Does internet marketing work?

So I told someone I plan to quit work so I can make money online through affiliate marketing, and that person was all like "You're insane! Affiliate marketing doesn't work! The e-book that told you about making thousands of dollars online is a lie!"

Is this true? I find it absurd because it seems so many people have found success in the IM industry, but I'm a newbie who could very well be part of the 99,999 out of 10,000 that actually earn anything online.

Basically, my question is does IM/affiliate marketing actually work? Or is it just a pipe dream?

    Its not a lie!

there is lots of money to be made online but here's the thing.....

    it wont just happen...
it will take actual real work....
    you need to educate yourself....
and you would be foolish to ditch a paying job and just hope on a whim and a prayer that it will work out for you!

    Affiliate marketing absolutely works!

but dont drop your current income until you have learned about it and found something that fits in with your style and work ethic, your passion and your time constraints etc etc

I guess Im just saying - educate yourself and dip your toes in a little before you go for the triple flip dive! (if you get my meaning...lol)

The WF is a great place to learn a lot.

Good luck to you in whatever you do!

The thing is, I'm the kind of guy who goes all out whenever I set out to do something. That got me an arm that barely works (well, maybe not barely) because I once dedicated my life to martial arts. It seems to me that affiliate marketing takes a lot of effort to work anyway, so having a day job while at it could get me half-assed results for both.

    Does exercise work?

    Does investing work?

Does getting a college degree work?

Do jobs work? (I hear 90% of job-havers quit their first job within a year!)

    Does dating work?

IM definitely works, but it requires work on our part. If we're willing to put in efforts, then we'll reap the fruits of our labor later on.

The LIE is in the headlines from most IM products, promising you "quick, easy, fast, automated cash".

That's not real and if you just start out, then you need to look at a few weeks of a learning experience till you will see results.

It CAN be faster, it most probably will take longer.

I took 3 years to start making money online. My fault, I was lazy and didn't follow the x amount of courses I purchased.

That said, you ain't need 10 courses to succeed.

What you need is ONE good resource, a lot of dedication, focus and a great part of ACTION to get something ONLINE which actually can make you money.

    It's basically 3 things - OFFER => TRAFFIC => CONVERSION

Create those 3 and tweak them till it works. Oh and start with a product which is SELLING right now, then find a niche which will benefit from that product greatly.

I lost a lot of time looking for some hidden niches without any competition. Those don't exist or don't have any value.

If you like PM me, I have a site with a free Affiliate Training course.

Of course you can make money with internet marketing. BUT don't EVER quit your job just because you bought one eBook that says it will show you how to make 20k a month.

In the internet marketing industry there is soooo much fluff. So many people just saying oh yeah, 1 click here, 1 click there and you're rich. It's not like that. There is always work involved. The more work the better the outcome. Stay away from those fluff-filled eBook sellers.

I started Internet Marketing after I bought a $50 ebook. It was about online lead generation for the insurance industry. It was about 50 pages and I probably could have got more and higher quality information from a $30 book on Amazon, but I'm really glad that I bought that "overpriced" book.

I have a father and son insurance agency and I first used the knowledge to bring us new customers. I think that Internet marketing works best when you can leverage the skills and knowledge you have already and combine it with what you can do on the Internet.

Because of my time in the insurance industry picking the right keywords was easier for me than it would have been for those without that experience. Also, since at that time I talked to clients everyday I was able to pull more keywords and blogging topics from our conversations. I was also able to refine my website as I got daily feed back from prospective clients.

After I got pretty good at that, I decided to start generating leads for other agents. I still have the agency, but spend most of my time marketing my websites.

They are mostly insurance-related sites, but I'm rapidly gaining the confidence to branch out into other areas. This forum is one of my biggest sources of information.

I now have a small library of books on SEO, HTML, PHP, MySQL, etc. Over the last six or so years my knowledge has increased to the point where IM may now be what I know best and can make the most money with.

So, yes you can make money on the Internet, but you will have to study, work hard and put both money and time at risk. Fortunately, you don't have to put a lot of money at risk; it is mainly about learning and doing.

    Good luck!

I only have enough budget to buy domains, so adwords is a no go. Is SEO a viable option? I already know quite a bit about keyword research, so I do believe I can get my pages ranking in no time.

I am sure the guy who told you that it doesn't work read a crappy eBook promising lots of $$$ with a "Push Button" software.

