I don't think anything is going to change. PR companies employing people to sway the public opinion one way or another is a tactic that has been around long before forums came along.

For example, they would hire people that called the radio and expressed their opinion, of course, beneficial to the client. Radios would then assume it's something that public really thinks and broadcast that as public opinion.

Or, in newspapers editors used to receive letters from "concerned citizens", who, in fact, were paid by a PR agency, or, in case of Soviet Union by the party.

Some things will change. For instance, there's still a big difference between then and now. For instance, it's a whole lot easier for someone even with basic google-fu and a good head on their shoulders to call liars out on their bull**** since they have access to so much more information at their fingertips. The increasing decentralization of authority we see over the years also appears to have some sort of linear relationship with the growth of the internet. I mean, who're you gonna believe when everyone claims to be an "expert"? I swear, the day after Google+ was launched, I must've seen at least 10 different people on the internet claim to be "experts" at working it and generating +1's.

Truth is a funny kind of thing. People used to say, it must be true, I heard it on the news on TV. Now, it is more like, it must be true I read it online.

The internet itself is kind of funny overall. The OP is writing about a perfectly SEO'd linkbait article on another site which is an edited compilation of abstracts from various other sources. And that page is covered with advertisements.

No offense intended, it is just the way the web is structured. And it makes it hard sometimes to figure out what really happened.

The tactics aren't new, just a newer place that they are occurring. I thought most were aware of this kind of thing by now? I mean, it's the internet. Take everything you read with a grain of salt and pray your common sense doesn't fail you.

I agree, these tactics have been a round a lot longer than the Internet, It's called taking a short cut. There will always be certain people trying to benefit from the work of others, or trying to get a head of the pack without putting in the same effort. I doubt they will bring down the Internet in anyway, other than the Google type updates we get from time to time.

@littledan I agree completely. They are usually just a nuisance. Now sometimes they can be a very large nuisance, and ruin certain websites that were not prepared to defend/police these kinds of idiots. The internet as a whole though? Too big to fail! (Wait a minute, why does that phrase sound familiar?) Oh lord, THE INTERNET IS COLLAPSING.

lying has been it's own industry in the US for all of history with people migrating to settle the west selling their magic health potions through tv infomercials to the internet. Trying to make a fast buck will pay some bills today but a well built business will pay the bills forever and short cuts don't make a good business.

While there is definitely a lot of gaming and outright cheating in every accept of Internet marketing, such developments as Panda and the tightening of certain social networks is making it increasingly more difficult for those who choose the easy -- but eventually fruitless path.

However, there are some really great, honest individuals in marketing both online and off that promote quality services to their clients.

Many are members of this forum.

I hold the same viewpoint of the Internet. It is an enigma to say the least; a platform to spread both innovation and misinformation at blazing speeds. The fact that they occur side by side (and often crisscross) seems to cross few minds if any at all.

I think that this form of shadow marketting can be very efficitive if done covertly and correctly. Does this make it right and ethical? I think its on the border and I have not done this for many years. However "seed planting" can be very effictive as it allows the idea to grow semi-organic like.

A subject is talked about becuase its important and its important because its talked about.

yes unfortunately the fake forum comments will always exist as it is now considered a viable method of traffic creation. but the comments that make money are the ones that offer real content for the reader.
