Marketing Lesson Learned from Confessions of a Teen Idol
It was a great lesson for marketers who don't brand themselves. There was one guy who just could NOT fathom why, in order to become relevant in his industry, he would now have to share his personal life with his fans.
He's used to the 80s way of promoting himself. Now he's the only one with no MySpace page, no blog - says he'd feel bad turning down friendships on social networking sites. (LOL).
The others are trying to teach him that to become relevant means to put yourself out there. If it bothers you that your followers want to get to know you on a more personal level, then you're going to be held back unless you learn to give in a bit.
That doesn't mean you have to disclose every secret in your closet, but be reachable. Your sales WILL increase because if they know YOU but don't know your competitor in the same way, who do you think they'll trust to buy from?
Most of these guys get it - but the whole show is opening my eyes to a lot of branding issues and mindset problems when it comes to people being self promotional (or should I say, not self promotional ENOUGH).