Yes it works but it requires hard work. IM is a carrear not a Job. When you have a Job you are constantly looking at tthe clock waiting for 4:30pm so you can go home. A carrear there is just no enough hours in a day to do all the stuff you gotta do. Great thing is there is a lot of money to be made but you will work 4 times harder specially if you are starting out. Yes there is freadom as I have no boss over my shoulder threating me with fire me if the **** doean't get dome but I work more on IM as a result I make way more $$.

Your mindset is wrong. You might as well say that you plan on quitting your job to start practicing medicine.

Do not quit your job because you think you have a bright future in affiliate marketing. Quit your job when you have a bright present in marketing.

Marketing online is not something that will bring you riches just because you read an ebook. Sure, it can bring you riches, but you have to work for it.. and that work starts with learning and training.

Online marketing is a career choice. It's not something that you do instead of working.

Here is your plan of attack:

    1. Decide what it is that you would like to be doing online and then learning as much about that one thing as possible.

    2. Educate yourself.

    3. Make a game plan and execute it.

    4. Fail.

    5. Figure out why you failed and fix it.

    6. Execute again.

You have to read that guide from EBR, really good and shows you that you can use Internet Marketing in MANY ways, different that most think that the world ends after Clickbank.

It's a form of marketing to the masses with a minimum of investment.

But you need knowledge to get there, to know how the system works.

Does it clearly say how to make a $500,000 business in one day? Not to sound too skeptical or anything, but that's quite a big statement, to say the least.

Sound advice. All are equally important steps. and regardless of how broke you are, or regardless of how much you know or don't know, find ways to continue executing on your methods. And repeat these steps.

I can sense the sarcasm in your post. Perhaps you should read the report. Yes, it is possible and well documented, but it didn't happen because I woke up one day and decided I was going to start a business. I had the experience to seize an opportunity that fell in my lap.

Listen: If you are just starting don't quit your job. Do this on the side until you figure out what works for you.

IM is not a get rich operation. It takes time and money to get started. My suggestion to you is to read, read, read. You won't buy a eBook and become a know it all marketer. It takes ups and downs to figure things out for yourself. You can not be afraid to try different ways to market. If you are only doing a few backlinks a day you will not get anywhere.

This may sound strange, but one of the best ways to succeed with affiliate marketing is to be a product owner.

This is because you will then be promoting to people you already have a relationship with and have proven they are buyers.

I started off internet marketing like most other people buying products that promised riches overnight.

The change came when I realized that the real money was being made by people selling their own products.

So my advice would be to start creating your own product, build a list of buyers and then you can sell more products to them whether it be yours or affiliate products.

It takes work, but so does everything in life that has any value.
Start viewing yourself as a business, and sell your own products.

    Hey,

I was asking myself the same question not too long ago. I have come to the conclusion that I should keep my current job until I make at least 50% of my current income on a consistent basis.

Having no cash flow would be a major problem for any business, and yes, I am treating IM like a business. I need to keep my cash flow coming until my IM business can start generating cash flow on its own.

The obvious huge advantage of quitting is that you will have a lot more time, but I bet very little of that free time for actually be used for IM. I find myself spending my free time with family, friends, watching TV, and playing video games. I am currently trying to come up with a schedule where I dedicate a certain amount of time to IM per week, and what course of action I must take per week.

The idea is that once I do that, I can scale it and dedicate my time to generating additional times streams of income.

Hi, absolutely it works and i am living proof of this. It can work for ANYONE with an ounce of determination but don't be fooled in to thinking it's EASY though. Internet marketing is simple BUT it's not easy. There's a lot to learn.

You may struggle to earn full time living just with affiliate marketing. Really you want to be doing both. Your own products and affiliate marketing in between.

I just wrote a FREE ebook for my subscribers called "Every Newbie's Dream" that will help you a lot. You can find it at my blog - Internet Marketing With Kerry Russell - No optin just free content.

Give it a read and by the time you have finished it you will have an answer to this thread.

Yes Internet Marketing, Affiliate Marketing, Selling Online, call it what you will does work. But as others have said it does work. You need to take action, and do regular work on your business.

Yes you will need to educate yourself. Find a few mentors. You will have successes and failures. But as long as you pick yourself up after a fall, and say what did I learn from that mistake you will do well.

But please do not give up your job yet. This business can be done in an evening, lunchtime, before work and at weekends. Build your business bit by bit and once the income is more than your job, and it stays like that for several months, then and only then think about giving up a well paid job.

Have a plan, work the plan, and you will go far in this industry.

Do not quit work to pursue Internet Marketing unless you are independently wealthy. It is foolish to go from a job to ZERO income to pursue something that you may or may not make money with.

