To Niche or Not To Niche

Greetings Warriors!

I have come to consult your expertise and maybe share some here and there. I'll try and keep this brief. (Writer!)

A little background on me...

As you can see, I've been a member for a while, but have not participated very much. I'm one of those people from Digital Point where my post count is nearing 1000. That's all I'll say about DP.

I have an extensive knowledge of IM acquired since 2006.

About my site...

I'm on...oh, I don't know, maybe my 8th website and I've settled. I finally got the hang of picking a decent domain and stuff like that. I sucked at that at first. For example, my first URL was (don't laugh) weblogblender.com Wahahaha! Stop laughing. hehehe

My current flagship blog/website is nearing it's second birthday. Yay!

The stats...

- 3000+ visitors a month
- Seeing some minimal revenue from Adsense and Amazon
- ...and I'm drawing a blank

So here's the deal...

I want to take it to the next level. There are some things askew. Tiffany Dow was kind enough to look it over for me, and she basically confirmed what I already knew.

My site is ALL OVER THE PLACE. While my domain, keywords, etc. indicate that it is a site geared toward writers, my About page says you can hire me.

It seemed like a good idea at the the time. I'd like to focus on helping other writers AND offer my services. I have articles on a wide range of topics, most noted are my posts about things that afflict me like Attention Deficit Disorder and Intracranial Hypertension.

The problem...

Those topics fall outside my niche, BUT they also bring in a TON of traffic. My most popular post is "Famous People with ADD". This post alone constitutes a third of the traffic on my site. That is VERY HARD to let slide. Sure, I could create another site and move those posts there, but...

1. I don't want another site to maintain.
2. I fear my traffic an meager revenue will leave with it.

Is there a feasible way to write about EVERYTHING, but still focus on writing? Is it as simple as changing what page on my site my readers land on? Or changing the banners they see when they land?

NOTE: The tagline is on it's way out. I've already decided to remove that.

So, my dear Warriors, I covet your expert advice. Thank you so much for your time. I'm very eager to be here and share in return.

    Hi Ava,

I just took a quick look at your site.

Yes, it is a little all over the place with lots of different topics that don't go well together but I don't think that's the end of the world.

Personally, if I was you and was only getting 3,000 visitors per month to the site I would probably cut my losses and get rid of the posts that aren't related to the domain. I don't necessarily mean that I would get rid of the content altogether - I would move it to a site that was relevant. That's assuming that you're not getting a great income from those posts. If you wrote about that topic in the first place, you obviously know something about it and would be able to continue writing about it somewhere else.

The domain is related to writing and I personally like to keep everything relevant. I think that relevancy is quite important and I predict that it will be even more important in future Google algorithm updates.

If, as you say, you don't want to go ahead and create any new sites to house this content and you want to leave it where it is, I think that's fine too. Your domain is directly related to writing and, if that's the direction that you want to continue it, I think that if you just left that irrelevant content where it is and focus on creating content about writing you can start to pull things around.

You probably need to dilute that irrelevant content with content more closely related to your domain and the theme of your site. I think that if you just started writing about the topics that you want to form the direction of the site, you can begin to pull in traffic more closely related to the focus of your site.

That way, you don't have to lose any of the income that those popular and irrelevant posts that are bringing you AND you can shift the focus of the site in the direction that you want.

You should still make those popular pages monetized to a greater extent through - perhaps an Amazon affiliate link on each of those names that are included in your famous people with ADD. Just get people to Amazon and there's always a chance that they may purchase the book or are cookied in for when they buy something else. You could link to books for authors and even links to autobiographies and other books for sports people and artists.

I notice that the most popular pages on your site are either resource lists (famous people with ADD) and review posts. Perhaps you can create some great posts about writing with the same style - eg. lists and reviews. People are more likely to share posts that have great researched lists and great reviews. Some great sharable content should be great. Posts like this help to bring in traffic and if you stick to your writing niche, but keep the same interesting style, you should be fine.

    Hope that helps a little.

It's quite a difficult choice to make but there are no real right or wrong answers. Just stick to creating content in the direction you want the site to go and everything will all into place.

With the often changes in the search engine's algorithm quality, latest, and unique content must be prioritized in the site, and it is better to have related niches in promotions.

I didn't look at your site, but I can bet that if a third of your traffic comes to your site to see which famous people have ADD that you have pretty few prospects for your "help a writer" niche.

3000 visitors a month is not that much, especially if most visitors don't help you advance your business goals. You could easily do better than this and advance your business goals by starting a site dedicated to helping writers.
