Is publishing articles to so many directories really that effective?

I have been having some good success with my articles lately. I have submitted tons of them with the submitter softwares, to 100's of different directories at once(Well not quite at once, but you know what I mean), and I have went the other route as well, only submitting to the top 4 or 5.
Honestly, my best success has come when I only submit to a few of the really good ones. I actually get ranked on search engines and make sales with way fewer articles, as opposed to when I would take the extra time to use the software and submit to all kinds of Article Directories , that create virtually no results.It seems that submitting to a bunch forgettable directories is only good for backlinks. And even those arent that great, I mean many of them probably wont even be around in a year or so, will they?Are those backlinks really worth all the work?

So is it Quality or Quanity?

Check your Google Analytics and see how many of those sites bring in traffic to your site. Not many for me. I would spend time focusing your well written articles on the top article directories only. Most importantly make sure the quality of the articles is compelling. I know for a fact I will not read crappy written articles. I don't have time. So you have to think that other web users will probably be the same way. I spend a little more money getting my articles written well and making them hypnotic.

Quantity may get you backlinks and a slightly high postion in search results but it all comes back to quality. You can get to that position in the SERPS, but if the article is written bad, people will back out of that site like they smelled cat urine.

Yep, thats kind of what I was thinkin. I appreciate the feed back guys.
And honestly, I just cant see how backlinks from lowgrade websites can be that effective.