A lot of newbies NEVER MAKE A DIME. A lot take years before they get it. Do not fall for ebooks that promise fast, easy money. Successful IM'ers build a sustainable business and you aren't even close to that point yet.

Quit your job if you want to when you have enough in the bank to live off of for a year.

To me,I think that you have to ask yourself whether it works. There are people who are not starting off with the right mindset and ended up making a little or no money, they can tell you it don't work and the gurus are just making a lie out of it.

If you have seen evidence, people who are really enjoying financial freedom just by internet marketing. You will have to believe that it actually work. This would work if you are willing to treat it seriously and let it grow throughout the years by consistently improve it.

I have read one book on online marketing and there is one quote saying"Doing an online business is a process and not a project"

To conclude, the book is trying to say there are no deadlines and there are no limits of improving.

The moment I realised that IM (i.e. making a living on the Internet) is hard work, things got better. Combined with the viewpoint that what you do is building up a business, not just websites, you can earn serious money on the Internet.

    Three things:

Do you really think there would be a forum of this size with this much activity if there was no success to be had in IM? (Just something to consider...)

IM/affiliate marketing does'nt work. People do - they learn the ropes, take action, and make it happen. It's not some magical thing. Most don't grasp this and give up far too soon.

99,999 out of 10,000? Wow! Figure out how to do that, market it, and you'll be rich in no time! (Sorry, couldn't resist!)

You will not earn at first, this much is true. You will need to learn yourself a lot of things before you actually produce any profit. Don't think that if you know a couple of things about websites and the internet in general, the IM will work for you.

Not everybody makes it in this business. Its just like any other career, some work for you and some don't. Figure this out before you quit your job.

i just want to say this.

in this world, lots of things [which includes IM] is not as straight forward as u think.

    ie : its not "2+2=4"

    everything in theory is dead.

only when u go from theory to practical then u start to see live stats and results, from there u analyze and optimize and do it again, get stats again. then analyze and make changes, optimize then do it again.

i may have done step 1, then 2, then 3 then i get $1k , but i may tell u to do those and u may still end up not getting 1k, maybe u need step 4. or 2b. get it?

its not that simple as "oh so and so said do this... so i did, next week i want to be a millionaire because so and so is a millionaire. "

if i am that kind of person honestly, i will get job.

Do yourself a favor and don't listen to the haters (your friends, family...). They all talk mess until they start seeing the money coming in and ask you to borrow some. Trust me. I speak from experience. Just decide on what path you want to take, and invest in a legit training program. Then, dedicate yourself to gaining the knowledge and skills you need to make it for you for. It's that simple.

Thanks a lot for the inspiring replies, guys!

How soon can I start earning money? I've been studying vehemently for the past month, and right now my gameplan is to set up a bunch of minisites focused on specific products. I have no problems about SEO and conversions, but I've previously done work for people who already established themselves and only only needed a boost. I'm starting from scratch, and I don't know if I will actually see sales numbers for myself in a month or two.

Hard work and working smart is not an issue for me. As I said, I can dedicate myself to one thing and put my 100% in it - that's why I want to quit my work for IM. Also, not to lift my own chair or anything, but I've always been one of the level-headed guys wherever I go.

I think your plan for using SEO only to put up affiliate minisites is weak. Google is not receptive to this idea at all. You should read up a bit on what's actually going on in SEO and refine your plan.

It is good you have a game plan, and that is a key to success in IM if you stick to it long enough. At the beginning of my career in IM, I've investigated several avenues myself, and consulted credible people in the industry. I was directed to check out several coaches and courses online. The ones that I put trust in are the ones that will tell me that I have to learn a lot, experiment and implement a lot of things before getting results.

When I've discovered that Facebook was a good traffic source not long ago, my first attempts at driving traffic from Facebook (FB) went terribly wrong and FB blocked me a few times from the site. When I contacted FB they where very understanding and explained to me my mistakes and how to avoid them. I've learned a lot over the last 5 years in Internet Marketing and where I learned the most valuable know how, was through my mistakes like my debut with Facebook.

Today, I still follow courses to learn new trends in IM, I still experiment and implement new systems and I still do mistakes all the time. Just keep applying yourself and do not give up. As you have seen from the many replies you've got, there is money to be made, just don't stop.

      Hi Everyone

Great points raised here . Everything in theory is easy. Want to win an olympic medal? Train hard for four years, qualify for the final. Run faster than everyone else.

In reality it's a different matter. Affiliate Marketing in theory is easy. Market someone else's product for them and get paid a commision on everyone you sell. Repeat the process. Buy a Ferrari.

