After reading several threads about the "duplicate content myth" I have a question about scraped content. I'm wanting to add a Glossary of Terms to my website. Unfortunately I have picked a niche that I have little knowledge of so had no choice but to look at other websites that contain a Glossary of terms to give me an idea of the terms I need to include. But I'm finding it very difficult to re-word it.

so, would I be able to simply copy that glossary for myself without having to re-word it? (I'm guessing probably not).

If the owner of that glossary gave me permission to copy it as long as I placed a back-link to his website, would google still penalise me?

If I do need to re-word it, what percentage of the article/glossary will need to be changed roughly?

Am I better off getting someone to do it for me?

Thanks.

My understanding is that Google won't penalize you for having duplicate content, but that the content isn't recognised as unique and won't have as much of an impact when backlinking from it.

I try to think about what I'd do if I ran a major search engine with a focus on natural link building.
Maybe I would penalize you if you were trying to manipulate the search results by using copy+pasted articles and throwing in a few backlink, but I definitely wouldn't for a single duplicate page.

Note: Don't take what I say too seriously - I'm fairly new to the SEO/IM game, so would pay to wait for someone with a bit more experience to either confirm or argue against my post

I think your statement say it all "Unfortunately I have picked a niche that I have little knowledge". Do you have an interest in it? If not I suggest you hire writers to create engaging content that adds value to the subject. Great content is the way to go according to Google.

If the terms are so specific that you can't rewrite them in a natural way, Offering a downloadable Glossary and a basic e-book might be an alternative. In this way you avoid the duplicate content, and add definitions into the copy as needed.

There are few bits of text that cannot be rewritten but if you have run across that piece then this is probably the idea to get you past it.

If you do decide to use someone else's Glossary, make sure you have permission or you will get most likely get a DMCA notice to take it down.

What if the person rewrites the whole content, will they still get a DMCA notice?

Probably not. It probably wouldn't come under their radar if it were completely reworded.

50 would be good. This is just a glossary though, right? If I had permission to use it, I most likely would just use it as is. I wouldn't put much effort into a glossary. I assume that's not your most important content.
