I put an ad up looking for decent sale page writers and copy writers.

I specified I wanted quality as well, many times.

    That one's terrible.

There are plenty more, though, of similarly dreadful standards, and some even worse: there's no "quality control" at all. :p

The understandable problem, for many people (and especially for marketers whose first language isn't English), is that they're more or less unable - through no fault of their own - to distinguish between "acceptable quality" and "complete garbage".

But this is really just one aspect of the broader issues involved in "outsourcing": a job you can't do yourself may also be a job whose quality of execution it's going to be difficult for you to assess. It's usually much easier to outsource things you can do yourself than things you can't.

Well, if you possibly can, avoid the mistake I made: I decided, when I started, that I just "had to outsource them all". And exactly as it has been for so many other people, it was a really bad decision.

Learning how to do them and then deciding whether/how to outsource them in future is a far better policy.

I recognise, of course, that with some specific skills with terribly long learning/education-curves (copywriting would be an example), that's completely unrealistic and inappropriate. But with many activities which people widely outsource, it's both possible and worthwhile.

Outsourcing successfully is a skill set all of its own. The more you understand about the details of what you're outsourcing - not just the outcome - the more likely you are to get a good result. Some of it's about matters as simple as "knowing which questions to ask" potential outsourcees.

A number of weeks ago there was a thread discussing the price to pay for a good article. Several people responded that they have "excellent" articles written for them for $2, $3 up to $5 for 500 words. At the time, I asked them directly by what standards were they judging these articles and received a couple of "I know what I'm talking about" replies. Yet, when I clicked through to a couple of links in their signatures, the copy on their websites wasn't much better than the example given above.

These are the people who will return here complaining because their sites don't convert, article marketing doesn't work, and more pointedly - their attempts at article syndication don't work.

I've seen this too. I've bought some cheap articles on Fiverr and they were all horrible: terrible grammar, awkward wording, spelling errors, no substance, sentences that made no sense. And other buyers found these articles to be perfectly fine. Writers on Fiverr who sent me completely disgraceful articles had awesome feedback. It makes me wonder if the buyer's own reading and writing skills are so poor that they fail to see how bad these low-quality articles are?

          Me too!

However, I also wonder if people are happy with content like this, simply because they didn't expect anything better for $2 or $5. I mean, if I pay $5 for a Big Mac, it did what it was supposed to do - eliminated my hunger. As an added benefit, the Big Mac tastes good to me, and I would tell people I like it and recommend it to them when they're hungry. However, if I walked into an upscale restaurant and spent $30 on an entree, I certainly wouldn't want a Big Mac to show up at my table - and I definitely wouldn't go around telling people how much I love the restaurant if it did!

            Excellent point, Nicole.

But it seems like the OP went to buy a Big Mac and was instead presented with a chocolate-streaked Milky Way wrapper.

              LOL! Very true, Lee!

Quite honestly, I don't understand why people are willing to settle for Big Mac content anyways. Why offer your visitors a Big Mac when you can offer them filet mignon instead? Sure, it's going to cost you more to get the filet mignon, but if it impresses readers, clearly lays out legitimate answers and solutions, and presents a strong call-to-action, you're going to wind up making alot more money in the end.

You're always likely to get a preponderance of those applicants, simply because some of the ones whose English is impeccable are fully booked, leaving the ones with "questionable" English to apply for anything/everything offered here.

I've known people who successfully use very low-priced article writers and send their output in batches to an "editor" who then knocks them into shape (at a much higher hourly rate, but the editor can edit four or five short articles in a hour). I think this can sometimes work out acceptably for people who don't want/need/expect the articles to be widely syndicated ...

Annie, you usually do get what you pay for, though I have someone who writes for me who charges .005 a word. Yes, you read that right, .005.

I picked her up through Freelancer. She's (US) college educated and now lives in Pakistan. She writes much better than me, though I sometimes do have to fix her grammar and punctuation. I'm good at grammar, but I'm not good at writing and expressing myself. She's so happy about writing for me and getting paid, that when she was in NY this summer she came to visit me and bought me a gift.

If you know how to look for and find good, cheap writers from abroad, you can find them - they're out there. They're just not so easy to find.

It's funny, because I get so many bids and applications with spelling mistakes and awkward word usage, that it's glaringly obvious the writer doesn't know how to write English well (or English is not their first language), yet they insist on being hired and they can't understand what the problem is.

I agree with Alexa. Outsourcing is a job in itself. The better you are at something, the better you'll be at having someone else do it.

I have a background in web design, programming and writing. This really helps me in outsourcing to people in those areas. I can tell when they're talking out of their behind, thinking I don't know any better. Sometimes though it's obvious to almost anyone when someone is REALLY bad, e.g. not even being close to writing in proper English when applying for a writing job!

Lots of people "classify" themselves as professional article writers (just check out some of the threads and signatures here!). However, you're only a true professional if other people "classify" you as a professional article writer - meaning they'd actually be willing to pay you money for your talent. Unfortunately, this person apparently thinks he's great

Sadly, this type of thing isn't limited to the IM world. A few years ago, back when I was still in broadcasting, we had a girl apply to be a news reporter. Like all other news reporter applicants, the first thing she had to do in her job interview was pass a current events test. This girl (who, bear in mind, wanted to be a news reporter) didn't know who the vice-president of the U.S. was. Her answer was, "Oh, that Bush guy."

    Couple things here to note:

    - The writer did say, "...who wants ..." instead of "...that wants..." so A+ there for that point

    - To a non-native English speaker / writer, this may look fine, and probably earns business.

    - This helps bump up the price quality writers can charge

+1. This is exactly the reason I say that writers should buy one of those $5 articles, just to see the "excellent" quality many people rave about.

Yea those just come with the territory when placing an ad online. Thankfully for us, you can generally spot who is worth while and who isn't within the first couple of sentences.

As Alexa noted, most probably don't even realize that what they are writing isn't proper.

In the end you get what you pay for, save for maybe the occasional diamond in the rough.

The UK has millions of immigrants from all over the world so this is not surprising.

There are some schools in the UK that are over 90% immigrant children.

Saying 'you are from the UK' these days is no guarantee of getting anybody capable of writing something decent.
