How do e-commerce sites drive organic traffic?

Morning All, I keep hearing the same thing over and over in regard to content and delivering value to the customer etc driving seo and subseqently traffic from google etc.

I was just wondering, how do e-commerce sites drive traffic from the search engines? They don't have any 'high' levels of content with keywords so how do they rank for them?

For example if I type in ladies jumpers, marks and spencers (UK store) will appear on the first page of google. Now they don't have pages and pages of content telling us how to get the best out of ladies jumpers or the top 5 ladies jumpers in fashion etc. I am just wondering how this works.

This may be an stupid question but I'm new online and was just intrigued as to how these huge ecommerce sites drive traffic.

Thanks in advance

G

I agree that e-commerce sites usually don have high levels of content, but you can create a simple blog with your main website (like a knowledge base about e-commerce business ) to get benefits from SEO.

And when it comes to the organic traffic for e-commerce website, then classified ads could be helpful. You can also focus on social media marketing techniques for the traffic improvement.

Don't just think of 'value to the customer' as being for information, articles and teh like. Marks and Sparks are one of the biggest stores here in the UK. and so many people shop at them they MUST be considered value for money.

Now with regards value I think a well priced deal on computer equipment with quality service is often more useful than a review on a motherboard, if I am looking for a new motherboard. Both have their uses but I have no issues with the selling sites coming up when I google the items.

Also consider that many people will be linking to stores such as M&S, so that will help SEO. It is also becoming more and more true (imo) that Google are liking 'brands'. they want established names, and sites with an actual service, to be coming top of the list rather than some no mark with a review site that knows a bit of SEO

It is a lot about trust, brand and money. Google trusts these sites, and they also have brand reach which means they get linked to, and the money for paid SEO campaigns from the best in the business. that is not to say they can't be beaten on certain keywords (many of which they are, as you say, awfully optimised for), just that when in doubt google is likely to put trust in them rather than the little guy

As another example see how high Amazon rank for thousands and thousands of keywords they have no SEO for

Backlinks, it has always been about backlinks. You can look at Apple as another example. You can search for laptops and apple shows up on the first page, yet you can go to their site and not find one mention of laptop anywhere... yet they have hundreds of thousands of quality backlinks that have the keyword laptops in its anchor...
