you stretch the meaning of what you say in picture.

Often read your comments with a keen mind.
Thanks to you and may God keep you healthy enough to implant in other peoples life the same measures. More power to your elbow.

I have often wanted to learn article writing, marketing and syndication from you. I see you have knowledge in this area and you never fail to comment in a thread that carries any of these titles.
Do you have any written book on this? I am a Nigerian and paypal is no option for me to pay ,but I will appreciate a credit card option.

Can recommend a friend to you? Thanks

Ha. . . This reminds me and as you said Alexa, it must have commercial value. I have learned to do that before now. I saw a value in homeo.com but it was really painful that ,that name was taken from me in no time. I had no money at that time to reg. It. I believe its the handy work of the website were I often checked for its availability but I have learned to moven on and come up with better catchy words.

I have two now and they are commercial in value.

But seriously Alexa, do you have any written ebook for what I asked above?
