I'm a little confused on this issue. I bought a generic domain site for the purpose of reviewing affiliate products. I've found my first niche. I installed wordpress for blogging. But, I'm not sure what my next step should be. Should I just use a subdomain or buy another domain just for that niche. My idea when I got the generic domain was to be able to review many different products on that domain. I'm just confused.

Could someone help?

Thanks

Hi, I think when you are targeting a specific Niche you will want your Domain name to reflect the Niche. I tend to harp a lot on keywords and it is best to have your keywords or exact Niche in your Domain name. I would get a new domain for your Niche.

For your review site you can use a subdomain or just a new folder with the title of the Niche. You can use the review as a way to promote your actual Niche site including links to the site.

Later if you decide to start other Niche sites do the same thing. Get a new domain with the Niche in the name and then review it on your review site.

That's the way I would do it.

will the new domains show up in the search engines even if they are forwarded? Or will the subdirectory show in the search engines?

whether you are using generic search engine or ppc, having tightly focused domain on one niche will be a great advantage.

With Wordpress, it is a snap to create various post reviews for different products. But make sure the theme is related.

Domain is the stronger of the two, both domain and subdomain if you can manage it

I also have a short generic domain name -- I have been using subdomains for my blogs. This seems to be working out well for me...I can easily incorporate specific keywords in the subdomain name without fear that the name is not available.

    Am I missing something?

I would use domains, if you can get enough keywords into the domains, they work fantastic for seo.

Getting a new domain for that niche will be helpful in many different ways.

However, if you plan to use the generic domain for creating sub domains in different niches:

    1. Do not link between the main domain and sub domain.
    2. Do not link between sub domains which are in different niches.

If you plan to use the generic domain, for creating sub domains all of which are in the same niche:

    1. Do not link between the main domain and sub domain, if the main domain has a different theme/topic/niche.
    2. Interlink between the sub domains.

If you want to do reviews of different products on your generic domain, do so, as long as you follow the above advice. Your main domain will not get penalized in anyway by Google. Nor will your sub domains be.

All these are applicable when you are starting out. Once your sites get some authority, you will have more leeway with the search engines.