In reality this is a fulltime job, with hard work required. Can it be rewarding. Yes. Can you make money. Yes, but only if you understand that it is something you need to learn about . Then put into practice. For the record I spent a few years going round the houses. Spent too much time learning and not enough time doing. When I finally figured that out, the money came.

Wishing you all the best. I hope it works for you.

It absolutely works! There are many people out there today that are making great money online. If you have the drive and passion to make it work for you then you can make it a reality.

However, if you currently have a job I would not recommend quitting just yet. This is not an overnight riches business. You can easily start while you have the comfort of your job and build your business into a stable growing enterprise. Then you can walk away from your job and live the life you are dreaming of.

All real people making real money working real hard. Simple as that. It's real business that must be run like real business. The challenge comes from those who think they don't have to do a darned thing and then wonder why they are not making money.

You can put up affiliate minisites, but also try and see if you can collect email addresses as well. Because the truth is that hardly anyone buys anything the first time. So if you can get people on the list, you at least have a chance to start building a relationship with them and later on promote products as an affiliate.

I would concentrate on getting my sites ranked first and then I would monetize them.

As stated above Google is not really a fan of the "mini-site" syndrome.

Google want you to provide good quality information that visitors want to see. Not just a one page quick review with a few hyperlinked images and anchor texts here and there.

If you spend time building these sites and monetizing them from the get go you may never get them to rank if Google sees them as worthless.

Take your time and build sites that can branch out to cover different aspects of the Brandname.

for example : if you want to promote a certain JVC HDTV don't just concentrate on the one HDTV.
Provide info about the company itself, their past, present and future. Post about any new developments within the company and link out to relative sites and blogs (ping backs).
Relate to previous models and list comparisons. Provide images and tag them appropiately with product name keyword.
Update the site regularly with fresh info and of course provide product reviews for anything that JVC bring to the (affiliate) marketplace.

In essence you start to create a mini authority site, which if handled correctly could start ranking your sites pages and posts for your chosen keywords, and becomes a single source of multiple affiliate sales instead of one site for each product you want to promote.

Evertime JVC release a new product you will be there providing the same good quality information as always..... that's the sort of thing Google wants.

Your backlinking campaign should also be solid, but do not be afraid to link out to relevant sites and posts.
Google make changes every now and then, but you will never be "punished" for linking out to a source of good quality information that would be a benefit to your sites visitors.
I do believe that they would eventually frown, and rectify the results from sites that only have one way incoming links.
After all it's not really natural is it?
Just like all the web 2.0 profiles that have been created and are, in most cases, never ever visited again by the creator. Hhhmmm do you think that Google won't notice this?

Whatever you do just make sure you can rank, monetize and survive a couple of Google updates.....Repeat.......Repeat>>>>>>> THEN you will know if IM works good enough to quit your day job.

      Good Luck

      Dave

Try it our for yourself, Internet Marketing does work but there are a few things you need to know to bee successful.

First you need to be educated in the industries you wan't to work with, example, Affiliate Marketing.

Then you need to take consistent action, on a day to day basis.

Without these key concepts it becomes impossible for someone to earn online, like any job, you have to do something to get paid.

First decide how you want to make money online.
There a bunch of different ways.
Email Marketing, Affiliate Marketing, PPC, stuff like that.

After you decide find a decent course that teaches you, make sure it's not a scam. Then take consistent action, and you will make money online

Internet marketing most definitely works. The problem is very few people actually put in the time and effort it takes to be successful. They fall for the get rick quick scams that promise you can make $10,000 in 30 days by pushing a few buttons. Once they realize it takes more than pushing a few buttons they give up and say it doesn't work.

There are plenty of people, me included, who make a good living with internet marketing. I personally haven't worked a "job" in almost 10 years. But its not easy. You have to be dedicated and disciplined. You will have to do things that you probably don't want to do until you can afford to outsource them. But if you stick with it, you will be successful.

You can't let what others think get to you. My family didn't believe in me at first but once they saw I was making good money, they jumped right on the wagon. The truth is, you can do anything you want to do if you are willing to pay the price to make it happen. In this case that price will be spending a lot of time on the internet promoting your affiliate sites.

IM is a full time commitment just like any other job or project, it will take up most of your time and dedication to reach realistic goals. You first of all have to know what you want to achieve, then plan on how you are going to achieve it. The ebook that said you'll be a millionaire overnight was most propably a lie yes, but thats why you have forums like this one.

