Change of Site Adress

I have a site I want to change the URL for. The site isn't really ranking, the only thing is I've contributed a reasonable amount of original content and it's got a few decent back links. But it's too specific for me.

I'm trying to figure if it's worth moving it. Whats the best option?

I'll have to 301 direct all the articles, and try and change where my back links are pointed, and of course inform the search engines.

If I don't the only negative is that the two sites will have duplicate content.

Can anyone advise?

It would help to have some more information. Is this a wordpress site? If so, it's easy to move with WP Twin (and I'd be happy to help you if you want, just PM me).

if it's not a WP site, it's still easy enough to move.

Depending on your set-up, there are other options, including a quick and dirty redirect to the site from your domain registrar, though that may not be optimal for a variety of reasons.

I'd move it to the new site, and then maybe start adding a bunch of more content to the new site, and maybe rewrite some of the content on the old site... or substitute other stuff on there.

    Hope this helps.

duplicate content isn't really a penalty as long as you credit the original.

    my advice...

leave the old site open and start the new one with the more specific stuff you want to write about.

the search engines will trip out if you duplicate the whole site overnight... so i would reccomend going slowly, starting the new site, and interlinking them.

better to have two feet in the market than one.

Technically, you can't change an existing domain name. But you can register a better one and "website redirect" to the new one.

Ask your hosting company how it is done. They'll assist you with this better.

Yep that's what I've done - just wondering about the practicalities of it...

      Thanks for your responses...

I'll think I'll just leave the site up...I'm just not sure about redirecting those back links...

It does help - sorry I managed to misspell 'address' in the title...If a mod sees that please change it...:-(

It's on WP - the sites moved, I didn't know about the plugin, I'll look into that...

So there's no need to worry about the same content on the old site, and my decent backlinks from ezine etc. and a couple of hand placed .edu, should I point them to the new site...?

I haven't got enough ranking on the old site to worry
