Do you need to be hated to be successful?

It seems that many of the top successful IMers are deeply hated and very often flamed by many - mostly by those that feel that they were scammed.

Anyone has any insight on this?

Have you developed a thick skin for success when the hating comes along?

What's your response when people have you in their target because of your hard working success?

Happy people tend to be silent.

Unhappy people tend to make noise.

So the unhappy people are easily seen, while the happy people aren't.

As the customer base grows, you see a lot more unhappy people, but you don't really see many more happy ones.

In my experience, most successful people, whether Internet marketers or not, tend to be honorable and honest folks who are trying to do the best they can to make a living.

It is such a shame that the few who operate on a different moral compass to the majority tend to get most of the press, and in the process sully the reputations of everyone.

It is so easy to believe that they are all out to get you - but the truth is quite different.

If you are careful about who you do business with - by asking for opinions from others and doing your due diligence here on the WF, the chances of being scammed are minimal. In ten years or more online I can still count the number of real sh*tbags I have unfortunately had dealings with on one hand.

I am not sure why they are successful if there are a lot of people who feel they have been scammed.
Maybe they get their success by selling to newbies who don't do their research first.

You are never going to please all the people all the time but you can give it a good try.

Failures will always talk bad about successes. I can only imagine how many of those people who bad mouth the "gurus" are the same people who tried SEO for 2 days and chalked it up to not working.

    Don't agree at all.

If they were so hated then they'd not be successful. What I've started to notice on Amazon that some books have moderate reviews and many have reviews where people love it... or hate it (with few in the middle).

I think when you create a market where people love you or hate you (as opposed to everyone thinking you're just ok and sitting on the fence) it's indicative of being yourself and doing what works for you. Voicing your opinion and your methods... not trying to please everyone.

You will get some very vocal people if they are unhappy with a product after being soaked to the tune of $1997 for it.

It also really blows when that's the usual response to any failure of a product to work as described. They can hype it up and make all kinds of claims, but when those results to not happen, it is of course, the customer's fault.

I don't spend $2,000 on a product to let it gather dust and a lot of people implement the suggestions in the product to no avail. But hey ... it's very convenient to blame the customers.

What I blame the customers for is believing over-hyped unfounded claims to start with.

I can categorically confirm that 80% or more of people will pay $2000 or more for a product, play around with it for a week and then move on.

Most of those people will never ask questions, never use the support mechanism, never even contact the product owner.

its not only convenient to blame the customer, its correct to blame the customer

In your case if your saying that you would make sure you used it if you paid that much then you would be part of the 10 to 20% that got a result from it

Like with every venue, it seems that bad boys and girls are always followed 'way more than everyone else.

They provide entertainment value. And when providing entertainment, good or bad, more and more people will hear about them.

Life's too short to worry if folks envy you or not.

I do agree about being soaked for $1,997 or so....in my wildest dreams, I could never conceive of buying something that expensive unless I knew precisely how it would benefit me (for example, I spent close to 4K to have my flagship site overhauled 15 months ago, but you had better believe I did massive research before settling on it!).

    Perhaps I'm just cheap....

Personally, I don't envy Gurus, hate Gurus, or want to be like them or not like them. There are bad Gurus and good Gurus ... bad teachers and good teachers. Some of these "big boys" are purely little but scam artists ... and very successful at it. Others put out products that are pure gold.

Better to be cheap and not be so gullible that you fall for the hype. Do your homework before making a big purchase.

I believe there are a lot of scams out there, including IMers promising you the world if you purchase a product from them. But every trade, career, profession has honest hard working people, and scammers.

So depending on how you choose to see it, you can either go with those with those who want to be negative or those who believe in it and push for the best.

Besides, why not go ahead and continue the trend of being a great IMer?

I think I read somewhere that if 1 person likes your service they'll tell 10 people about it...however if that one person doesn't like your service they'll tell 100 people about it.

I think also in a lot of cases the user doesn't give the product a chance, doesn't follow through or just loses focus and buys the next new appealing shiny toy.

I have supported products that people purchased several months ago but only got to try out recently.

Great question Christiani! Here's my take on it...

If other people envy for what you've done, then you are on the right path, because in their eyes, you are successful.

The more successful you become, the more people are NOT going to like you. And that's fine, because you want to focus on those people who admire and what to learn from you.

It's usually a DANGER SIGN if everyone pretends to like you and agree with you. You need opponents, in order to learn more about yourself.

There's an old say, "Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer." That's because you friends are NOT going to tell you all the flaws, but your enemies are going to tell you a big deal of what your mistakes are.

Nobody and nothing is perfect, but you can make it better.

i believe much of the industry has gotten a bad name in the last 5-8 years due to the hype. i really saw things change when the "gurus" started really pushing the $497 - $1997 products. which really began in earnest i guess with the john reese traffic secrets course.

personally, i have bought just about all the major courses from most of the major gurus players and my take is this. The truth is, there is not much meaningful new material to come along in the last few years.

Probably 80%+ of the information in any internet marketing course by anyone that is put out now a days can be found for free in various reports or on the WF.

there really are very few secrets at all, and the gurus dont know much if any more than many of those that are struggling. they have however built up internet assets over many years that allow them to live a very comfortable life.

most of the gurus are making their money with their list...thats it. thats the secret. get a list, some how, some way. if you have that, you can make money in a variety of ways.

another truth about the majority of the people that others refer to as "gurus" is that most of those guys only operate in the IM niche.

they in fact dont practice what the preach in many of their courses. they dont do the keyword research, they dont worry to much about niches, they dont focus on backlinking, they dont write many if any articles....they just create products that people will buy if they hear recommendations from their other "guru" friends.

i still buy most of the course because i can afford to finacially, and i like to see what they are up to, but my advice to people is "buy information or assets(think graphics)...not dreams"

if a sales letter is pushing you some dream income or how your life will get so much better after you pay me xxxx dollars, just close the page and move on.

By successful IM'ers it seems you're referring to IM "Gurus" in the IM niche. Those guys get the most hate and scam complaints. There are many more marketers in their own niches who don't get hated on like that. Yeah there are customer complaints now and then, but the main hate is for the IM gurus it seems!

Two quotes I get by when referring to haters:

    'Haters gonna hate.'
When you're trying to better yourself or your business, some are going to hate simply because they either are too scared to take risks like you. They simply aren't as successful or don't understand. Some people are just trolls and hate to try and wind you up just to get a reaction for their entertainment.

    'I <3 Haters.'
I've always thought if you are being "hatered on" you must be doing something right and the haters are simply jealous. So hence, I <3 haters, as a sign of validation that I'm doing something right.

Check out a simple blog post I made back in 2010 - http://www.malcolmbryce.com/2010/i-heart-haters/
