Recommend me a new laptop... mac or pc?

Hi guys... Long time pc user, but have been using a mac book for the past 2 years.

I like mac's os better but my mac has really slowed down... beach ball bonnanza!

I need an upgrade, so, I'm considering a new mac book pro, or an equivilent pc laptop....

Maybe a pc laptop is better, as there's lots of software that won't run on a mac... and boot camp is still a bit unstable...

so... macbook or pc?... I'm near Hong Kong, so can pick em up pretty cheap.

And if pc... any recommendations? Something in the 13" monitor range.

Cheers.

Ye, I do like the look and feel of mac... but there's so much IM software that won't run on it.

Do you use bootcamp or virtual box?

I use virtual box, but the resolution is bad... and it really slows up my mac.

Maybe a top of the line macbook pro would be ok?

I would say go with a PC due to it being universal as far as software goes. Mac is less prone to viruses and IMO are a bit faster. You have to look what you are trying to get out of your pc and how it will help with your business. It is easy to spend bank on a laptop when all you need is a basic functioning computer.

I hear ye... There's been a few times I've left the war room dissapointed, as I cant use the free software on offer.

That said, I also want a laptop that will perform... I always have lots of ap's open, and use photoshop quite a bit... tired of laptops freezing... pc and mac.

I know bootcamp is an option on mac... however, not sure how reliable it is?

Supposed to be some new Macs coming in early 2012.

I thought my PC was dying awhile back. I Reloaded windows and started all over. It was a pain, but then it ran like new. So many things get loaded and bog down a system over time. Sometimes starting over fixes a mushy system.

You might want to wait and see what Apple has been up to. Or you can take a look at the new PC Ultrabooks.

I'm using a MacBook Pro, iMac, iPhone and iPad (all bought in HK). Love the way they all link together.

For Windows programs I run Windows XP in Parallels. Seems to be very stable but I must admit I don't push it with many Windows programs as I prefer to find Mac alternatives.

Why Mac? Well, apart from the inter-connectivity of my various Apple devices and the ease of use I'll tell you a tale...

I was a rabid PC user up to a few years ago. Then I visited a journalist for an interview and he asked me if I minded if he took notes as we talked. Upon my assent he opened up his laptop and started typing.

I stopped him with an exclamation "How did you do that?"

    "Do what?", he answered.

"Do that", I responded, pointing with a quivering finger to his laptop. "How did you just open it up and start using it straight away?"

    "Oh, that. Well - it's a Mac".

It was like the scales had fallen from my eyes. Even now I chuckle as I watch PC users at the airport or on the train open up their laptops and sit there glassy eyed for a few minutes as Windows 'recovers'. Meantime I open my MacBook and instantly carry on from where I left off. And that's not the only advantage to useability, but I won't go on or I'll become a computer/Apple bore!

BTW my MacBook slowed down recently. I cleared out a lot of files so that more than 50% of the hard drive was free.

Then I upgraded to Lion OSX.

Then I disabled the Energy Saver sleep function and left the laptop running overnight. This allows the hard drive to automatically defrag.

      Back to normal speed now.

But if you're buying new I'd go for as much RAM as you can accommodate if you want to run lots of apps. Also, when opening and closing Adobe programs, I use an app called iCleanMemory to recover useable RAM when programs don't clear up after themselves.

I just got a new Macbook Pro 13" two days ago. it is just awesome.

I have been all my life a PC user but after this new baby, there is no coming back.

Macbook Pro is you way to go, much faster and efficient comparing to my old PC laptops and about programs that won't run, you can always install windows on your Mac

so, go for a mac. you'll gain 30% of the time that all pc users lose because their pcs are stuck, or they get error messages.

I have been using a PC- specifically the Samsung NP-R580 for about a year now. It still performs and runs like new, and I haven't even been able to use up half of the memory. I would definitely reccomend it, unless Samsung has a newer model out.

I have an office system with several PC's. But I do all the real work on a MacBook Pro. I'd NEVER go back to Windows, ever, not never ever.

I use VM Ware and it's great!!

I run Illustrator, Fireworks, Dreamweaver, Photoshop and several other apps, and have VM Ware sitting in the background with Windows XP. I can go for weeks without a re-boot. That's priceless.

      Why not have both?

I'm planning on keeping my Windows 7 based desktop and get a Macbook pro laptop within the next couple of months. Despite some of the obvious setbacks, Windows computers have definitely improved over the years. Having said that, there are lots of benefits to having a mac as well (based off of what I've seen from Mac owners). This way, you'll get the best of both worlds!

Besides my Windows 7 desktop, I also have a Windows 7 Toshiba laptop. And the laptop is a different story. This thing runs out of battery WAY too fast... which obviously is pretty bad considering that it's a mobile device! This is another reason why I'm thinking of upgrading my laptop to a mac. I'm assuming that the batter power is much batter on mac laptop (haven't done the research yet) given that I have an iPad that I do a TON of stuff on and I rarely have to charge it.

If you want to keep playing SMALL and MEDIOCRE in your online or offline business, gladly get a MAC. And be proud of it's beautiful, shiny design. But mostly, be limited by it's ridiculously small software availability.

