Some Questions on list building :)

Hey everyone,

I had several questions about "List Building"
Creating a new thread for them was best I felt

(These questions are mainly for the IM niche, maybe other niches as well...)

1) I believe a blog adds value to your site but is it best to have the blog as a main page and have a smaller area on the side for optin or is it better to have the mainpage as an optin and the blog on a secondary page?

2) People speak a lot of "one time offers" - is it a good thing to have it offered in the process of the initial signup for newsletter or would that scare people away? What is the right time & place for a OTO?

3) As a freebie I thought of having a quality report written and/or a 5 part video course and that they get a video a day... should I offer both, or one of them? what would be the best approach on this?

4) Is it best to send something daily to your subscribers (lot's of quality content of course) or every 2-3 days? what are your thoughts on this?

5) I feel to start out the best thing to get going is to buy some traffic... What is the best place to buy your first traffic? I know there are many, some are good and other are not... so I was a little confused.

6) Is it really possible to make some money with a list in the IM niche? Even if you don't know that much about it? By just making a list and keeping them happy and promote some stuff that sells?

Thanks everyone!

V

Interesting post which will spark plenty of debate I'm sure.

Here's my quick opinion on the questions you pose.

    1. Yes, a blog can help you sure enough. Quality, relevant content can't hurt. My personal preference would be to have the opt-in box at the top of the right hand sidebar so it's seen on each page view and have a short description as to why they should opt-in/what they'll get.

    2. One time offers are generally used in the sales process. After you have bought product X for say $10 before you get to download it you'll be presented with a "one time offer" to gently (?) persuade you to part with some more money. Perasonally I wouldn't use one as part of the opt-in process though there's nothing wrong with trying to monetise your download page with a couple of relevant affiliate deals.

    3. I'd say give them both. Value.

    4. Personally (again) I wouldn't hit them too fast with too much stuff.Your five-part course delivered say every couple of days would be about right I'd say.

    5. Never gone down the paid traffic route. If you wanted to get your toe in the water there are hundreds of people on Fiverr.com selling Twitter/Facebook blasts.

    Hope this helps,

    Andy.

    Thanks Andy, great advice..

I just added a 6th question and at them same time you responded so you missed that.

The other questions you answered so nicely... what you think about promoting the IM Niche?

      Hi,

Again, just a personal opinion, IM is such a wide niche. You might do some research in to seeking to zero-in on a relatively undiscovered sub-niche within IM or move away and look at other niches.

A matter of personal choice I'd say.

      Thanks,

      Andy.

Hi, just writing about point number 5, I think you have the correct idea about buying some traffic to kickstart your business. Obviously it depends on your budget, but I recommend safe-swaps.com, as I if I am correct, you can purchase 100 clicks (niot subscribers) for $20.00.

Looks like most answers were addressed above except for #6...

I was actually discussing this with a student of mine earlier today...

    The short answer is YES

You do not need to be an expert of raking in 6 figures a month to have a successful and happy list.

I tend to email my subscribers everyday with good stuff and I sprinkle in promos to pay my bills. So the key is finding a happy medium where you can make money and they still get value by being on your list.

Treat them like a human and your friend and you will have great success

I'm going to add to #6 that Coby confirmed.

There is more to Internet Marketing than just the Internet. You can be a graphic designer, website designer, copywriter, direct response expert, outsourcer and many other skills in the IM niche and still offer useful, relevant information.

Thanks for all the replies guys!

So I think I understand but please correct me if I'm wrong

I setup a blog with some blog posts
Have a squeezepage with optin with a free worthy gift
have this all on the IM niche in general, no specific area just plain IM
become a member of some more forums
have some interesting stuff in my sig that leads to my site
go to a site like safe-swaps and buy some solo adds
later on when I have enough people on list do some ad swaps
give people on list lots of awesome content
every 3 emails or so but in some affiliate links and offers
put in some WSO affiliate links as well sometimes

That's a pretty general outline but I would try to do everything into perfect detail and make it all very smooth running..

is this the idea? are people actually gonna go for all this and spend money?

