Any real SEO benefit to having a mobile-friendly version?

For WP I know it's not too hard to have a mobile-friendly version of a site. Do you rank higher when on a PC from having a mobile-version of your site, or do you rank better for mobile-users when the site is mobile-friendly?

    Google's algorithm is designed to favor the content you're most likely to want/need in any situation. When you do a search, many different "search signals" are used in addition to the words you are searching for, such as your location, your web browser, OS etc so I'm quite sure that mobile friendly content ranks higher when googled from a mobile device.

    Well it wouldn't effect smartphones since they get the same results. Not sure how it effects mobile search still relevant to old style cell phones.
