Default This 'Free' Website Pulls in $10 Million a Year

this is crazy...i read this article about this website (plentyoffish.com) that pulls in around 10 million a year from advertising revenue

it's a dating site, but the only difference from all the other one's is that its free

it attracts so much traffic that it can command really high prices for banner ads

you can read the article at entrepreneur.com...it's a really crazy story

It has been around for a long time now. I saw the cover of the mag. you mention at Boarders the other day.

What is kinda neat is to see that in 2003 the owner was posting on the WebMasterWorld forum he was making $40 a day in adsense then a few years later he was doing $10,000 a day.

I'd be curious to see what his revenue is compared to another dating site that charges to sign up such as Match.com etc.

I'm sure he would love to charge for memberships, and he might even try once his existing client base is up and consistent.

But one of the reasons the site blew up so fast, was likely that it was free.

Every business needs a USP, a Unique Selling Proposition. Its what makes you stand out and get noticed.

If I were the owner, I'd offer a more useful, "premium" account that costs an amount competitive with match.com.

Money isn't real, George. It doesn't matter. It only seems like it does.

I think hes doing just fine. If he where to make different account levels people may not be attracted because they may think "ah all the good stuff is in the paid sections..i dont have the money right now...no point in me visting this site ect".

He's doing just fine, he banks almost all the money he makes. Only him and his girlfriend run the site and he only has a handful of servers. The application is very lightweight, so he's operating on such a high profit margin he doesn't really have to worry about anything
