How should I spend $400-500 for marketing my blog??

Just made $600 providing some text adds from my blog's second client. Going to reinvest $400 to $500 into marketing the blog so this post is to get ideas and suggestions from experts here on how to best spend that $400-500.

The blog

The blog is a travel blog focusing on a niche market, travel in China www.chinatravelgo.com I've been putting a lot of work into for the last 7 months. The blog basics are

-Paid for wordpress wpzoom magazine theme
-Alexa rank between 700-800k
-page rank of 4
-average around 100-110 unique visitors daily
-on page 2-3 of google for most key words

Things have so far

-reasonably well done facebook fanpage with less than 100 fans
-over 2000 twitter followers that bring basically no twitters or traffic
-Stumbleupon account that brings around 100 or so stumbles per post
-flickr account with 150 plus photos
-neglected youtube account with two videos that does nothing
-kind of neglected squidoo account/lens that does nothing
-several article accounts such as ezine that don't do much
-all posts are well social bookmarked
-neglected instructables account that brings in the occasional visitor

Paid Marketing done so far

-a backlinks package from warriors that was basically a waste of money, a learning experience $47
-two back link volcano packages for competitive key words that were reasonably successful $200

Marketing objective

Basically more targeted traffic to provide increased value to current and future clients who advertise text/box/banner etc links on the blog. Achieve this through (this is where my plan gets a little vague)

-increase in SERPs for at least 3-4 reasonably competitive key words
-more traffic from google and other search engines
-increase in page rank but not really important

Note: Plan to continue spending most of the blog's revenue on marketing for the next half year (maybe less) so this $400-500 will be the beginning of a marketing budget

SO fellow warriors, suggestions, ideas, strategies and so forth on how best to spend this $400-500 would be greatly appreciated!!!

I'd go do some blog commenting to increase your links for free.

If you really want to spend money, try a facebook contest with a giveaway related to china travel. Post the contest on contest sites and watch the traffic and likes roll in.

I would invest about $100 on content writing to create a high quality mini ebook about visiting China and put it behind a protected page in Facebook so in order to download it users will have to clike "like" on your page.
second, I would buy media (banners) on few relevant sites to send traffic to your FB page and site.

(and for free, I would add a "like" button on top of each article as well as on the bottom).

Hi JD, I'm not sure that blog commenting, even on relevant blogs, is an efficient use of time but worth considering. A facebook contest is an idea and I've seen other people do this with travel blogs. May need more fans though.

Hi Gclass, I write all the content for my blog so no need to pay for it. Making a quality ebook for facepage like you suggested is worth looking into.

Hi Fluff, blog post introductions can be fed onto a fanpage. More fans means more traffic to blogs and more sharing. Can be super effective once your number of fans reach critical mass.

            Hi FF, Nice ideas.

I've looked at social media marketing (SMM). Advertising on individual sites like facebook would work but not sure if it is good value. There are mobs like SEOmoz that set up campaigns but i'm a little dubious about them. What SMM in particular have you used?

Done guest blogging for well regarded sites with alexa ranks as high as 23,000. Traffic ranged from 10 to 20 views for each post. Was very dissapointed by this.

Please keep these great ideas coming

Advert in Facebook can be of good value. I would also invest in automated backlinking tools like SEnuke or Magic Submitter

I think you should focus on SEO. With $400 you can do serious work (check the WSOs here there are a few cool offers)

Also be sure to use a part of that money for high quality content. After all content is the king right?

Social media marketing is cool, but you wont have much impact and the results will take time to come. I would prefer to start with SEM later when the site already has traffic and I will do it with some kind of contest like "post photos from your china trip and win a...."

Yeah i also think so $400 is enough for SEO. I you want to spend that much of money just spend don't take advice but you have to do little bit of seo alone and learn how these all kind of things are worked

Problem with PPC is it does not improve SERPs or the site and all benefits stop as soon as you stop paying. Facebook is the same with the difference being you have increased fans which can be very beneficial.

Exactly what I'm thinking Nikolas The WSO's seem to be very hit and miss so researching those. Any recommendations or ones that you have used with good results?

For the time being, I am signing up clients to advertise for them and not doing adsense or click based advertising. May change that soon though.

I am afraid I haven't used anything yet, but I am thinking to check this one for my next launch, but as I said I haven't used it yet so don't take my word for anything.

  • I would do the following

$200 - BuildMyRank submissions for 1 month, see how your rankings go with it, some keywords do well, some not so good - i can help you out with this, let me know

$100 - hiring someone to do manual blog commenting and forum posting on travel sites such as lonelyplanet etc

$100 - content creation/ebook creation to buff out your blog a bit more to offer some good value to your visitors

$100 - video marketing, if you are in china you can do this yourself, people love to watch videos of places to go etc when researching a country. I traveled china for 6 months in 2009, i would always check out youtube and google a city to see what it was like and if i would like it there.
