I found a new FREE office...the LIBRARY!!!

by BJ Min
65 replies
A couple weeks ago, I asked on how to stay motivated
or how to get more productive...

...and couple people mentioned to me that they
like to work outside the home...like go to starbucks
or go to the library...

and for the past couple days, I've done that...

and to be honest with you...I've gotten MORE done
these past 2 days compared to any day ever for
2 whole months...

It's amazing how much you can get done OUTSIDE THE HOME...

I like the library because it's quite...free...and nice...

So for you guys lacking motivation...try going to
the library...

You will surprise yourself on how much you will get done...

Obviously, you do need a laptop but getting a laptop
is well worth the investment...

take care,

BJ

PS...Also, it's good to be around people too...maybe
the librarians will feel like my co-workers in the future...=)

Do they charge for Wi-fi in the libraries?
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[452184].message }}

Usually the wi-fi is free, sometimes you'll need to have a library card - a very good investment anyway! My library has over 100 desktop machines available at no charge to library card holders, so you don't necessarily even need a laptop.

It's worth checking out your neighborhoods to find the best library....comfiest chairs, best light, least noise ... that sort of thing. There might also be some spin off advantages, for example my local library has Brown Bag Business lunches every month ... so if you were looking for offline marketing opportunities you might be able to capitalize on that.

No they don't charge for the WiFi in libraries, but typically they don't have enough electrical outlets so be prepared.

I like activity but I don't like to listen to it while I'm working so i use earpluggs. Yap they work every time. This opens up a few more places to go and work. Try it.

Another benefit to using the library is that there is a ton of ready made ideas for article writing and other inspirations all around you.

Other than the library though, around where I live, some book stores, coffee shops, and resturants have free wi-fi. Come in, buy a coffee, and sit down with the laptop for a few hours in peace and comfort.

I never go to the library, but I do hit coffee shops now and then, mostly just to get out of the house for a different atmosphere.

I can't say I really get "more work done" though. I have an office that's in the back of the house, and separates me from any of the "noise", so I don't really have problems with "real world distractions".

My 2 year old daughter does like to sneak in now and then to cause havoc, but that's a pleasant interruption.

Whatever you do, I think it's good to switch it up every now and then, especially if you spend long hours in one spot.

So who else thinks it is actually more productive to work from home?

No noisy schoolkids (apart from your own), you won't have the chance to eavesdrop on someone else's complaints and trivial chat that doesn't matter to you, no waiters looking at you as if you are a ghost, no patrons who can't wait for you to leave so they can actually use the table to do what the place was designed for (if it's a library, to read and borrow the books there, not to go there and study or do your own thing).

Besides, I don't see any real high-earners working in a public place all day. They actually have a real office (either at home or in a building).

While the biggest share of my time is spent in my home office, I've been known to work from several local libraries, coffee shops, the food court at the mall and picnic tables at several parks.

Using my little digital voice recorder as a stenographer, I've recorded articles and outlines sitting on the beach or a fishing pier waiting for the fish to bite.

Sometimes a change in scenery is the ticket to get through a block or slump...

I agree with you Allen. I tried going to a local coffee shop a couple days ago and got nothing done. Apparently I am way too much of a people watcher. There was just too many distractions.

I like to get out of the house occasionally, usually to a coffee shop or library. Over here (England), McDonalds are offering free WiFi in a lot of places, and their cappuccino is nicer than you might imagine!

Also, over here at least, libraries have free computers and internet access so a laptop isn't a necessity.

I can't honestly say I'm more productive when I work away from home as I'm too nosey; I end up watching what everyone else is doing instead of working!

I've worked at Panera since they have free WIFI. I've also tried Starbucks. But they can get pretty noisy and the people watching can get in the way.

I like the library idea since it should a lot quieter. And I just checked my local public library's website and they all have free WIFI. Gonna try that out next week.

I haven't been to the library in a long time. Thanks for the reminder they exist.

