Is Online Advertising Bigger than Print (magazines)

Had an argument yesterday on Twitter. I argued that the internet is killing print magazines due to the fact that smart phones, laptops and tablets have taken over. One guy argued that print magazines (he's in the magazine business and didn't want it to be true) still generate more money in advertising. The same guy didn't know Google was a billion dollar website either though.

What do you think? Is the internet killing print media?

Putting a dent in it, yes. Killing it, no.

Ever look at the cost of a full-page ad in a popular magazine? About $70,000-90,000+ (a four-colour 1 page in Bon Appetit magazine costs $175,000 for one issue). Advertisers are not paying those prices for long if they aren't seeing an ROI.

Yeah but overall I would say Google Adsense is worth more than ANY magazine's advertising campaign... wouldn't you agree?

Internet is the 100% traffic generation tool for your business. .... BUT.....

I think both internet and print media advertising has there own importance.
Internet is the greatest tool for capturing both worldwide or nationwide traffic towards your business website. But people hesitate either its a spam business or real business. Here, internet is going to fail.

Print media is effective and necessary for you business. but you may only display ads in your country newspaper or magzines for the other general public, who never use internet or even other who use internet. They shows the business is actually live and running near you.

    I think both are necessary.

    Regards,

The internet's reach is just beyond the scope of any print media. You can observe that reputable magazines will have a website that features their product. Internet marketing is just where the trend is heading. So please tell your twitter friend, GGurls, that it would be wise for him to create a varied portfolio or he will be severely left behind with the times.

    My opinion.........

Bigger? Yes. More reach? Yes. Cost More To Place An Ad? Probably Not. Generate More Income Per Ad? Not Sure, Probably Not.

I can tell you this though, the whole online internet world has crippled the traditional printing industry in many areas that used to flourish.

From what I understand the printing industry is not anywhere close in production as it used to be.

Which has to have a bearing and some kind of impact on the advertising side of things. Less products printed, means less print avenues and revenues for print advertising.... I believe?

As a whole, the internet is probably bigger and reaches a wider audience than print media. I think the guy would do well to actually tap into online media for his print magazine.

There are still a lot of advertisments in magazines, almost half of the pages are dedicated to promoting products, so I would say print media is far from being dead.

The question is, what will happen in a couple of years? People have given up print media for the most part, they go online to read newspapers, so I assume that it is only a matter of time until they will dissapear completely and we will only read articles online.

If you get the good smaller magazines like Small Biz oppurtunities ect. The rates can be very reasonable and if you look at the back issues, you will see those ads have stood the test of time. Yes a full page is like 10 grand but with the same ads monthly they must be paying out. Although you can get a 1/24 I'm sure for less than a grand.

I guess it is, if it isn't it will be.

Take a look at PC World magazine, back in the year 2001/2002 it was so THICK, full of ads. Now its a slim piece of publication. Most of its advertisers that used to pay 27,000$ for 1 full page add now converted to online.

I believed so, most of the people now a days define internet as source of information.
many have different tactics advertising online, unlike magazine - just articles and images.

If you combine what people spend online and what they spend on ads in magazines, you will see that the internet is killing it bigger then ever before.

I would love to see someone professional in the statistics business do a throughout research to see how much bigger the internet is over print media.

I feel that Internet Marketing is getting bigger and is definitely the best choice of marketing for any company but print media isn't going out of style anytime soon and consider that these magazines have websites too. Many advertisers may indirectly be taking advantage of online advertising without noticing.

I don't know if we've reached the tipping point or not (where online is bigger than all print combined) but print is definitely getting hit hard by online.

I toured the Canadian printing facilities for the two largest magazines in the world (Watchtower and Awake). They're currently printing about 25% of the world's production for those mags or 20 million issues a month. As of January 2013 they cut the size of their magazines in HALF and started pushing readers to their website big time. Why? Costs. They cited that due to the decline of the newspaper industry paper is becoming much more expensive and difficult to source, and since they're supported entirely by donations, you have to cut costs wherever possible.
