Wordpress Free sub domain Vs. Purchased Domain Name

I want to start using wordpress to set up niche sites. If I do everything the right way with keywords and content. How much does it matter with the search engines if I use the free domain from wordpress verses a domain that is paid. For example: MySite.wordpress.com or MySite.com from a paid host.

Your blogs will last no time at all on wordpress.com, because you'd be breaching their terms of service. They delete anything commercial/monetized on sight. It's for "hobby bloggers" only.

I have seen two presentations on using wordpress to set up niche sites but in each video they used a purchased domain name. So does a purchased a domain give you the ability to use links to affiliate products. Keep in mind the product is not the focus of the site just the keyword with an anchor link to the product. So the site would not be commercial just informative with anchor text links.

So my question still is does it matter with search engine ranking if the free option for a domain is used or is it better to use the purchased domain as far as getting page one on google.

No - that's perfectly safe from the "getting banned" perspective. You're doing nothing wrong at all, there. It's only hosting at wordpress.com that means nothing monetized/commercial is allowed at all. If you're hosting your own Wordpress blog on your own self-hosted site at Hostgator or wherever, you get to make your own rules about how you monetize your site, because you own it yourself. Their "nothing commercial" and other rules apply to using their hosting-site, not to using their software on your own site, as you're (wisely) doing.

      And good luck!

That still breaches Wordpress's terms of service, and I believe your site will be taken down as soon as it's noticed. I appreciate that you don't think it's commercial, doing it that way. Unfortunately, though, as many Warriors can attest to, that isn't how Wordpress looks at it, if the link is to something from which you're rewarded in any way for sales. Im "just saying".

I appreciate your help so far I getting a better picture of how this should be done. I see now that there is a wordpress.com and a wordpress.org that has the software to download and be used with hosting. I think this is where I got mixed up at. To use wordpress, I was thinking that you needed to use the free sub domain or purchase a domain name and everything had to be host by wordpress. Thanks for being patient and answering my question.

Alexa's correct on this, monetizing a free-hosted blog on wordpress.com is a very tough thing to do and expect any longevity. Far better to spend a few dollars for a domain and a basic hosting account. Not only can you monetize to your heart's content, but YOU OWN and CONTROL the site and aren't subject to the whims of another company. If a few dollars is too much to spend on the project, then it isn't worth doing anyway.

Thanks for the feedback Pat I get it now. I have hosting with 1and1 so that's not a problem. I am new to worpress and got confused by the free wordpress blog site and setting up a hosting account using the wordpress software. You always hear that you can get a free site using wordpress, but I never knew unless you host your own domain that you could not set it up the way you want to be.

I understand the confusion. Wordpress is free whether you host it or not. You can go to wordpress.com and create a free-hosted Wordpress blog. Or you can go to wordpress.org, download Wordpress and set it up on your own host. The latter is ALWAYS better than the former for a site that you're going to monetize. I would only put time into Wordpress.com sites if they were designed to generate traffic and/or backlinks to my own hosted sites.

If you're in for the long term, never use a free third party host for your sites. Buy a domain and hosting and build them. Wordpress is NON-commercial and will delete your blogs if they are commercial. Squidoo has deleted a lot of lenses. Blogger is notorious for deleting blogs. It's not worth the money you save if your plan is having a money site to earn from.