      My secret is out!

I prefer working at home - but there are those days when ideas won't come, or I just can't sit still and stay focused.

I just take a notebook and pen and go to the library and get ideas for niches and for articles. By the time I come home, brain is working again. I don't really work at the library as I don't stay longer than an hour or so usually.
I just mine it for ideas and inspiration.

    HI,

I trained as a qualified librarian before I got into IM, I have to say a library is a great place to hang out (I know I'm a geek), fortunately for my IM work I have an office I can escape to, this helps me keep motivated as working from home would be too distracting.

I love the library. My library even has closed in offices for business use and it's free When you've got kids it's hard to focus at home so I love to go to the library and work. I'll also go to the bookstore and use their free wifi. It's good to change your environment. Helps to keep me focused.

I use the library twice a week just to get a change of scenary. It helps. Most libraries are quite. You get free WiFi, and you can look at other people while, taking care of business. its also helps if between breaks walk around and get a magizines during your brain freeze.

I love going to my library to work. They have these great little desk cubbies buried deep in the aisles next to a window but I don't get distracted watching the comings and going of folks.

Having worked for over 40 years in either an office or a newsroom where people were constantly milling around, I found that working at home was difficult in the beginning. I'm used to it now. But when I do take to the library, it's fantastic. I get more done because even though it's a quiet place, there are other people working, moving and talking. That puts me right back in the workforce and triggers the work ethic that is easy to ignore at home. The library environment puts me in a totally different frame of mind.

There are many benefits to working at the library:

      1) handy access to research
      2) free computers if you want to use them for the internet
      3) plug-in for your laptop (save the battery) - no internet, though.
      4) glassed in private rooms where you can set up your "office"
      5) people to talk to when you need a break
      6) peace and quiet when you need to do serious work
      7) helpful librarians if you need them
      8) books you can take home if you don't finish in time
      9) it's all free

Libraries are like your own huge workplace - all the service without the cost.

      It's a great place!

But I have to admit... sometimes I, too, tend to be a bit nosy and can get
distracted by what others are doing.

I agree with all of this. Main reasons for me of those is the research and the isolation. I feel bad about going there because I want to stay home with my wife and daughter as much as possible. I would get a lot more done if I went there for even just 3 or 4 hours a day.

The biggest reason for me, though, is just the amount of research that I can do. If you want articles that are different than what everyone else is doing on the internet then read a book or two about the subject. Most everything on the internet is just rehashing what someone else wrote and I found myself doing the same thing...just reading a few articles online and rewriting it. I felt lame for doing it.

I have a lot of other niches that I am going to be writing for and I already hit the library and came back with 14 books that are going to become probably a few hundred articles and a couple dozen reports.

I can only imagine how much faster all that would come along if I would do the work there instead of bringing it home. The wife and daughter would probably like for me to be home and not on or near the computer 12 hours a day either. It might be that a few hours a day at the library might make the rest of the time I spend with the family a bit more focused and enjoyable.

yeah...i just came back from the library today...and again, i got so much done in such a long time...

it's great because once you get there, you will pretty much get your work done...

you won't go to youtube.com and watch funny videos...or play blackjack online or whatever...or lie down on the bed for a break...u just can't do that in the library...

so it's great...again, it may not be for everyone but for myself, i notice i get 2 to 3 times more done in the library than at home...

so now i go there every day i decide to work...you guys really should try it out...

    Yes,
I may try that myself too. Especially as its quite hot and libraries are usually pretty cool. What if you want some lunch or a coffee, though, out comes the wallet!

Good idea, I often give myself a 'muffin break' some afternoons and stroll down to the local centre. Very invigorating I guess. Its a very solitary occupation isn't it the internet? For about a year plus I did my work in the library. It's very conducive but best of all, it stops me from wanting to crawl into my bed.

The only problem is that the library is rather popular over here and so once I pack up to go for lunch, I won't get any seat when I return.