    PC: ************
If you want to EXPLODE your business with POWER, SPEED and IMPACT of a nuclear-bomb, get Windows. Because 99% of world's niche software that saves you time, energy and makes you MONEY... is Windows-only.

For example, 5 Windows software I use EVERYDAY to run my business, expand my self and get things DONE... doesn't exist on MAC.

    SUMMARY: ************
    Get a PC with Windows.

Out of the 4 computers I've done a lot of work on, the Mac was by far the worst. It crashed more than the 3 pcs combined. Someone typed earlier 'once you go to mac, you never go back.' You can't say that anymore, because I went back.

The best computer has been the one I have now, a Lenovo laptop. I'm on the road for an extended time and I am doing everything with just one machine. I couldn't have a better puter for it.

I've seen several topics in the war room that started off with a free software, available for windows only, and usually with a mention that a mac version won't be coming out. That doesn't stop the requests for a mac version.

The plot thickens! Hmmmm... I do agree that there's more software for the pc... I know there's virtual box etc... but I always felt that really slowed down mac.

What's windows 7 like? I really like macs no bs os.... windows always seemed to bug me with pop up crap.

I really just want something that's super fast, as I'm starting to do more video work... I've heard the mac book pro is the fastest there is.....

I can get the top of the line 15" mac for around 2000euro in hong kong... What sort of pc laptop could I get in this price range?

Dollar for dollar, you get a much better deal with a pc. Mac has a big bucks attitude that gets to me. They only give 90 days of free phone support when you buy one. Any pc I've ever had gets a year.

There have been several posts in this forum from people who aren't thrilled about their new mac. One woman asking for help with hers typed 'it wasn't supposed to be like this.' I thought it was a chuckle but she didn't seem to be appreciating the humor. (You know how often you hear 'get a mac, all your problems will be over?')

One person commented 'don't tell me a mac can't get a virus. I've had a serious problem with mine.'

And how bout that Admin guy.

I have a goofy problem with itunes not being able to sync video and audio, so I checked into the mac forums. There is one goofy problem after another there. No one there is saying 'get a mac, all your problems will be over.'

The MacMouth type of stuff has started to get to me. I realize that there are a lot of intelligent users who would never just talk it up, but some of them don't seem to know more about their macs than 'it costs waaaay more and it looks better so it must be better.'

Pardon me. I thought a bit about this since the last post and thought I'd add to it. I don't think I'll visit the topic again.

What do you mean on "mac" and "pc"? Apple Macintosh and Personal Computer? This question always making me bewildered.

All Apple Macintosh computers are PC, because:
    • they are personal computers;
    • they use the same architecture and made of the same hardware as all other IBM PC clone brands (e.g. Sony, Lenovo, Asus, Aser etc).

I can't believe we are even having this debate.

I used to run a cubicle mill with 40+ PC's and only 6 MacBook Pro's that I purchased from a friend to help him out. With the money I spent on maintaining, updating and constantly fixing the PC's I could have had 100+ Macbook's which everyone in the office agreed were light years ahead of the PC alternative.

If you've owned both side by side then there is no question that the Apple computer is better.

I was a PC guy my entire life, literally since I was old enough to use a computer. About a year back though I switched to a MacBook Pro and I can't imagine using anything else. Once you get adjusted to it you'll see what I mean.

For all my Windows software, I just have a separate "budget" laptop I use. Now that I outsource most stuff though, I've stored the PC away until I need it again. I HIGHLY recommend Mac, this is coming from someone who talked smack about Apple for a long, long time, only to eat my words later on.

I would go for a Mac. I've been a PC user my whole life and I bought my first Mac in 2009 and I will NEVER go back to PC. (Well I might buy one just for gaming purposes to max out the graphics!)

I don't understand people saying that some software programs won't run smoothly on their Mac with BootCamp. I play Battlefield 3 on my iMac through BootCamp, running Windows 7, without problems.

For me it's not a hard choice - Mac all the way.

I would go for the Mac, as well.

I am biased since I've used them pretty much my whole life, but since you already stated that you like the OS better you might as well go with that! That can make a big difference in how efficient you are on the computer.

While I hate the "trendy" BS that surrounds Macs now (and the annoying people who buy them "cuz they're sooo cuuuuute" or whatever), I still believe that the experience is much better.

A couple notes about things that have been brought up, though:

Mac do have less viruses at the moment, but it has nothing really to do with the computers or OS themselves. It's simply because hackers haven't had as much interest since the majority of the market share has been held by PCs. Macs have actually performed pretty badly in side-by-side hacking comparison tests. Get the appropriate anti-virus software and use it!

About the software that is available, a simple solution is to run Parallels as others have suggested. Like the viruses though, the IM-related programs available for the Mac are quickly catching up. :p My partner and I do have a PC hanging around in case we need it, but he's the only one who uses it, and only very rarely. They might not be as mainstream, but the products are out there. If you have trouble finding a program you need, you can usually ask here on the forums or elsewhere and other Mac users (there are lots of IM folks on Macs) will chime in with suggestions.

Just my opinion. In terms of a basic "computer", the PC is better for the price. But I just couldn't...

edit: Also, a good alternative to Parallels is VMWare Fusion, which allows you to run both OS X and Windows at once, in a multi-screen setup - some people like this over Parallels.
