Microsoft unveils his own social network

I don't know if this news is new or not but it's my first time hearing it.

Microsoft's Social Network Unveiled: Socl

Looks like microsoft wants a share of that social network pie. Think it'll be any different from Google's numerous attempts?

It amazes me how Facebook came from nothing to being while it is today while all these companies with tons of resources, expertise and experience can't come up with something 1/4 as popular.

I think it is because facebook was original. Now people just want to hop in on the bandwagon. In my opinion the only ones that will be successful are niche related social networks. Of course I may be wrong... but look at linkedin... facebook started out as niche related... myspace was niche related then strayed away.

Look at twitter.. twitter blew up, but still not touching facebook. Google + will never get close. Myspace is dead. I just don't see anything by a major company come close to taking any kind of market share away.

The next big thing will not be one of these alternative facebooks... it will be something that makes facebook rethink the way they do things. It will need to be extremely innovative, and be catchy!

Tapping into trends BEFORE they get mainstream is often like that.

In 2004, I sold a 'make content unique' service for $297.

Within months, there were others selling alternatives - for $27.

Today, most of those scripts are given away - for free.

    And nobody wants 'em!

    All success

Boy did you hit the nail on the head with that one... I must say tho. recently there's been a lot of unwanted "updates" going on with facebook. I saw it as an attempt by someone to damage the image of FB but I dont see it working..

Somehow, Mark Z keeps on trucking.

Do you think we'll see FB suffer the same fate as Myspace?

Personally I think Facebook will be around for a long time. I think they will lose some of the market with all the updates they do without consulting members.

I also believe that the next 'Facebook' won't come from one of these big competing companies who are just looking to make more money but from someone with a truly original idea that people will gravitate to.

With all the hackers and spammers attacking Facebook it won't be long before they'll lose their appeal to the masses.

show the ingenuity of human beings.

Microsoft is old news. Too big to go anywhere at this point and Bill Gates off the board, no creative management to lead the company ahead. Proof? Mobile phone OS, android & iOS, where was microsoft? lol

They did it way before that and a lot of us used their phone OS but they ignored it right before smart phones went mainstream.

I still like the old windows mobile for the PDA functions with great programs like Pocket Informant that still hasn't brought the same performance to iOS or Android.

It's hard to copy anyone, especially Facebook and especially in social networks niche... and especially if you want to become big player... Facebook is unique and people get used to FB... it will hard for anyone to get where FB is currently... or they will need to think of something that FB didn't think of... which is again hard...

Facebook is working great for me and I think it will be huge for me in 2013. Maybe I'll ditch the niche sites and just do FB.

G+ will hopefully go die in a fire.

Microsoft need some serious soul searching after the rubbish that is Windows 8. Windows XP started to alienate their most important resource - small software developers such as myself. I haven't a clue how to build an App for Windows 8, but Visual Basic 6.0 was the best thing ever for Microsoft. Think of all the people who HAD to buy Windows, because there were just so many great applications for it, even in the most obscure niches.

Apple and Amazon are doing some great stuff - many millions of people will be unwrapping Kindles and iPads for Christmas.

Niche social networks can still work, and forums are still popular. LinkedIn is another thing worth a look if you're in the IT/business niches.

Facebook will always be on top no matter what.

The next big idea will not come from a big company who has a ton of money to spend on it. It will be from some guy or gal who is so poor that their "idea" will become big and make them an overnight MILLIONAIRE.

facebook will be replaced eventually by an open source social network. FB is being pressured to monetize and progressively will be at odds w/ users.

It happened with office/documents/spreadsheets, browsers, email clients, music etc.....

The next generation of kids will lead the way.

Look at how quickly myspace got dumped for FB. When we reach that point, it will happen quickly to FB as well. There will be plenty of tools to migrate your data over, and keep networks in place etc....so you won't be starting from scratch.

In my own opinion, one of the features that makes Facebook popular is its live chat. What's more, Facebook interface is user friendly.

I'll keep an eye on Socl and see what they could offer to the public.

There's 3 ways to come out on top. Be first, be smarter, or cheat.

    Facebook was first.

Google, Bing and whoever wants to take over or get a piece of the pie are going to have to come up with something extraordinary to beat Facebook.

And I doubt any of those companies got to were they are now by cheating.

I've been using it for two months or so now and I find it a waste of time. A lot of what you can't do on this can be done on Faceook. Google+ even has more features than this. Sorry Microsoft, you're out.

I didn't realize this thread was over a year old. When I saw MS had a "new" social network up, I checked it out right away. My first impression was the site was ugly and unintuitive. Then I came back here and saw this thread is over a year old. I guess so.cl isn't going to catch on. MS hasn't pushed it much . . . I doubt most people have even heard of it. I hadn't until I saw this post.

Facebook will still be the corner stone of online social media, Google +1 tried but not even close to being a relative competition, and I don't see this competiting with facebook either.

Assuming that this network is new, I plan on checking it out, because if you use new networks effectively you can be able to get a lot of followers as the network begins to grow, which is very useful .