Learn as much as you can from people that have achieved succes here at the forum and I'm more than sure that with some motivation, dedication and the will to be one of the succes stories your pipe dream will turn into reality.

Stay motivated, keep learning and keep working hard!

But that was when I used to just read about different ways of making money online, but I would never implement what I had learned.

Now, if you ask me today, I would say it works if you work it.

Because, in the last 3 years or so, I started implementing what I had learned and now I am making more than I ever made with any offline jobs I have ever had.

If you are willing to actually work and consider it a real business it will work. It wont be quick or easy, it will take time and a lot and I mean a lot of handwork, but it will happen if you keep working. Good luck.

It does work, I quit my job and now do it from home, BUT, you absolutely MUST NOT give up your job until you've learned how to do it and are actually making money from it yourself.

It took me several years to reach the point I could leave work, and a hefty chunk of luck as well, as it's a steep learning curve and hard work (yes, it's still work and won't happen overnight or easily).

If you're new to it and don't know exactly what it's all about it will be a huge mistake to quit your job first. Use the money you earn from your job to fund your learning (but don't buy anything that's promising instant riches as it really doesn't work that way, and especially avoid 'push-button' software products). From a personal viewpoint, don't get involved with matrices either, they're money pits and absolutely never do what you're told they will do.

It will cost you some money to learn and master the aspects of it you'll grow to like, but you don't need to spend huge amounts of money (I didn't), and you need to be selective about what you spend it on. First up, learn about it from forums like this, ask questions, read as much free information as you can and don't run until you can walk.

Almost every strategy in Internet marketing is the same as the traditional approach. If there are billboards, posters, and banners posted on buildings and other establishments, there are also banners, billboards and posters positioned on the top, bottom, and sides of a website.

For a more direct marketing approach, online marketing utilizes electronic mail or e-mail. It is more like the traditional brochure, flyer, or newsletter companies hand out. It gives businesses the chance to communicate directly and instantly with their target market.

Another Internet marketing style is the Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, which is considered to be one of the most efficient. Through content-based offerings, SEO companies assure business owners a place on the first page of search engines like Google and Yahoo. A first page ranking means maximum exposure because most surfers click the web pages on the first page of a search result.

To let websites reach top ranks on search engine results, SEO firms create fresh and unique articles for them. The unique content can give the business a top rank on the front page of search engines. It can also earn the respect of clients, which can increase the business' earnings.

Internet marketing works but it takes a lot of your time at the "starting out" phrase. I believe most people failed because they do not have patience and there are too many Guru's out there showing off their Ferraris and private jets flying across the globe to get to their private clubs just for breakfast.

most people falls for that and when it doesn't work, they gave up. We as human being are very smart and because of the intelligence, we tends to look for short cuts.

My friend, trust me, there are no short cut to anything. I still remember, I have a website on diet niche which rank page 1 position 1 on Google multiple countries with medium competitive keyword (about 12k exact match) that will make a lot of niche marketer drool.

Now, Do I make any money? Honestly, NO! Nada! 0 = my income!!!!!!!! I was so upset and then I decided to forget what I've learned from the so call Gurus and the make $125K a week plans, unsubscribe ALL the get rich with 3 push button strategies emails and calm myself down.

I began to schedule my time, browse the internet and spy on my competitor and then I took their ideas and apply , failed! test again a different one, failed again, again, again, and again and again and exactly 5-1/2 months later I made my FIRST sales. The rest is history.

What I'm trying to say here is to advise all the newcomers is - There are lots of money lying on the table in Affiliate Marketing. You only need to know how to go and get it. Everyone work in a different way so find a suitable method that suites you. If you failed, try again and again and again until you success.

The Most competitive keyword for your success is " PATIENCE"
    Wish you all the best

    Hi
I agree with Kym Robinson, you have to approach this as a business, most businesses do not make anything in the first year, break even in the second year and make a small profit in the third year so using this as a basis you will know how long it takes to build a business unless you can buy a ready made business on flippa whilst you learn other methods of marketing.

I agree there has been some great posts and solid advice, the warrior forum can be a great place to get genuine advice from other more experienced warriors.

I think one of the greatest challenges when trying to learn how to make money online is finding quality information amongst the masses of garbage. This is why people (who aren't in the know) are so sceptical. They believe it does not work and they are almost right, 99% of programs out there promising the world do not work they are either scams or outdated or half truths.

The challenge is finding the right information to educate yourself with and then implement.

If you are serious about making money online my best advice for you is this.

The number one most important quality for success in this game is PERSEVERANCE.
