Facebook Fans or Email List?

Was just wondering what you guys think about facebook fans vs email list.

Are they the same thing ? Is email becoming obsolete? Does anyone check their

emails anymore? I was just wondering what to concentrate on.

Focus on both. Never just one or the other - everyone's experiences are always different.

I myself focus now on mainly email, but my Fan page is still out there.

    No.

One is targeted traffic already known to have a specific interest in what you're promoting.

The other is social traffic, a proportion of whom you might eventually persuade to be interested in what you're promoting just because you're the person doing the persuading.

They're entirely different. Both in their origins and in the way one builds relationships with them. (By email, one can "send high-quality content" which is received "individually"/"personally": it builds a completely different sort of relationship, and one can far more easily become recognised, respected and trusted on that basis. Those are the criteria which typically lead to sales).

"Quality" and "relevance" are good things to concentrate on, for all aspects of marketing, really.

That's part of the reason why "social marketing" tends, overall, to be of far greater interest to people who are promoting services to aspiring internet marketers than to anyone else.

I would say, start with the list first. Treat your subscribers with respect, provide great content, but remember to put your offer at the end of the e-mail Also, ask your subscribers to follow your fan page, and if you do provide value, they will do the rest

Do not ignore facebook for your email list. Just keep in mind however that the money is in the list. As great as facebook is, at the end of the day it is still there a list and not yours.

Thanks for all your comments , I thought facebook fans could replace an email list but it seems that just because I don`t open most of my emails anymore because i`ve signed up for that much stuff , (98000 emails) that is not the case for everyone.

Isn't it a worry that with Facebook all your eggs are in one basket? For instance if forever reason you have a problem with your autoresponder you can always take your list somewhere else...but if you have a problem with Facebook there is no real option.

I've always thought lists safer for that reason, though I admit not looking into it.

I agree that it's not good to have all your eggs in one basket. That is why you should do all the things it takes to have exposure. So, that's why I think email list and facebook is good. Also, twitter is a great tool for driving traffic if you use it right.

It's going to be a long time before email is obsolete. Converting your fans to email subscribers gives you two touch-points to reach them at and is the best scenario.

Your List is a hard asset, you control it, it is critical to build your email list.
Facebook page is one way to get them on your Opt-in. Use Iframe facebook app. You can do a page for people that haven't liked your page as well as one for those who has. Ideal to get people to like it, when they get something on the other site. From there try to get them on your email list.

    Both.. But List more important
With email list, you can direct them (in your mailing list) to your facebook page

I would do both.. Use Lujure.com to create a call to action landing page for your fanpage. Tell them if they like your page, they'll get to see an amazing video or something.

Once they like, ask them to supply their info to get access to the video (or whatever your giving away)

I have this setup on almost all my fanpages. Just a matter of getting traffic to them.

It's very possible to build a list using facebook though.. Best of luck

I never had or developed an e-mail list. Instead I do use facebook pages and I believe they are way better then e-mail lists. Some people stooped using e-mails and just use facebook for most thing they do or need online.

Email list! It takes more for people to join your email list, which results in a tighter communication and trust.

Email lists also convert a lot better.

I think that you need to do both. Facebook fans is a popularity contest and no matter how immature it is, popularity goes a long way with people. So if you have a lot of facebook page fans, it looks good, and you can get more followers that way. Also you can message the people who like your page.

I check my email when I sign up for people's email list, but I stop checking it if that person consistently doesn't offer anything of value (like good, helpful info, for instance). So consider VALUE when sending your emails, or your facebook messages for that matter. That is the only way you won't be ignored or deleted.

Attention is one of the most important things and if you offer VALUE you will get the attention you need. Also, that will build trust, respect, and rapport. Very important.

I would say depending on the niche.

I think the characteristics between email subscribers and FB fans are different,
so depending on your niche, you will have to one of them or both properly.

For example, if you are targeting teenage girls, probably FB fans are more suitable. On the other hand, if your targets are located in some countries cannot access Facebook, definitely you should not spend your time and money to build FB fans.

It's also important to think about competition. When I check my emails I am

    a) looking for work stuff
    b) checking information

give me a headline that will catch my interest and I will almost always be happy to ditch that stuff and read your email

BUT on Facebook you are competing with how drunk my best mate got last night, or what my ex is up to (ok, been years since I had an ex and my best mate is too sensible for his own good but you get my point). Fighting for interest in between funny photos of friends, interesting updates from people you care about, is, imo far harder.

Not that Facebook doesn't have a role - it has a massive one in fact, I find it very useful in my sports niches (where people have a vested emotion), but have found it less so in other niches (though I admit to not testing it fully by any stretch of the imagination, so take with a pinch of salt)

Yes, email marketing is dead.....didn't you know, facebook is where it's at....And how many EMAILS did you get this year saying that?

A lot of people will say email marketing is dead but I still open up emails for all of the marketers that gave me extreme value from the beginning. Email marketing and Facebook marketing is dead for marketers who just try to sell, sell and sell some more. Facebook will most likely have more people reading your broadcasts than email readers. I still say build your email list off of a Facebook fan page if you want to combine best of both worlds.

Two different animals. You must treat your Facebook Fans/Likes different than you would market to your email list. Both are required in this day and age with the power of Social Media.

Facebook shut down a page I built to over 6,000 fans. At the end of the day Facebook owns your page, but if you build an email list that is an asset you own that they cannot take away.

Use any pages you have to build your email list. Email Marketing IS NOT DEAD, not even close, and I say that despite being a huge advocate of social media. Every social media site requires an email address to sign up. Everyone has an email address.

Email marketing is essential for a successful online business, and smart marketers will recognize that they will be more successful if they build their business with an email list and a Facebook page. Use social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin and Google+ to build your list because the money is still in the list.

I agree. You better keep you mailing list and utilize your contacts there. Of course people still check on their e-mails especially if they find it really deserving to be checked on.