I am sure there are a few of you with children out there that would greatly benefit from less noise and interruptions in the library.

The libraries here in Nashville, TN are pretty nice. Free wifi. It would not be that good if you had to pay for wireless considering the public library is funded with tax dollars.

I agree heavily with this. I have been going to starbucks and find that I am super focused lately. It's almost like i won't leave until i finish what i'm working on. If i was at home i would just pass out, struggle, or get distracted. At starbucks sometimes i go there and am there for 5 hours! That is 5 HOURS of productive work!

I think the reason i feel more productive there is because everyone around me is also doing work. Plus, it's a fun and social environment, whereas my home is quiet and dull.

Great post! If you haven't tried working outside of your home than go for it!

I tend to get about 50% of all my work done in my college study hall. Lovely view of the lake, total silence, comfy chairs; and I'm their all the damned time anyways.

Library's are nice to. I guess I'm partial to the study hall because I have a few hours between most classes, and can get some work done while I'm still on campus.

I've spent a lot of time managing my Internet
businesses on the move and always enjoy working
from little cafes - especially when you find one
with attractive staff - it makes work so much easier.
Thing is you do have to spend a fair bit so that you
    don't look rude.

The amount of money I had to spend in Spanish
restaurants came to about 15 Euro per day as I
just couldn't find a cafe to relax and have a decent
    cup of tea in.

I suppose usage of WIFI is free in libraries. Isn't there
a city in the States that is totally covered with free
    WIFI for all?

You can rent a desk in shared offices at some places
in London with lots of others in the same position - they
have a shared kitchen and sometimes a lounge area so
you can meet people and have a little conversation
    in between working.

I've always found working in a new environment always

This is funny because today I was able to leave work early and I thought, I'd work somewhere other than myself. I went to Whole Foods but couldn't get a plug and my battery started to die about 50 minutes while sitting there. I had googled and saw there was a library about a block away. I made a turn where I thought it was and it turns out it was a school and they were letting out just then. It was packed and I actually was stuck in a pickup traffic line that took me 1/2 an hour to get out. (It is a huge high school).

I decided that I'd give up on trying to find the library so went to a Panera's. That was perfect. I found an outlet, got lemonade for 2.00 and set up shop. I noticed how much I wanted to get up- no kitchen to make creative snacks, no bed for a nap, no tv, didn't get on cell phone because the elevator music there was too weird etc. It was great to not have distractions and I got a lot done.

The downside was that I was paranoid about guarding my laptop so didn't take a restroom break or get a muffin. I think we can find distractions wherever we go but for me, leaving the house to work was very fruitful.

I discovered that I love working in the library some time ago. All the research that I could ever want is right there at my fingertips, plus there is free WiFi. Also, I do not spend any unnecessary money on coffee or other items.

I love the idea of the library. I've found that when I'm isolated I am a lot more productive, and working at home it can be hard to do that sometimes. I use to go there in college all the time to study, I really should give it a try now too!

I didn't realize that some libraries offered networking opportunities. That's interesting.

Funny, when I was in college I never went to the library. I always went to the nearby coffee shop to work during the day. I ran kind of an expensive tab there. Supporting a family made that not quite so attractive an option.

I can't go to coffee shops cheaply.

I love libraries . . . so I wouldn't be able to get a darn thing done there. I'd be wandering the book isles and loading up.

    Hello BJ Min,

The library is my regular backup place to work

It is quiet, with free Wi-fi and close to my home.

Once a year my internet connect connection goes out for a day, I head staright to the library.

McDonalds is offering free Wi-ifi in Florida at most locations

There are many more places ... just Google them

    Best Regards

I've just recently rediscovered our local library, and they do have Wi-fi. At times, I can work there, but since I'm a school band director, I miss the noise. I find that my mind wanders when it's too quiet. I know that sounds strange, but that's how my mind works. To each his own, I guess.
