Facebook marketing is not new...

I don't know for sure what to put as "something new"... plus, I'm a kind of guy that's traditional... if you think a little about that, all that's traditional still works the best, and most innovative things dance only for a short amount of time...

Agree, stick to the basics of marketing. If you look at some of the top people in IM, they use the fundamentals of marketing that have been around for years........see books by Ogilvy, Cialdini, Caples, Abraham, Kennedy, etc... (I know I'm missing some just off the top of my head, but that is a good start).....nothing wrong with being innovative, just have a good foundation of the fundamentals.

Marketing via mobile apps is only just beginning, that's "new".

I would agree with mgeener; mobile app marketing is the future. Just think about how often we are on our phones now.

Social media is not new but the newest. Still, traditional SEO search is king for selling stuff.

Totally agree...I would go to say nothing much has changed in marketing since the days of Julius Caesar. Human nature has relatively remained the same.

The best thing I ever did for my internet marketing career was read books like Scientific Advertising by Claude Hopkins, Reality in Advertising by Rooser Reeves and the Robert Collier Letter book.

Entirely true. Marketing is still the same thing, with the same basic principles. Utilize logos, ethos, and pathos to convince a customer to buy your product. Only thing that has changed is the platform that it is performed on.

      Agreed.

And every marketer should read "Claude Hopkins - Scientific Advertising".
I think it's from 1927 or so... still valid today.

      Cheers,
      Rob

The new marketing - or for new and effective tools - I would highly recommend LinkedIn. I have been using it very successfully over the past three years (actually just published an ebook on how I do my marketing on LinkedIn)
I think most marketers are not aware how powerful LinkedIn really is!

Bet if I get a teleportation machine back to the 1800's nothing much would have changed. Just the internet to help meet a more larger audience.

The smart guys back there would be doing the same thing.

    - Enter a good niche.
    - Build a list of customers
    - Build up a good relationship.
    - sell them....err....stuff.

I bet in 10000 years from now, when people are flying in cars and talking about their latest marketing event, these tactics will not have changed much.

Why facebook is such a great platform is that you narget your niche right down to the bone.
Think about how much info you give facebook, or someone you know does, and you can be amazed and how will you can target specfic niches.

Businesses have put up their own sites that grow vast every day competing with each other, harnessing all of their resources to get traffic, clients, and potential business partners. I guess, there's still nothing new with internet marketing but rather on the methods that businesses use to get the best out of their biz.

I can not agree completely. The internet marketing always changes (i am not talking about the traditional one).
I expected Google+ to be premiere marketing tool, but it did not turned up to my expectation. I only hope Google will make some good changes.

Also I have a feeling Bing, Twitter will make some good improvements which will help IM. (just reading the Bing webmaster blog yesterday!)

I think internet marketing is a constantly changing business, but the basic marketing concepts stay the same. If you are focused on SEO, that is where the real changes are taking place. In order to dominate, you really need to keep up with what the SEs are looking for, and are tuned for

The principals of successful marketing are the same, but there is ALWAYS something new in internet marketing...

      Phone Broadcasting
      Text Broadcasting
      CPA (cost per action)
      CPV (cost per view)
      Video sales pages
      Mobile Apps
      funded proposals

I could go on but you get the picture
