TIP: It's very wise to assume that every image you find online is copyrighted. So, no, you can't just go to Google and grab images for commercial purposes.

You need to buy a license to use images.

Go to a stock photo site -- I use Dreamstime among others -- Stock Photography: Download Free Stock Photos & Royalty Free Images and buy a license to the images you want to use.

There are many free image sites too, and of course Flickr images with a Creative Commons license -- flickrCC - macro

When you're using "free" images, read the licensing carefully, and give attribution.

I'm not totally sure on copywrite relating to images. It would be pretty hard to monitor i guess. Of course if you use a well known branded images on your site they will probably find out and could make life difficult for you.

To avoid all that risk you can select images in google then use the following format in the search box.

    health fitness +public domain

by adding the +public domain, in your search term it will only return images that are available on the public domain, which means they are available for anyone to use.

I think you would be surprised at how easy it is to monitor photos.

Your suggestion does not remove "all risk." It just means Google indexed a photo and happened to catch, for whatever reason, 'public domain' as part of your search.

It does NOT mean the picture is in the public domain.

Maybe it is. But you need to review the website the picture is on to evaluate your rights.

You can find images from istock or one of the other image sites.

You're asking for trouble if you just grab an image from google or somewhere due to copyright issues.

Its simple, you can not use any image unless you:
    1) Own the copyright to the image
    or
    2) Have explicit permission of the copyright owner
    or
    3) Purchased the right to use the image

    No this is not allowed.

One of the easiest ways for you to find free pics you can use for your websites is to go to CC Search and enter your term, such as "fitness". Then click on the Google Images tab, or any of the others shown. You will notice that underneath the search box there are 2 check-boxes: "use for commercial purposes" and "modify, adapt, or build upon." Make sure those are checked. A gallery of images loads up and you can select one from there

    - HOWEVER - there can still be creative common stipulations attached to that image such as giving credit to the author, ect..

There are also plenty of photo-stock sites where you can find very high quality images for just a bit of cash. It may be worth a few bucks if it really sets your header apart.

    Good luck!

It's just been explained to you. Plagiarise at your peril. Why cry over spending a few dollars/pounds on a stock photo which will mean peace of mind.

If you were lucky enough for your site to grow big, it will only attract more attention, meaning any copyright infringement has a better chance of being noticed.

There are million upon million of copyright free images swimming about on the net. Use your common sense.

Be real careful about believing everything that you're reading in this thread.

There are a bunch of royalty free image sites online, some of whom have been mentioned already in this thread. The ones I frequent the most are:

      istockphoto
      dreamstime
      fotolia
      123rf

At most of these sites you can purchase web graphics for a few dollars a piece. My caution comes from the fact that all these sites and most other similar ones on the Internet have distribution limitations. Even though you can buy an image for your own use, where and how you are allowed to use and/or display that image most often times has restrictions.

You might want to use the image on a web site, in an ebook, in a display advertisement, or on a tee shirt. Yet all of these uses might be considered different kinds of distribution. So you have to check every photo you purchase "rights to" in order to see if your use conforms to the image seller's policy for distribution.

Sometimes these dollar images could cost you $250 to distribute in an ebook, for example.

The safe approach is to always check the details of allowed uses for your specific plan for distributing or displaying that particular image and then pay the appropriate fee.

      Good luck,

      Steve