    Hi V

I think you have the right idea, but I would just say a couple of things.

    1. I'm not sure of what level you are on in Internet Marketing, but I will assume you are a beginner, because you did mention you don't know much about the IM niche.

    - If this is the case I would say stay away from paid traffic in the beginning, as I have seen many people get screwed with paid traffic, but if you still feel compelled to do so, I would encourage you to get a mentor that uses paid traffic, so they will be able to show you how to do it effectively.

    - But until then I would say stick to free traffic sources like forums, social media, blogging, guest blogging, articles, classified ads, videos, etc... If you do it correctly trust me you will have floods of traffic to your website.

    2. Yes - people will spend money assuming you keep providing good valuable content to your list. As it was said earlier people want to be treated like people, and the more information you can provide them that they perceive valuable, then the more they will see you as an authority and buy something from you.

I would also suggest creating a Newsletter that you can send to them weekly.

Let's say for example your niche would be Social Media

If your newsletter teaches the reader something different they can use to build their business with social media, then you will have more credibility in your niche, and once again be seen as an authority.

Furthermore, if you are like me, than you hate coming up with more emails you have to put in a follow up series.
But, if you have a 20 week newsletter with tips that solve a problem, than you don't have to come up with emails all the time, and can just concentrate on sending affiliate offers from time to time.

Not trying to sell you on a Newsletter or anything, Im just throwing out ideas.

    To Your Success,
    Martin

Would building a list on the "Health Niche" be a wise thing to do? There is an over abundance of info on health on the web so you would never run out of content..

    everyone wants to be healthy...

    Any thoughts on this?

There's a lot of very big players in the health niche but then a lot of sub niches to find a foothold in!
If you have more knowledge in the health area than you do in IM you should go that way. Both are very competitive but both are "money" niches too.
As people have already said, whichever you choose you should aim to narrow your focus on a specific topic, develop expertise and a following before adding another topic and so on.
if you go the route of having a blog as your primary page and intend to be serious about building a list (which you should) I would make the opt-in box and offer a featured section at the top of the first page as well as having the opt-in box in the sidebar to be shown on every page - this will help converting visitors to subscribers. Or use an in page pop up though results can vary with the niche.

      best of luck
      Rob

    Yes, create a blog.

To start building your list, have your free product created and
create a landing page (sign-up) for it.

Then to drive traffic, list a FREE WSO pointing to your landing page.

You can add a one time offer. If your free product is amazing, then
you can offer PLR rights for maybe $10 or more? To recover the cost
of listing and bumping your WSO thread.

    How well could this go?

Have Only a squeezepage for building a list in the IM niche and have a free guide with ten great tips that are really useful for beginners and have a link in sig in forums etc

    And keep adding value tips

Is this possible? Would it work? Or would it be a waste of time

Yes, it's possible. Would it work or be a waste of time - you won't know until you try.

If your guide and tips are quality and you give your subscribers continuing good stuff they'll find useful then great.

Tweak your model as you go conentrating on what works and refine.

      Good luck with it.

You have a pretty good plan here.

Just one thing I learned after several years in list building. If you promote stuff to your list, you will make money. However, if you change your mindset and view your subscribers as business friends, you will make way more money because whenever you send an email, you'll think: "Ok, will this help my subscriber to make more money?". This mindset is much better than when you say: "I'll send this to my list and wait to see how much I make from this email."

Believe me, your subscribers will feel what kind of marketer you are after a while with you. If they feel that you are here to help them, they will stay with you (while they unsubscribe from others) and wait for your email in their inbox.

When you do email marketing, imagine that you are teaching one of your best friends (whatever your niche/sub-niche is). Imagine that you send this email, and a couple of minutes later, he calls you and say: "Hey V, did you forget I'm your friend to send this to me?"
